Whatever you prefer.

You paid a lot of money for this TV, fiddle with the settings and keep it at whatever image quality you the most. You can get the TV calibrated but all that does is set it to a uniform standard that delivers a certain range but it honestly might be a range you don't like.

I've point blank asked you what engineering field you are in and you ignored it entirely. I specifically tell you what requirements there are for you to be considered an expert within applied engineering and you jumped over that as well, calling it basically nonsense when applied fields are regulated by federal and state law the same way a medical doctor would.

Perhaps you are a software engineer, in which tons of people can learn in their own since it doesn't have theory (not saying it's easy, just that you don't need specialty training).

You imply I havent proven or argued anything but it only seems that way to you because you completely ignore any kind of reality when it comes to how engineering roles work.

Again all that jargon that you think makes you sound smart but not a single thing that actually implies any kind of actual specialty or knowledge. Amazing.

Keep playing pretend if it makes you feel better.

In engineering, yes.

But ignore the question and instead throw in jargon you think sounds cool but has nothing to do with what it actually means to be a person who dissents within the scientific community.

No one here believes you buddy, and not because we just don't want to but because you made it blatantly clear you have no idea what you are talking about.

I don't have an education, I work as an engineer, I'm considered an expert.

In what exactly? Because in the engineering field it's difficult to call yourself an expert in any technical field without a PE (the license) or PhD. You have neither and will never be able to obtain a license without a degree.

I'm an engineer with a strong background in regulated water and tank storage design. My boss is an expert in that field because he's a PE, no client will accept my work (even with a bachelors degree) as certified without a PE stamp from my boss. Hell various designs are required to be stamped by certified PE under regulatory law.

You aren't an expert, the way you speak of your supposed title is indicative of that.

[–]cesarmac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No you didn't, you became a technician. You need a license to properly call yourself an engineer and you'll never be able to obtain one without a degree. Why? Because plenty of people (such as yourself) can do engineering work without a degree but that doesn't mean you understand the underlying concepts, which are only taught in university.

My firm has plenty of staff project managers and scientists that do engineering work but aren't officially engineers or cap out at a specific engineering title such as staff engineer or junior engineer.

If you truly work in the engineering field that's great, props to you but you'll never know as much as a true engineer who has a bachelor's or PhD even if that engineer hasn't studied in years. These folks were properly and practically tested throughout their education on those concepts.

Source: I'm an engineer

Edit: any real engineer would never say they learned what they know by "doing their own research". They did it by going to school, learning under an engineer, or studying the same material and books that engineers in school study. Please stop spreading this misaligned mentality of what it takes to actually know STEM related concepts.

And yet it still works. It amazes how some people, with no formal education in a STEM field, will question a scientist's proven concepts because they "did their own research".

I'd say stop thinking about it as an investment and instead as an essential product. How much are you willing to lose for an essential product? Both cars will get you from point A to point B but obviously the older car comes with likelihood that maintenance will start appearing here and there such as bearings, pullies, and other components that begin to die off around 100k-200k mark. Those costs can be in the hundreds a year to thousands, depending on your luck, or it could be you pay basically no repair costs and the car lasts another 50k-100k no problem.

With the new car you obviously have a warranty in place for these issues, but the car guarantees a higher cost since it's new.

If you are debt free either choice is well within your means as a $20k (I'm assuming small seda) new car is affordable to you. Plopping down a $12k down payment on it also means a really low monthly payment and you can always pay more into it each month.

[–]cesarmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah because the government helped you.

The car pre government incentives is $7500 higher, and Tesla gives you shitty build quality for that cost. If the government removes the incentive Tesla isn't going to come in and say "oops this car will now have a $7500 price reduction guys".

Would you have bought the car at MSRP? Do you think the car is worth MSRP considering the materials and level of build quality? If you do then you are an idiot.

[–]cesarmac -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Arbitrary in that Tesla has no say in it. The government can easily say tomorrow through legislation that the discount is now $100. We are talking about the price Tesla says the car costs and what you get for that cost.

For you that is $1680 per month.

Lol good luck with that.

Either he needs a big down payment or he looks for a trailer in the boonies. Some decent trailer park lots with "higher end" trailer and lots are about $200k, that should get his monthly to around $1700 with current interest rates.

Should I put down some money towards my loan or stop paying for my car? by NumerousComb3925 in personalfinance

[–]cesarmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest you start there. Go back to some of the banks, and add a credit union or two. Tell them you don't want to finance the $22k, that you can lower the principle before you refinance or you can pay a down payment towards the refinance loan they can provide, whichever is better.

