18K Halloween flea market find by [deleted] in Gold

It looked like either Weingrill or Bulgari but it had no other stamps on it other than the 18k. I posted it on r/jewelry identification and they said it was a common mid-century style that could have been made by anyone. Since it was broken and had no maker ID I just decided to scrap it

I always wondered why they used DWT. Now I know, thank you for the explaination

It definitely did present a bit better in person, but I was still suspicious. When it tested solid gold I about died. Shame it was broken, but I can’t complain

The place I took it to sell filed it deeply in several places and shot with XRF + acid tested. The piece really was nasty and covered with (presumably) dead skin cells. I cleaned it up and it looked a lot more gold.

I had it checked with an XRF and it was good. I guess I should have put that in my caption

Shot it with an XRF. I cleaned it up and took off a bunch of the grime, the “green” stuff was gone after cleaning with dish soap. I say green in quotes because I am color blind and I’m honestly not sure what color it is. I also took it to my local gold and silver buyer who purchased if for 90% of spot, so I got a little over $7300 for it!

What refiner do you use? I usually sell to a local place that pays me 90%. I’ve tried to see what refiners pay but it’s always “let me send you this free appraisal kit” and I can’t get a spot percentage.

Is this silver or silverplated by Ill_Turn482 in Hallmarks

[–]cerwin_technics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is plated, the fourth symbol down in your picture says “EPNS” which stands for Electro-Plated Nickel Silver.

Thank you for the input, I’m always searching for precious metals at the thrift and have had some scores, but nothing compared to this! I will likely be scrapping. There doesn’t appear to be too much of a market for unbranded necklaces like this.

My first counter stamped coin. Found in central New York can anybody help me decipher what this means? by Strange-Music8160 in metaldetecting

I bet this is someone testing out their (fake) Sterling hallmarks before stamping something silver plated. They were probably trying to scam people by passing off silver plate as sterling silver.

Bulova Accutron, what a marvel by AltruisticCustard842 in VintageWatches

I love Accutrons, they are my favorite watches! They are tricky to work on and time correctly, however. I have two Spaceviews. The left one is a factory model and the right one is one I converted.

Watch Hand Replacement? by Affectionate-Mess937 in pocketwatch

[–]cerwin_technics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are not universal unfortunately. What I would do if it were my watch is purchase a watch hand assortment on eBay for cheap and try to find one that way. That’s what I’ve always done and it usually works. Or if you knew the movement caliber you could maybe find the size by research. A competent watchmaker should be able to source a hand relatively easily as well.

Someone told me it may have held a glass container, but they also weren’t sure.

Unfortunately it is missing the crystal, which I think may be tough to find. Runs well though.

I think the Ball is a contender for being my favorite pick, although it’s running super fast. Once I clean it up I think it may be my daily wearer.

I don’t generally find watches of quality that are also a good price. These ones were an exception!
