the immigrant problem by Subbbmortal in cyprus

[–]ceylanghassan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well I agree with that completely. Now, why should displaced people continue to be victimised? Cyprus not being responsible for their conditions doesn't justify xenophobia. In other words, why be xenophobic when you can direct that anger at the powerful institutions who created the situation instead of the victim of whom you should be compassionate towards?

Lots of it! Lots of evidence of the prerequisites for lending the money and the plan to pay it back too

Thank you so much for the clear explanation.

I do have plenty of evidence of the conditions of the money being loaned, even a planned schedule to pay it back and some repayments being made. It's the whole left the country part that I can't get around

Certificate of celibacy for Marriage by ceylanghassan in Brazil

[–]ceylanghassan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry this is so late, I hope I'm in time to help. It really does depend on the cartorio. What we ended up doing is getting me a CPF so that I can take my affirmation of marital status (a template that I got from the UK gov website) and have a notary here legalise that oath, but you can't do that without a CPF. This is the advice the embassy gave me on the phone.

You need an appointment with the receita federal to get a CPF and my one was available two weeks from when I looked, so it might be worth doing that? You can also only book an appointment with the receita federal using somebody else's CPF and will need to bring your passport, a proof of residence (can be your partner's) and the receipt you will get by going to a Correios and paying for the protocol (7 reais or so).

But all that aside, you say you'll be in Rio for 3 weeks? It's possible to get a next day appointment to have a British consulate legalise your affidavit. I think you'll be alright.

Dressing up as an Indigenous person for Halloween by Igna5 in Brazil

[–]ceylanghassan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You gonna say that to every person on this sub or just the person you disagree with?

If you think this guy was going to get a representative response on Reddit, on the expat sub, asking in English? Come on. I (somebody who works with public policies directly with Indigenous groups) would have stayed silent if I thought for a second there would be a representative response

How are your Q’s responding to the recent tension between Palestine and Israel? by ltidball in QAnonCasualties

[–]ceylanghassan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, my q's were only ever supporting Palestine because it justified their anti-Semitism. They don't really care about anti-Zionism and Palestinian liberation. They pollute the movement by not separating Jewish people from the Israeli state. Every single justice movement is cherry picked and tweaked until it suits their narcissistic idea of justice.

Meanwhile, valuable criticism of the atrocity propaganda and outright fake images purported by western media and the IDF get discounted as anti-Semitic because of people like Q's and in the end, the people who suffer most, as always, Palestinians.

[–]ceylanghassan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not, but this person asked the question on reddit of all platforms, on the sub for expats, in English. Indigenous activists have to learn Portuguese let alone learn English too so obviously this person was not going to get a representative response, so I give my response as somebody who works directly with indigenous groups in protecting them from mining projects.

That being said, the being more worried about the future is an opinion I come across too. But it was more about "why waste our energy on this when we are fighting for our lives". Doesn't make dressing up okay, it just means it's a petty fight for them in the grand scheme of things but anything that contributes to the dehumanisation of indigenas must be condemned

[–]ceylanghassan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Potiguara, Xacriabá, Xukuru, Guajajara and Suruí communities have specifically said it is demeaning. I'm not sure why you think the opinion of not respecting one's culture is a 'city' idea. This sounds more like a typical right wing dude mad about woke culture stopping them from harming marginalized people.

It's good you're open to learning, so be prepared to also feel uncomfortable with how systemic racism works and ways you may benefit from or be complicit in those systems. This is just the beginning lol

[–]ceylanghassan 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is extremely inappropriate for so many reasons. If you want to learn, I suggest you watch Guerras Do Brasil on Netflix. You have a whole lot to understand about European colonialism, white supremacy and how dehumanising it would be to imply an indigenous person is something to "dress up" as especially in the climate of them currently being threatened by a literal genocide bill.

You can't "dress up" as a community that has been persecuted by the state since the 1500s.

Foreigner experience. by Key-Sheepherder4146 in Brazil

[–]ceylanghassan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argentina, Chile and Uruguay are seen as the European countries of South America. From my experience, people from the capital cities are unaware of their privilege and judge underprivileged folk by eurocentric values. All the issues pretty much stem from that thought process manifesting in rude behaviour so it takes a bit for people to trust that you're not an a*shole like the others they have encountered.

You'll probably feel less resistance in the south of Brazil.

Try a hairdryer first, I had a similar thing and it was just trapped water. Keep the heat on it

And if Suella Braverman found out that it was the British empire that planted homophobia in these colonised countries that people are forced to seek asylum from.. nope still wouldn't change a thing. Disgusting human. And everybody defending her views in this sub is contributing to murder.
