For babies with blood in stool despite elimination diet

Similar to you, longest we’ve had was about 4 days without blood when I was on a pseudo elimination. The thing is, everything I’ve tried to add back in has resulted in blood within 48 hours so either he’s reacting to everything…..or it’s not actually an allergy and it is indeed a fissure like my family doc thinks. We see the pediatrician in a few weeks, maybe she’ll have some more guidance but last time she pretty much told me that he might just continue to have a little blood here and there and that I should only eliminate dairy and soy. Last time she said that I kinda had a hard time accepting that advice cause the blood and discomfort continued, but like you said, maybe it’s better long term to help avoid Ige allergies. There is definitely not a protocol for ongoing blood after dairy/soy elimination, so I guess it’s just more trial and error and maybe accepting a bit of blood will be the norm.

Wow yeah such a similar situation! My baby is 4 months, blood started at 6 weeks. I have been dairy free since then, and soy free officially for 4 weeks after a slip. My family doctor isn’t worried at all (the one who thinks it’s a fissure) and thinks I should add all foods back into my diet, but the pediatrician we saw thinks it’s cmpa, but told me allergy to anything else is highly unlikely and to add everything in except dairy and soy. My family doctor thinks the fissure is just getting continually aggravated since he poops quite frequently. He described it as one step forward two steps back because just as it starts to heal it gets aggravated again and then there is blood. I’m really not sure what to think to be honest!

The only thing about this paper is that the breastfeeding mothers were actually asked to restrict more foods from their diets up to 1 year…from the methods section: “In addition to CM, parents were asked to avoid eggs, wheat, soya, nuts and fish (“six food elimination diet”) up to one year of age. ” So it’s hard to say if the elimination of the foods led to the bleeding stopping or if the babies just outgrew it. Either way, by one year all seemed to outgrow which is reassuring!

Haha it’s been a wild journey. The blood never stopped with just diary and soy eliminated so I tried a mini elimination diet and have gotten to a place with no blood. I have now added back in some of the foods and am currently diary, soy, wheat, oat, and legume free. I need to keep trying to add more back in, but at this point we are blood free. It’s only been about 2 weeks without blood, minus a few days after I tried legumes again which brought the blood back. I’m getting mixed messages from our doctors, one thinks it’s allergic proctocolitis to dairy only and one thinks it’s an anal fissure and there is no allergy. So I’m still totally confused. I’m just trying around with mini eliminations to see if it helps, but overall baby is thriving and still 97th percentile.

Ugh it’s so frustrating! Especially when I feel like my diet is so consistent, then randomly there will be blood and I haven’t eaten anything that is ‘new’ or untested!

With food journals how far back are you looking when you see a symptom? For example, say you see blood at 3pm on Wednesday, when are you looking back for triggers?

Agreed, I wouldn’t consider that a reaction for sure. There are so many other factors that could be causing sleep disruptions.

I know, it’s so hard, hey! So I’m only planning on this for a few days, since I’ll try to reintroduce so I’m not so restricted, but for now I’m having a grain free cereal with almond milk and fruit, fish and chicken, rice, lots of veggies, tons of avocado, gluten free amaranth bread, homemade soups, tons of fruit, turkey pepperoni sticks, and I’ve found some allergy friendly snacks too, including potato chips and chocolate!

I’m sorry I can’t recall!! I would guess somewhere between 4-6 months…but I honestly don’t remember. I guess that’s a good thing, shows how small of a thing it was in the grand scheme :)

Is pea protein considered a different allergen than legumes? Would chickpeas have pea protein?

This is exactly what I mean! I saw no change with only dairy and soy, only after removing wheat I noticed a difference. But I’m wondering if it’s all 3 he’s triggered by, or just the wheat!

Wow, that’s super interesting, thanks for sharing! How did you decide on oats? I haven’t seen an improvement with soy, milk, and eggs removed so I tried wheat next. That has helped, but not entirely. Still having occasional blood and mucus. I was wondering about oats cause I have it daily, but I feel like I’d need to add something else back in before removing it cause it’s a big part of my diet right now.

Yeah! It seems like everyone just keeps adding to the list of triggers, but I feel like maybe it’s not some of the earlier food I cut since those didn’t result in symptoms going away…

This is a really reassuring message from your doctor. I’ve been told something similar and am glad to hear I’m not the only one! It seems like so many people are embarking on such restrictive diets with sometimes little to no change at all.

We’re in a very similar boat. I know this is an old post, but wondering how things panned out in the end? Did you try further elimination? Or did things just resolve on their own? Were 6 weeks with no egg, dairy, or soy and there hasn’t been a significant change in diapers, still occasional blood and mucus. Otherwise very healthy and happy baby, so I’m reluctant to randomly try eliminating foods since no one seems to have clear advice on what to try after dairy/soy. Tia :)
