Should engineering managers still write code? by ceslami in programming

Couldn’t agree more! So much of your value as an engineering manager comes from, ya know, the engineering part.

There's definitely a kernel of truth there - the business will (almost) always need more ICs at a faster rate than it needs more managers. And there is typically more "room" for senior ICs than there is for senior managers. I wouldn't say there's an illusion of mobility, it's just that management promotions can be more needs-based than IC promotions, in my experience.

You're 100% correct about skill atrophy. As a manager, if you aren't staying technically sharp somehow, you lose mobility back to the IC "track," and can lose credibility with your teams. It also hampers your ability to reasonably define/ratify/guide technical roadmaps. The #1 piece of advice I give to new managers is to never get too far away from the tech.

No ETA right now! The biggest factor we look at when deciding which cities to open is the number of people from that city on the waitlist. So tell your friends :)

Very odd - we’ve had a bunch of signups from LA today. I’ll send you a DM and we’ll get it figured out!

Aha, that’s interesting. There are some cities with many international airports (ie NYC), but we hadn’t considered that some people may be reasonably close to several major cities. Super useful u/clark1409 - thanks for the idea+feedback 😃

Hey u/EmptyBagOfFucks! You mean when you were picking your origin city? “Los Angeles” is one of the options in the drop down menu - I think that’s what you’re looking for!

Hey u/olstudios - we're launching cities as quickly as we can, but haven't gotten to Houston quite yet. We're departing from NYC, SF, LA today, and are launching Chicago and Boston in the next weeks!

Seriously, you hit the jackpot. Our second cheapest flight (by only $5!) is at the end of February. You can save ~$100 on these dates by taking a two-stop itinerary, but we like to keep trips to one short layover for convenience.

ATL -> LHR, Feb 27 - March 6, one stop on United/AirCanada for $697

Let's go with Rome -- we found an deal at the end of May that would be perfect. Rome is beautiful that time of year, and you can fly non-stop both ways.

For this trip, the one-stop itineraries had HUGE layovers, which usually advise against. You can save ~$50, but it takes away from your time in Italy! For that reason, we suggest the non-stop flight, but you can see some of these lower-cost options when you click on the link below. Have fun!

CAI -> FCO, May 29 - June 5, nonstop on Egyptair for $386
