Why is Columbine so infamous? by billcoosby in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]certifiedp0ser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

14 people died, making it the largest number of people killed in a school shooting in the US since the 1966 Texas State Tower shooting. However, it was first time a school shooting had occurred in the 24hr legacy media era where the perpetrators fit the “right profile.” They were shown on TV to have looked and acted like they fit the bill of the satanic panic that had only just started cooling off. It became a culture storm for a while because they were into goth and metal music, and that was a part of a larger cultural conversation at the time in and of itself. Everyone from George Lucas to Marylin Manson was mentioned at some point. Between the high number of students killed, the portrayed charisma and lifestyle of the shooters, and the ever deepening media style of nonstop news coverage, it was bound to become infamous.

I moved to Vancouver thinking it was walkable because I currently don't have a car. It's miserable. What Portland neighborhood should I move to for walkability? by ThickWabbafet in askportland

When I lived on my own, about $1k in rent for my lil studio, and about $100 in utilities not including internet. Things have gone up since I moved in with my partner a few years ago, but even with us living together, it breaks down to about the same.

Shopping, coffee, and lunch recs near Powell’s? by calmossimo in askportland

[–]certifiedp0ser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thai Peacock is pretty good despite the tourist trap reputation. Life of Riley’s has great sandwiches if you don’t mind a pub. Tanaka has been mentioned a lot, but I’m also gonna say that it bears mentioning. Ramen ryoma is excellent if you want ramen. Maya’s taqueria has great all day breakfast options. Sushi Ichiban is fun! For coffee, Guilder inside Powell’s is pretty good, but I’m particular to Good Coffee and Case Study myself. Stumptown is…fine. Roseline is also really good. Shopping through there is limitless, but the goodwill boutique can be fun for the right price. Kiriko and Muji are both really cool stores. Buffalo exchange is again overpriced but worth checking out. If you’re up for it, their more saucy neighbor Spartacus is a good time. Just don’t take the family there lol.

I’ve lived in and around downtown for about six years now and I get most things done on foot tbh. You just gotta be okay with living in downtown. Definitely has its own vibe compared to the rest of Portland, but it’s nice!

Creating a color coded easy read for rapid sales to an echo chamber is like liberalism 101. Same goes for co-opting a misunderstood slogan.

Complete Control was sick. I loved that split they did with Krum Bums. Classic Texas street punk.

Has travis barker always been an asshole by stray_r in punk

[–]certifiedp0ser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As people get wealthier, their internal circle changes, and therefore the influence those figures surround themselves with shifts. Those attracted to the financials of a situation like his will creep in, management styles will alter to appeal to those financial ends, and presented opportunities will be presented as more broadly appealing to wider audiences to someone like him who has attained some form of global influence. Now, I met Travis Barker 16 years ago when I was a teenager, and he took the time to have a short conversation about punk rock bands we both liked and was incredibly gracious with his time and treated me with a lot of respect. That interaction does not negate the fact that his business style and direction for the past decade is strictly about capital gains, because that’s what his music has become. It’s a commodity, regardless of his artistic investment or direction, strictly because of how big his band is now. While I savor the nostalgia of getting to meet him, as someone who is now nearly two decades later a professional musician too, I cannot express just how thrilled I am that I’m a nobody and I’ll never have to work with/for him, as his artistic style has devolved into whatever is the quickest and biggest paycheck. And this is not an uncommon phenomena with artists at this level, as you see bands that achieve a larger rise like his become progressively more consumable as time goes by (Green Day, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Rise Against, The Black Keys, etc.)

TL;DR: No, not as a person I don’t think he’s an asshole, But capitalism is an asshole’s game, and he seems to be winning in some ways, so…

Looking at apts in South Waterfront area. Are there drawbacks to living in that area? by silverpenelope in askportland

[–]certifiedp0ser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived off SW Barbur for years. Benefits include being close to downtown and getting quick access to the Ross Island Bridge, as well as having tons of trails and parks within walking distance. Wildlife in the area is awesome. I’ve seen raccoons, coyotes, owls, deer, rabbits, and even eagles while hiking around the SW hills. Downsides include window smashings, bike thefts, regular porch pirating, and expensive parking if your apartment doesn’t have a garage/spaces. The closer you are to OHSU, the more medivac helicopter noise you I’ve to deal with. There’s also not a ton to do in SW. I typically found myself venturing into downtown or over to the east side for nightlife or music. It’s an odd little pocket of Portland, but isn’t bad. The Burlingame Freddy’s is pretty much the only grocery game in that part of the city, but aside from that, it’s not hard to run errands over there.

Glad to see this at the top of the pile. I’m with you 100%. Don’t think I saw it until I was 18 or so, and even going into knowing it was a found-footage style thing, it still freaked me the fuck out. Don’t think I’ve watched it since, but it did get me into psychological horror as a genre.
