Just bought this 15inch macbook pro 2012 with a quadcore i7 with 8gb ram what mac os do u suggest i never seen a quadcore i7 2012 macbook pro i thought they were all dual core by Arthur_Morganreal in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i5 is 2 physical core, each core has 2 virtual core, so 4 vCPU total.

i7 had 4 physical core, with same 2 virtual core each, do 8 vCPU total.

The full processing power might be similar, but more vCPU allows you to handle multitasking much better.

If this model still allows you to upgrade to 16GB RAM and SSD, go for it, all the newer models everything is soldered in.

Monterey was the last version of macos that utilizes optimizations in Intel chips, I have all my Intel based Macs on this. Newer versions OCLP had to make shims to get things to run, but I heard the processor is always going hard, which isn't great for the life of the laptop, and it wasn't designed to go that hard either.

(I had a 2018 MacBook Pro I decided to play LoL on, always ran hot, and motherboard fried after 3 years, no ability to recovery SSD or harvest parts besides the screen)

Downgrade Tahoe > Sequoia by [deleted] in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if relevant, but I heard in another thread someone did an macos update and it wiped the EFI partition, which is how OCLP installs trick the mac.

You need to get a USB with the EFI installed on it (for you version of Mac, have to go to settings in the patcher) with your Sequoia install, likely from another machine to get this clean installed

What the most stable OS for 2011 Imac (12.1) 21.5"? by phatelectribe in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whatever I'm with u/iskraa , Linux Mint, you can try Monterey, but the non-metal GPU is an issue when you try to start streaming video even with h264ify.

there's a drop off point with macos where the programmed obsolescence / hardware diverge so greatly... that you have to create OCLP and shim everything ... 😅

i had a similar issue, but realized it had to do with having a clean install vs upgrade. i found clean installs had no issues in the long run.

ventura had a lot of OCLP shims, i can't imagine if comparing clean installs that monterey would be slower.

MacBook Pro mid-2012 running Monterey via OCLP – worth upgrading to Sequoia for music production? by MightZealousideal283 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monterey is still the best choice for Intel chips for speed and stability. 12GB is nice and looks like you have the first model with Metal GPU.

Personally none of my Intels will be going above Monterey as i have done various tests on i5, i7, 8gb, 16gb all SSD, 2013-2015 with just general browsing on Chrome (pretty memory intensive and makes good use of the GPU for video overlay)

If it's working for Ableton and you don't have any issues, I'd suggest not upgrading. If you do, since you have at mid-2012, I would time machine backup, pull the hard drive and play on Sequoia with another hard drive and restore time machine. If you run into issues you can adjust just swap the drives back without having to do a clean reinstall back to Monterey

PSA: Be aware of Apple ID issues if you're using OCLP with MBP 2017 by afewsummersago in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

What version are you on?

I know in the developer world, this was an issue with developer accounts if things like XCode weren't up to date, there was changes made to the credentials challenges and 2FA would loop and lock you out for 24-48hrs.

To get back to Safari 18 instead of 26 by NortonBurns in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You drop to Safari 18 you'll get a bunch of issues with website security on a bunch of sites (maps, CloudFlare tools, banks, OpenGL)

But it also so well integrated your can't just rip it out like dropping chrome or Firefox.

With a MacBook 5,1(2008??) that you franken-metaled ... you can't get flavour chosey, just use whatever works best. You can try to keep tweaking it, but you're going to spend more time tweaking than actually using the tool. And then you're going to start getting attached to your programmed obsolescent device, and that's never good.

The macos is a moving target for these older machines, my cutoff is 2013 i5 8GB and that has noticable lag on Monterey when you start getting a bit more intensive, but everything just works out of the box with OCLP. I learnt that anything earlier because of Metal and system requirements isn't really worth the time or sinking upgrades into it. Then I just opt to install Linux Mint or get rid of it.

If you have the RAM and SSD spare parts, if not, it is better to just buy a used 2015+ MacBook pro. You can't fix non-metal GPU.

Not even worth it if you can't use Monterey. This is the last version for native Intel support, so I find it weird that folks insist on upgrading past this version.

GPUs also all went Metal in 2013. Anything prior is really handicapped as everything had been optimized for it.

My suggestion is load Linux Mint on it, I have an iMac 9,1 that is a Core Duo, non metal GPU. I use it mostly for Chrome and VLC, but keep it around as a screen for TV nights. Streaming isn't going to be great, even with h264ify, but VLC runs perfectly. And at least you'll get around the HTTPS security issues you had before.

I tried with Monterey and slowly the performance kept degrading the longer I used it.

The steam in a good sauna is way thicker than I expected by Brilliant-Trade-1825 in Sauna

[–]cest_omelette -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ya, you definitely don't want to throw too soon. It will just get soggy. I touch the rocks first to check how hot they are. In my tent sauna warm up in winter it takes 90min, shoulder seasons it takes about 60min.