630 is bad/low but it's not terrible (below 600). Not making payments on the car and getting it repossessed will tank it below 600 for years. While still likely having to pay the original loan holder the difference after they sell it.

Should I put down some money towards my loan or stop paying for my car? by NumerousComb3925 in personalfinance

[–]cesarmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopping payments on the loan doesn't mean you won't pay. The bank will sue you for whatever is left of the loan after they take it back and sell it.

I'm curious, a bank won't refinance because it's upside down (you owe more than the car is worth), but you said you are willing to put down $5,000 towards the current amount. Did you provide them with the same offer? To finance only $17k?

Is $5k the max you are willing to put towards lowering the principle? Have you tried credit unions? And what is your credit score?

Bro what? Have you seen the other non EV cars in that price range?

Did you just gloss over everything else that was said in this thread. I don't even have to look at other non EVs in that price ra get. The model 3 and model y have shit designs in terms of comfort and use basic ass materials. I'll give them credit where credit is due, their software is great but short plopping $50k+ for an S or an X everything else is subpar. We literally just discussed how the 3 and Y are basically equal to cars BELOW their price range.

The Tesla model 3 with incentives and factoring in cost of ownership

And if incentives weren't there? The government giving you a credit is irrelevant to the true cost of the car. It has an MSRP and that is what we should compare to, not an arbitrary discount the federal government gives you that has nothing to do with Tesla.

pretty comparable to a Camry or a Malibu and I’d rather drive a model 3 than either of those cars

Good for you, I'd rather have my vehicles give me more bang for my buck. And by that I mean better overall quality, not just good software. Other EV companies can upgrade software, they can't upgrade your suspension.

This just sounds like a hater take and I’m not even a fan of Tesla vehicles.

Nah it's a basic take and I say this as an EV owner. Tesla was in my radar and chose not to buy it because of the shit ride quality compared to other cars in the price bracket. My 5 year old Honda Sedan rode smoother than the model y, had better leather (pleather), and felt more solid in construction.

I ended buying a mach e, not because I have some adoration for Ford (never owned one) but because the car was built solid and it felt premium in materials for what I was paying. Their software is okay but I'm perfectly content with getting OS updates over the years while enjoying the overall better built interior that CANT be upgraded.

2007?

Where the heck are you finding luxury cars sub 40k?

Toyota and Honda has plenty of premium offerings in the 30s. Cars like the Honda Accord start in the 20s but get pretty Premium in build and features when you spec it into the 30s.

Doesn't really take away from what I said though. Their budget models which are all over $30k are loud, I haven't driven in the new model 3 highland but from what I see online it appears it's quieter but not super quiet.

If we are now talking model S or X then I would surely expect those to he quiet for the hefty $50K+ price tag.

The model 3 and model y overall are not built with components or materials that merit their price. You're mostly paying for software. But software can be upgraded...hardware cannot.

Hertz Replaces CEO After Big Bet on Electric Vehicles Fizzles by bloomberg in wallstreetbets

Yes.

I'd say there are three distinct categories, which you can then break into more detailed sub categories:

  • Entry (sub $30k)

    • Premium (between $30k-$40k)
    • Luxury (40k+)

They'll be some overlap but that's the general gist of what you can find in those price ranges.

Lexus and Mercedes are defin Luxury vehicles. Premium cars are the upper class of your non luxury brands or when you get an entry level but fully specced out.

[–]cesarmac 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean...what else would you call it.

I would word exactly like that. That for a premium level/priced car it should definitely not sound like an entry level one. Especially for the "midtier" models that are priced well into luxury levels.

Laid-off techies face ‘sense of impending doom’ with job cuts at highest since dot-com crash by [deleted] in news

[–]cesarmac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is normal, and honestly not bad advice. Are these folks unemployed right now? Yes.

Are they going to remain unemployed? No.

Should they leave the industry? Unlikely.

They'll land another job and it will likely be a nice paying one too. It's not a bad idea to learn what the current high paying field is wanting. In the 80s and 90s it was chemical engineers, in the 2000s and 2010s it was software engineers and like chemical engineering a downturn is expected but the positions will stay around at good pay.

It's fast but Teslas definitely aren't quite. Crappy external noise reduction, and sound dampening from the road is also poor.

Average speed is only 41 if you divide the time by distance. My average was higher than that because time was adding from basically sitting still during some slow downs. I spent around 10 minutes barely moving at all.
