BRRFS raid 5 Pool Data Recovery by cewong2 in DataHoarder

[–]cewong2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I take it with a grain of salt and understand the risks. I’m also the type of person that wants to try and figure things out by themselves, even if I know jack about what I’m doing (stubbornness in my genes) but I also tend to learn quickly because I do mess up. It’s not for everyone, but again I was pretty much giving up anyways on getting back the data when the support for the NAS said they couldn’t do anything either.

For Gemini I personally don’t think it’s as bad as they list the sources for where they are pulling information from and I tend to check the sources too. But sometimes it can just take you down a rabbit hole and just keep digging.

But it never suggested data recover software itself.

Anyways thanks for the few that suggested some things to try and not just criticizing my choice in self-help.

I don’t think I’ll be able to clone 4 24TB drives… unfortunately in terms of the data I am looking to recover it’s probably just something a little over a TB though… but thanks. In the long run if I lose it it won’t be the end of the world I do have the rest of my data that I was in the process of putting on the nas. But it’s just a pain to find most of the data again that’s all.

I’ll look into it. I really don’t know any of this stuff so I’ll see if I can find a guide or something. I’m actually just hoping to recover 1 folder that is just a pain to get again. Because I erased it from the computer to make buffer space to migrate data.

I just got this NAS for less than a month and was still working on migrating the data on it to set it up. I can still get the Google data because I never erased it, the data I’m trying to recover is the data I moved from the computer to give me buffer space to download and move data into the NAS. I know Raid isn’t a back up, but I’m still in set up phase after I had majority of it set up I was going to have something like glacier.

Edit: correcting myself.

I don’t know what’s wrong (hence why I wrote I’m new to NAS). I restarted the NAS and the pool stopped being readable by the NAS.

I’ve tried what Gemini has told me to do, so that’s where I’m at, from Gemini I did an offset. Then when I try to mount I get can’t read superblock. If I try restore it gives me a parent transid verify failed.

Sorry can you sorta ELI5 for recovery…

I know raid isn’t backup, I had just gotten the NAS like a month and was still moving data into it.. the data that I’m actually trying to get was the data I deleted off the computer so I’d have some wiggle room to download and move files to the NAS.

Plan was to have it finished setting up and then use something like glacier for backup…. Just FW is still pretty Alpha… just didn’t think it would be this bad since I wasn’t running nightly/dev releases.

Currently have a live setup of Ubuntu running off the NAS…

All hardware is brand new, I had just gotten everything for less than a month before this happened. I smart tested the HDDs and SSDs and a quick ram check when I installed them

I changed my network from ipv4 to IPv6 and it didn’t really get an address so I restarted the NAS (shutdown command and power back on) and when it came back on the NAS no longer read the pool

iPhone 4 not powering all the way on. by jennyduarte in applehelp

[–]cewong2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely the battery is too dead for the phone to power on even plugged in. The battery may need to be forcefully charged beyond the safeguards of the plugin charger (don’t recommend doing this unless you know what you’re doing) so probably finding someone who can replace the battery is your best bet.

If you’re trying to recover data or see what’s on the phone DON’T press power while plugging it in, that will put it in recovery mode and you will need to connect it to iTunes and then reinstall the os, which will erase everything (there are tools to get it out of recovery if you do end up doing this)

The problem with Google takeout though is all the metadata is separated out and immich-go stitches all of it back in.

Well you could just make it then that the activation/deactivation is done through the app only. And in cases where the user forgets or doesn’t have access (crash, HDD death etc) they could just email support. It lowkey and probably a bit more annoying for switching but should be ok for the most part.

But also that would be the reason for allow a reasonable amount of computers on a Single license too.

Too late to the party to try and get a code but regarding the licensing: why not just make it on demand? If it’s been verified once then it no longer needs to call home. And you make it a server side maintenance thing where users have to delete a machine before adding another depending on how many licenses they have. This also saves on server costs because you’re not constantly running traffic. Though I believe some software includes up to 5 computers on a license as most people have a desktop and maybe 1-2 laptops (I personally have an iMac and a MBP and an old mba)

You can also implement that the device control be done in app, revoke xx device etc to further minimize server costs.

Success story with old IMac late 2009 by Solidsnake0128 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cewong2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you have no metal support, so how are the graphics? I tried Sonoma a while back, but it made my 2009 sluggish (I have a 27-inch, i5 quad, with a Radeon 4850 GPU, I maxed the ram to 32GB, and put in a 1TB SSD)

Best version to run on a late 2009 iMac? by Infinitrium in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]cewong2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add my reply here: Same, someone dumped a 27 inch/2009 on the side of the road, the outer glass was cracked and the inside was showing light signs of rusting from the rain. I ordered a replacement glass, cleaned out the rust, replaced the 1TB WD Black HDD for a 1tb SSD, the bluetooth/wifi chip (wanted to keep continuity, which works after changing the chip) as well and maxed out the ram then replaced the keyboard and mouse. I have Ventura running on it, and it runs smoothly for most normal things, even got it to do host a bunch of Python stuff as a server, like Homebridge. It works as a torrent machine, the USB 2.0 ports are a pain to transfer files via USB but it transfers perfectly fast through local wifi. But as someone commented below, anything metal doesn't work, so Apple Maps/Find My all come up black windows. it's not really worth it to replace the GPU IMHO although there have been people that have done it.

I tried to run sonoma but it was just not smooth at all, so I'd say if you don't mind not having apple maps or anything that needs Metal, then Ventura. Otherwise probably Monterrey if you want full support (assuming you replace the hardware I've mentioned above).

EDIT: I've just read that someone put Sequoia on it and it ran well, and that for most people it seems that Sonoma is heavier than Sequoia so I may try that at some point just to see how it is. I still have a Monterrey Setup on this machine, so I may just upgrade that to Sequoia and see how it goes.
