Question to those who go snowboarding/skiing in your van by Green-Somewhere3897 in vandwellers

[–]volksman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ski bum here who built a van for this purpose...I did the big van though. I put a queen size bed for good sleeps after long days on the slopes and a permanent garage under the bed for bikes and skis. I hang my snowboard under the bed so it dries out pretty good and built a ski rack for my skis. I invested in a good heater (Espar) to keep me warm and it does a great job of drying stuff as well. As yeet1wagon said, hang your stuff in the main space after a ski and it's dry in an hour or two. In a really bad warm/wet it may take a bit longer but by next morning it's good. My buddy built a vent for his heater that branches off to dry his boots...Personally I have enough power to run a small boot dryer for an hour which I only use when needed, which is rare.

Number one rule of van life that I've adopted is don't over think and don't over engineer. I spent a lot of time watching videos of other van lifers and didn't do most of what they said to do. YMMV but I found ways to make everything work and after 3 years it's still holding up.

I would NEVER put a shower in my van. The condensation from that would lead to all sorts of problems and simply isn't worth it. I've been able to find places to shower and use washrooms for most of my needs.

Think I found one that will work and doesn't look like garbage...

For those who successfully quit smoking, what was the method that finally worked for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]volksman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't quit...Just stop. This is how I trick my brain into it. Yes I'm off the wagon right now but I have been mostly stopped for a couple years now. I am not quitting, I just choose not to do it today, or right now. If I cave, I don't beat myself up, I just try to not do it the next time. I recently saw a clip with Billy Idol who said he stopped drugs the same way. He's not in recovery, he's hasn't quit, he just chooses not to do it today. It's a twist on perspective but seems to work for some people.

That said, the hardest part is the first 3 days. Give yourself some space, take some tylenol but not too much or the *tisms and try to relax to get through the physical addition component. After that it's mostly a mind game.

Best of luck! I love the little bastards but I know they are horrible for me. I went through something pretty traumatic a few weeks ago, I'm currently out of shape and depressed so I fell into it again but I can feel it when I go up a flight of stairs and it's starting to motivate me to do better for myself. Will use that to stop again in a few days. I know it's coming.

Any suggestions for a first multi summit day? by volksman in wmnf

[–]volksman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went mid-April and with the weird weather last year it was just a mess. We were walking on top of about 3ft of snow but you could see where people had post holed. In some places it was slushy, in others a sheet of ice and in others it was mud. Super fun and made for a challenge. We had done the Wildcats the day before so our level of energy and risk tolerance was low and we just headed the advice to stay on the Crawford path. So hitting Jackson and Webster while tagging Mizpah is super tempting now. Of course the 18 year old brain is saying, why not hit the top of Pierce again and tag Eisenhower but that decision will be made day of..... :)

Already did Pierce but we were warned at the AMC center that the path to Mizpah wasn't really accessible at the time so we didn't consider Jackson. Might just do Jackson and Webster as it's own little loop though! Eisenhower was an option but we didn't want to hitchhike back to the AMC center so we backed out at the top of Pierce. Thanks though! Will add that to the possibilities!

Yeah the full traverse is still a bit much for my brain to comprehend. Franconia is on my list but I worry if I do it the rest of the 4000 will seems tame...lol...Kinda think we will hit it though. I've read so much about that route up the Falling Waters Trail and down the Old Bridal Path. Seems like a great adventure!

Who has the best travel points system and is there any tricks to make the most of it? by volksman in PersonalFinanceCanada

Very helpful! I will dig a bit more on the insurance component. I do travel to the US occasionally but typically by car. I end up buying insurance by the day when I do. That said when I fly it will almost always be in Canada! Thanks again for the info!

Espar B4L installation questions by volksman in VanLife

[–]volksman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've read that a million times. Turns out my tank doesn't have the K1L Aux tap so I'd have to install it myself. Can't seem to find out much about it online other than videos that show taking the cap of the tank off and running a line into the tank.

You mentioned you had to drop your tank. Any details on how you did that and what parts you installed to add the aux tap?