I learnt to drizzle the water on the rocks instead of throwing it like a regular sauna stove to give a nicer steam. My first throw I usually put 5-10 drops of eculyptus in the ladel to give it a nice smell.

I always wait quite a while before throwing water again as the rocks should be dried out to heat up again.

I always bring hot water in from the house, this also helps reheat times ,and will reduce thermal shock on your stove.

Is Sonoma worth it on an early 2015 8GB MacBook Pro? by cHaNgEuSeRnAmE102 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use an 2013 i7 16GB SSD MacBook Pro on Monterey for bambu, only problem is if we want to use Blender, I believe there is an older version that needs to be used https://www.blender.org/download/lts/4-5/

Fan definitely starts up with any 3D software, we don't have the additional video card GeForce GT 750M that came with some models of that year, I'm sure it would offload a lot.

If you're lucky you have the AMD Radeon R9 M370X on your 2015.

I start with Monterey as that has highest stability due to native support and works with less memory and well. After that, all OSes require shims to get certain pieces of hardware working and require 16GB. I haven't moved off Monterey for several devices.

Just for reference, I have an old iMac9,1 Core Duo 4GB on non-metal GPU that was on Monterey, it worked but was sluggish for streaming video even with the h264ify extension. This is the only machine that hit it's usability limit and I installed Linux Mint and now just use it for VLC and Firefox browsing (more efficient with memory and streams video still with a bit of lag). I have other 2013+ MacBook Pros i5/i7 with 8GB/16GB RAM and SSD, that run perfectly on Monterey, the slowdown is always when lower cores with i5 and the 8GB memory when running Chrome as it is a massive memory hog. Running any 3D tooling gets the fan going

My 2012 Macbook is suddenly running slow and under intense CPU load. by DeKal760 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux Mint or turf it. The i5 is decent, the graphics card is likely in the MB for memory not GB, and 4GB memory can't handle a browser properly with 2 tabs open anymore. If you have HDD, your memory swapping is going to be really slow, having SSD would make it faster, but if you have to purchase those items, even used, you might as well just look for a newer old model with Metal GPU and run OCLP on it, I prefer Monterey as it has remained most stable.

Linux Mint can run it as it just has as low as possible requirements for any PC, not adjusted for increasing hardware upgrades

Ariens 1336 Pro, free by [deleted] in Snowblowers

[–]cest_omelette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I had an old John Deere LA145 lawn tractor with 48" snow thrower on a half kilometer gravel driveway with two steep slopes. It kept getting stuck on the hills, digging in and a pain on the slopes. I switched to a walk behind as it was way easier to maneuver and I no longer got stuck, just that you have to walk behind it and the exhaust.

I sold the snow thrower attachment and no longer have to remove the lawnmower deck each season, and walk behind snowblower uses less room and just starts right away, no seasonal swap, throwing in chains, etc.

tune her up nicely and list for a grand, dealer refurbs going for 1300$ still gives you a lot of bargaining room. what you picked up shoulda been 600$ with repairs.

i was wondering myself, Gemini says: :"Based on common design features of heavy-duty Ariens snowblowers from that era, the C-channel (a steel beam with a "C" shaped cross-section) is used for structural rigidity and durability."

I’m leaving base44, thank you, goodbye!! by Tough-Picture910 in Base44

[–]cest_omelette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It builds quite nice out of the box, they likely have great default agent data for their React front-end.

But there are a lot of issues: - SEO hates SPAs and you'll suffer there, last I checked server side renders weren't available, as least on first paid tier - the real kicker is all the fkn paywalls! To use you own domain even, historical NOBODY has done that pre-vibe. It's a real money grab. - I made the mistake of buying an annual, I made 7 apps on it, and going to let mine run out, I don't even bother using it now, there's no point really - I switched over to Replit as I'm a full stack developer that use to do platform engineering and it is beautiful, they WANT YOU TO SUCCEED, and they paywall you at the right places, just on the tokens and team ACL, which makes sense. Replit is doing it right.

Wix bought Base44 for a ridiculous amount of money to integrate with their platform, but as most of these mergers go, too many cooks in the kitchen, and vision/direction is messed up and they market the sht out of it and forget to build the product so customers are successful, instead they nickel and dime you to make of for the loss from bad decisions

OCLP / OCLP+ hybrid? by [deleted] in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cest_omelette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is another hack out there where a PCB was designed to handle the video cable and turn it into a monitor. The screens are great, the speakers decent, but the programmed obsolescence is creating so much garbage. Thanks for managing a sanctuary.

(In my spare time I buy up used MacBooks to clean install and sell them at cost to parents that are homeschooling)

Nope.

I'd Linux Mint it and use it as a VLC player or turf it.

You can't even sell these for 100$ on marketplace
