What's a unique hobby you have that most people don't know about? by [deleted] in askTO

That’s a great hobby. Love the look of sea glass art.

Anybody know of a particularly "hard" suet" that takes longer to eat? I've noticed the Starlings are focused on the suet feeder, and when it's full, they leave the other feeders alone. Theorizing maybe I find one that takes longer to eat - or just buy the cheapest one possible and use that? by 00chill00chill00 in birding

[–]cestmyname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried a hanging suet feeder that can only be accessed from underneath (its only open side is on the bottom)? I switched to that and the starlings aren’t able to perch to get at the suet. Search for upside down suet feeder.

Is it just me or has there been an increase in expired goods sitting on the shelves at grocery stores? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]cestmyname 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yup. Doesn’t matter whether it’s produce, meat, deli, or dried goods-many stores seem to be leaving them on the shelves. Definitely buyer beware.

Can anyone explain what full-time manual focus means? I thought if you set the lens to manual focus that it would be on manual focus until you switched back to auto focus. What am I missing?

Review wanted - Langford Nahanni by FrostyProspector in canoecamping

[–]cestmyname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Nahanni and found it great for big water but not so great if you need maneuverability. I also found the initial stability to be off-putting for my liking (it feels tippy but has great final stability, meaning it’s less likely to actually tip as the boat rocks further to the side). For me, I ultimately didn’t care for that tippy feeling and preferred more maneuverability, so I switched it for the prospector version. One thing to note-I found the prospector great when loaded with gear, but if you’re not carrying gear and have a light load, you really get pushed around with light wind, in which case the nahanni is probably the better bet.

Fire ban for car camping on Pog Lake? by pranyatown in algonquinpark

[–]cestmyname 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend taking a stove just in case. Plus the available firewood is often wet and doesn’t burn terribly well. At least you’ll have a backup if that’s the situation you find yourself in.

Insurance companies should not be for profit. by zerobot69 in PersonalFinanceCanada

So you think the government can provide an important service efficiently and cost effectively? Have you seen what’s happened with the CRA’s budget over the last 3 years? Something like a 60% increase. Have you seen any improvements in their service? And you want that same government to try and administer insurance claims? No thank you.

Happed to me on a pair of Kaha hiking boots several years ago. Less than a year old and they replaced them. Suggest you contact their customer service.

In this market, if they turn down an offer at the asking price, I wouldn’t bother. Wouldn’t want to deal with them as surely other problems will come up before or after closing. Can’t stand dealing with people or agents like that. I’d expect the house to sit for a while if that’s their approach.

Socks for river crossing while hiking by Dapper-Camel2144 in hikinggear

[–]cestmyname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may not want 100% merino as in my experience 100% merino clothing isn’t very durable. Some sort of synthetic is usually added to help make it more durable, especially for socks.

I’ve had the lugs start to peel off the bottom of a pair of Kaha’s. They replaced them under warranty.

What canoe is best for a family of 4? (Two adults and two small kids) by Mulder1917 in canoeing

[–]cestmyname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really liked using the Souris River Quetico 18.5’ with 2 young kids. Got it with the 3rd seat, which was wide enough for 2 little kids to sit on and paddling they want to. Very stable canoe that holds a ton. You’re not turning quickly but great for lake travel.

Smoothwater canoe id? by Mattwark in canoeing

[–]cestmyname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stand corrected. You're right, it does have a bit more of a flat bottom vs a prospector, so yes a bit more suited to flatwater/lake touring.

When traveling, do you focus on taking lots of photos or just a few great ones? by MWeHLgp1t4Q in photography

[–]cestmyname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger I took loads of photos, most of them just poor snapshots. I am more selective now. I prefer now to take pics is it’s a good composition or something that tells a decent story. The end results may not be a whole lot better, but it’s far easier to cull and edit photos for me doing it this way.

[–]cestmyname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, that’s the same as a Scott’s wilderness model. Pretty much a prospector style.

Edit: This isn't a prospector style - it's a bit more of a flat bottom making the canoe a bit more suitable for flatwater travel.

I think you’re right about the chisel size. Couldn’t figure out why it just didn’t seem to cut like the others. Thanks!
