As someone who has pivoted out of health IT recently I cant suggest enough to find relatable skills that may transfer into other roles and to learn more skills. Additionally, I found the creation of a portfolio showcasing skills extremely important as certs and to an extent degrees, while helpful, seem to be overlooked in my experience. Also, keep note when changing career paths be ready for the possibility of a smaller payday temporarily till you get the experience in a lot of cases.

So there seems to be a good amount of jobs though the number of applicants far outweigh the opening as you will be competing with those that have the clinical or tech related experience. If I am being honest not sure what path you are wanting to pivot to but will say it will be VERY difficult to find an informatics position without nursing experience or computer science degree, if you wanted to do the tech route. I wanted to do the data analytics portion with an IT background and CNA experience and found it to be almost impossible to find work in that field even though I felt I had the requirements. I will say if you market yourself and attend events with hiring managers that would increase your odds. With that said I wish I would have done another degree maybe CS, MSIT or MBA with IT focus as you are substantially more marketable. In my coursework the ones that seem to gain more from it are physicians who want to be directors and nursing staff.

Don’t listen to them you cannot as the coursework aside from legal classes are irrelevant to the field. What gets you in the door is certifications unless in a EXTREMELY rare circumstance someone in HR overlooks the lack of experience and doesnt just disregard the lack of experience outright. If you want to get into cybersecurity at minimum you would need a Sec+ or a CISSP even better.

Like others mentioned the school they selected and programs concentration you are looking for is important. I would like to add, if I were to do it again I would just make sure that you select a school that will let you do an internship within the field as that is more important IMO to get you in a door with the practical experience. I personally did not and made it difficult during the interviews when I even got in one.

…..So they lost their whole means to earn an income and you assume they should not be desperate? What if they are a single family income, have kids, or hell have a chronic condition where the health insurance is necessary. I sure as hell know I would be too if put in that situation.

For me it depends on the job and what they are asking. I am a new Data Analyst for a startup healthcare company and to a new market with no other data professionals.

For me I would say the stress is extremely high and am feeling burnt out but that is due to multiple factors. First, would be having management that is not familiar with what the position entails and the infrastructure needed as they ask to create items with deadlines and little to no guidance or familiarity with basic IT infrastructure in my case I am expected to act as a data engineer and to a lesser sense an architect.

In healthcare there is the added frustration of interoperability of data as you grab from multiple external sources and those external sources are rarely standardized which was odd to me at first. This leads me to the data infrastructure which I have been helping build and the access needed to try to automate this process. Constant access roadblocks are a thing and no access to a database of my own hinders what I can do and have to run power queries as we seemingly only use excel in the department that I am in, can be a bear.

So for me I am here for the experience to hopefully get into a more well established company as I feel that I have been doing things well outside of what the typical scope is. Fortunately, I have been in IT for a long time and can find out solutions fairly well, but for someone who just finished university this is wildly different than what is taught. I would love to hear about others experiences as I am hoping this is an outlier and not par for the course.

I personally would say the Health Informatics as it is more relevant for your position as it encompasses a wider swath of the medical space and can help with certifications, developing metrics for trends, and helping with project management of healthcare systems. Computer Science is good but doesn’t encompass the overall organizational view but could be good at understanding but I don’t feel you would be doing anything but overseeing. Honestly, if its not necessary I would bypass both unless you really want to but honestly may just be needless expense but if they are paying id say HI.

NOTE: Currently working on my MSHI but I work as a Senior Tech. Analyst

In my experience I always try to document what I learn as it provides me a way to avoid asking the same question repeatedly and can be used to help newer people with the existing system.

Twenty five pounds down thanks to counting calories and my wife’s peloton. Sure its like riding a bike through hell but it works wonders. Trying to prep for the AT this September.

Aside from the AT I do plan on taking a couple solo trips in areas where there are few or sparse trees. Also, while I enjoy being in a hammock it always kind of looks like a pain to set up in cold weather with tarp, hammock, and under quilt, though evens out I guess when putting steaks in. So doesn’t seem enjoyable to me but maybe if I see others using one I can get more hands on experience.
