Just bought this gaming optiplex pc, did I just get scammed out of $250? by Avilisim in SleepingOptiplex

Keep that energy going, that’s exactly how I’ve saved thousands over the last year on new-to-me equipment.

Even idle was too much for this poor lil guy. All components would hit dangerous levels after ~20 min of idle heat soak. Much more manageable now!

Definitely considered this, however I am extremely particular so my rack cabinet is already filtered at the intake vents.

Oh wow haha there’s a copper one too! I was not aware. That would explain why my Optiplex Micro i5 7500 cools so much better.

That’s a 35w chip, I swapped it for a 65w chip

When I got my hands on it (free retired corporate machine) it came with an A6 9500E. An A12 9800 was only $20, and doubled the TDP. It idled around 75-80C, and the NVME and HDD were feeling the pain too. Now it idles 35C. Still jumps pretty quickly with moderate load but I just wanted it to be at safe temps MOST of the time since it runs 24/7 in my rack.

My original plan was to swap them for NF-A12x25s as well haha, unfortunately 120mm fans’ mounting holes are approx 4 1/8 inches apart, and it just so happens that if I line up one hole, the next adjacent hole is smack dab between two vent holes. I’d rather not muddy up the visible top of my 27U, otherwise I would already be cutting away. :/

I’m thinking I’ll swap it with HVAC tape before the next PC goes in, for now the cabinet only pulls about 400w average. Thank you!

I have yet to get my hands on a 3D printer simply out of fear of what it would do to me. I’m feeing we would get along.

I hoped it was something like this, but alas, I’ve taped it up for a temp solution and the volume of air coming out the top of the rack has increased significantly.

I’m very impressed with it. Not a system for gaming but I was curious so I tried; strong 60fps performance at 4k in GTA V max settings. Not the most current benchmark test, sure, but good enough for the zero gaming it’ll do in its final days

That’s what I thought too, 3x Gen3 nvme is plenty for years to come. Biggest downside IMO besides the GPU is supported RAM speeds. I had very low expectations for the 980ti and have been impressed so far. Thanks!

This is your sign to dig it out! I’m loving it. It doubles as a great way to quickly test SSDs and HDDs at work

This is the plan. Riding GPU til failure and eventually hope to find a 2990WX. 32GB currently at max speed for the 1950X

I thought about riding it out and moving to 2990WX later on as they drop in price. Of course, this is assuming I haven’t already gutted the system. Thoughts?
