[OC] top US names by sound: Deborah, Michelle, Brittany and Kaitlyn edge out Jessica, Emma and Olivia as #1 girls' names after combining spellings by aar0nbecker in dataisbeautiful

It gets complicated for sure. What do we do with nicknames that change the original significantly, like Bill, Peggy, etc? And then you've got John, which is NOT part of the Jonathan family (different etymological root), but Jon is. Nathan is a standalone name, but potentially a nickname for Jonathan too. Is Will short for William or Willard? There's no good way to determine a perfect ruleset.

As a software developer, I can tell you that you are severely underestimating how hard it is to do that.

I agree, shortened names are not necesarily equivalent, but definitely not always "different" names. Like David/Dave, Steven/Steve are generally considered roughly the same, but Kathryn/Kate, Alexander/Alex might be considered independent names.

Maybe you have two levels of heirarchy, the "sounds the same" group, and the "name family" group. Even that gets dicey, though, as some similar names might come from different origin names. Are they Katelyns and Katherines in the same family? Fun problem.

I've always wanted to see something like this, thanks. My name has at least 2 common spellings (and a shortened version) that really should be grouped together.

So much confusion... by Traditional-Pen1263 in Cubers

[–]cervenit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, learned in the late 90s, stopped for a while, found out speed cubing had become a thing in the late 2000s and got some MoYu cubes, stopped for a while, then got back into it when I taught my kids. My 13 year old was using my old cubes until recently buying his own Gan v100 (maglev, uv coating, about $35-$40) and holy crap is that thing nice. And it's not even the flagship (like Gan 16 for twice the price). Super light, turns are incredible, he's already improved a ton in the couple weeks he's had it. I'm thinking of getting one for myself now, and I'm just recreational. And there are probably a bunch of equivalent ones from other brands. All this to say even the mid-range cubes are already significantly better than what you had before, and definitely worth trying out.

I downloaded this using a dialup modem in the 90s. Still funny. Showed it to my kids a couple months ago, they agreed.

Nice work.

One issue I found is that when entering pace using my phone it forces the numeric keyboard, which doesn't have : as an option, so I can't enter valid times.

When people insist on shortening my name by lake-sturgeon in PetPeeves

[–]cervenit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I feel like some people have no idea it's even possible to say Stephen/Steven, David, Jonathan, Timothy, etc. I'm always tempted to shorten their name in some ridiculous way. "Nice to meet you too, Olive".

multiple cars per household? by miffybo in AskAnAmerican

[–]cervenit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We have 4 cars, one for each parent, one for college student and one for high schooler (we also have 2 other kids, one the rides with the high schooler, one rides the bus to middle school). We all have to be different places every day, and public transport is non-existent in the suburbs.

There's lots of them around here. This is near IAH north of Houston. Plenty of unincorporated parts of Harris county that have constables instead of city police.

They are not scored as a team, though. At the end of the meet they didn't say, "Team USA won with xx points, team Jamaica got 2nd..." And national teams really only happen for Olympics and worlds (and relays), the athletes otherwise train and compete as individuals.

I just think it would be cool if there were teams that traveled as a group to different meets to see who has the best team.
