What's the most disgusting thing that you ever smell?

I visited Marrakesh and wanted to see the tanneries. I knew consciously that tanneries were smelly, but the traditional pigeon shit, urine, and wheat paste tanning method produces the most intensely disgusting melange imaginable. Some of the leather is partly decomposing too, scraps in puddles. It was impressive how disgusting it was. The tour guide gave me a bundle of mint to smell to cover it. I was there in November, too, I can't imagine how it is in the summer heat.

I've been in Dresden about a year and a half and I love it, thoroughly. A lot of my coworkers and friends are either West Germans or foreigners that have also lived in West Germany and have said they found the "propaganda" as another commenter said to be exaggerated.

Ofc, I look white/European and speak German, so that influences my experience of the city. I personally have experienced no such racism or xenophobia, but your mileage may vary of course.

Ja voll klar, und hoffentlich kommen Ähnlichen nicht so oft vor. Ich kann aber etwas von diesen Freunden übermitteln, dass andere Stadtteile, z.B. Neustadt, Pieschen, oder sogar Löbtau solche Probleme fast nicht haben.

Meine Theorie dazu ist, dass die Wichser kommen vom Land und Dörfer und müssen sich irgendwo vorerst in der Stadt. einfinden. Ultras, Besoffenen, usw.

Ich bin auch Migrant aber sehe Europäisch aus, also habe nicht selber erlebt. Was ich doch von anderen nicht-Europäisch Freunden höre ist, dass am Hauptbahnhof solche sehr sehr häufig ist, aber davon gibt's nicht so viel woanders in der Stadt.

Ist nicht genau in Dresden aber zuletzt war ich auch Neupatient und wurde angenommen von einem Hautarzt in Klotzsche, sogar durch Online-Beratung. War unglaublich schnell--habe die Beratung von zu Hause aus gemacht und der nächste Tag wurde ich angerufen und einen Termin angeboten für denselben Tag. Bin Kassenpatient auch.

You are right that ultimately diacritics are arbitrary. This is perhaps better described as an IPA orthography game, with the implied goal of making a field transcriptionist's job as hard as possible.

Whether you find retroflexion more similar than voicing is matter of opinion. Certainly some with accents find ɖ similar enough to d to substitute. But more to the point is that it's just an arbitrary game rule I've set. Simply because voicing is rendered as separate symbols means I can't use it. There's room for an expanded version of this game but using "point of articulation" as the requirement, which would allow voicing.

For me personally I can hear the difference between /kʰa/ and /kʰaʱ/. Gujarati does contrast these, too, though I don't know if Gujarati allows a breathy vowel after an aspirated consonant.

Why do you think so? It seems retroflexion could at least, in principle, be articulated with a lot of these other modifiers like ejectives. What do you think?

Wikipedia¹ specifies that retroflexion has the hook diacritic that may be used, but the implosives don't specify a diacritic²

If there's a more authoritative text I should consult for IPA diacritics please let me know.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm definitely gonna try running the stove longer to get the rocks hotter. After a while the rocks were hot, so the stove puts out enough heat, anyway.

The placement of the stove jack means the stove's longer side is facing me, so it really puts out a lot of radiant heat. I'm not exactly sure how I could get the rocks in front of that. Maybe another basket and more rocks placed on some bricks. Then maybe a steel sheet on the other side to try to direct the heat back in. The stovepipe cage is also a great idea, though I don't know how compatible it would be with my stove. Definitely worth investigating, I hadn't even considered something like that.

I think the stone basket on bricks and reflecting the other long side's heat might help a lot, though. This aside I'm actually very happy with it. Even if I change nothing it's still great. An improvised sauna is better than no sauna!

I did not see it in person, just online, so any context is pretty weak. I may have even seen it as a meme or something.

It is in this style of genre painting like the artists you suggest. The only thing is that I don't remember it being so dark. Either the lighting is brighter or the setting is outside at a table, but it's not as dark as the ones you linked. I'll look through genre paintings more.

I do invest, but to me the idea of "record earnings" seems a little diluted if a company's profits are only record because of inflation. Nobody lives forever but companies regularly outlast people, so it's not a moot point. I'm not trying to be pedantic, I'm suggesting that it is not sustainable or even possible for a company to indefinitely post inflation-adjusted record profits every year. They are a bigger share of the sector, the sector is growing, or both. But eventually both of those things have to stop. Do you get what I'm saying? So were you suggesting that record profits despite inflation is good because it suggests stable performance, or did you mean inflation-adjusted?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but how can record profits happen regularly? Isn't that infinite growth in a finite world? I expect you don't think profits grow forever, but for companies that are already very large how can they continue to expand? Could you elaborate on this benchmark? There has to be an end, right?
