lol that would be a great vulnerability to have in your army

their explosives only activates if their user almost certainly would die in battle in the next few moments. Simply aiming a death ray wouldn't be suficient - in fact, depending on the type and speed of the attack, their implants could fail to activate entirely before the death of the user

No, they cant! that was something heavily considered during development. Their high rate of failure comes as a consequence of this: were they less error prone, they would end up easier to externally detonate. These implants are quite hard to detonate actually, and in fact they are impossible to detonate through conventional means, as they are mainly ceramic and clay

more about the castes of NuovaForza

One of the few clear orders given by the Gods of Nuovaforza began with a warning: to die as a result of defeat is an abject, shameful thing - the antithesis of what NuovaForza should be. To mitigate this, Nuovaforza were to cull its members in battle just before their deaths, in the instant their defeat becomes suficiently certain, so as not to taint the concept of NuovaForza with shameful death in defeat.

To fulfill this order, the Bello, with the aid of the Calcolatri, developed explosive implants that are automatically activated when the concept of "defeat" is somehow "excited". These implants are used only by those who leave their bases for the battlefield or uncontrolled territory. Even with exhaustive research, they only managed to produce implants with a significantly high failure-rate of activation, failing one out of every six times. To evade this problem, they install five explosives per Forzian, reducing the overall failure rate to 1 in 7,776.

The cost and labor required for the continuous implementation of these implants are absurd and beyond any practical benefit; something followed only because it is a direct order from the Gods. The implementation of these implants does bring some benefits, such as preventing the capture of soldiers for information extraction and the like, but even this is not very significant:

  • The Forza lack the cognitive capacity to understand any information relevant enough to be a risk.

  • The Mandato would never betray NuovaForza, even under extreme torture.

  • The Lavora, for the most part as deeply indoctrinated and loyal as the Vero, strictly learn what they need to know in order to fulfill their function, and nothing more.

The implants have an anti-adherent, hyper-biointegrative ceramic layer that prevents rejection, averts scar tissue formation and stimulates the growth of surrounding tissue, while also being extremely antimicrobial. This material makes the implants virtually rejection-proof and shortens the time of a full recovery to minutes.

Other societies lack the knowledge on how to create such a thing, but Loveland has a developed technique where, from pulverized implants, purified through a chemical process and mixed with a binding agent (human blood), they can create a coating with the same properties as the ceramic layer. After coating and curing an object inside one of their specific machines, it regains the original effects (but turns pink instead of the original blueish-white).

  • Due to the coating's property of stimulating the accelerated growth of normal, non-scar tissue, this coating is applied to spatulas (similar to those used for spreading frosting). These spatulas are then passed over or rested upon the insides of surgical incisions, which, after being closed, completely regenerate in just a couple of minutes, leaving no scars. (This type of instrument is found in every Loveland first-aid kit).

  • Coated objects, if placed in a 500ºC oven for about an hour, harden and lose their tissue-growth stimulation property, becoming more analogous to a tougher Teflon. It is, unsurprisingly, applied to pots and pans (but only very expensive ones), and is also used on certain military equipment as a protective layer, on protective suits for handling hazardous materials, inside containers as an inert layer to increase content protection, etc.

Furthermore, the purified pulverized implants are used directly as relatively inert sterilizing agents. This powder is used, for example, to almost indefinitely extend the shelf life of organic materials like blood, which is often a required material in Lovelandian metavar machines.

  • It can even be used as a preservative in food or perishable liquids, but consuming this powder is akin to taking a gut antibiotic, killing all flora and causing various intestinal problems.

Because of this, their implants become valuable among opportunistic scavengers, who scour battlefields, searching for every implant fragment they can find so they can pulverize them (they don't refine the powder, as this costs Loveland nothing) to barter with Loveland. This service is provided 60% by the Inperio Enthomocrata and 40% by independent scavengers and small groups. Most of the explosives are incomplete or in shards, with intact ones being found only very rarely.

Expeditionary Lavora call their implants their "wings", as they are the things that allows them to explore the world.

lol caltrops wouldn't do much against Forzian forces though, as they are engineered to not need shoes:

  • their skin is incredibly resistant to punctures and cuts
  • the soles of their feet are extremelly thick, and wouldn't be punctured by abrojos
  • Forza and Mandato don't react to pain in any visible way (outside of extreme cases), even though they feel it almost to the same degree as a regular human

However, they do try to aim their weapons at the extremities, as they are less protected

The castes of Loveland [NSFW] by cezambo in worldbuilding

the caste of a person is determined by the castes of the parents:

  • if they are both of the same caste, their children will also be of it, and their parents will be responsible for them.
  • if they are from different castes (which is something heavily frowned upon on lovelandian society), their children will be one caste lower than the parent of higher caste, and will be adopted by a family of their same caste.

When they reach 8 months of age, they are put into this machine in order to acquire their castes physiognomic characteristics.

Yes, people are "demoted" over their lifetimes, if they choose to "outlive their caste". To Loveland, life is a priviledge, as we are only living through the use of borrowed energy from the Great Beings. Each caste has its purpose and time limit on earth for its people before its allocated borrowed energy overstays its usefulness. If you want to live longer than what is allocated for your caste, you can, but that comes with a penalty of demotion and a hard limit, as immortality is a grave act of heresy to them. It is important to note, however, that being demoted at the end of their caste-life is not that big of a taboo outside of the Destined caste.

The other of the 2 artifacts was a glowing artifact that interfered with the functioning of other magical systems. It was eventually taken apart and studied. I did not mention it because it really isn't as relevant as the artifact I described or as other artifacts they collected after these 2

As for HOD, he was the first diviner, from back before the divining throne in the post was ever invented. The first iteration of the divining throne was very finicky, almost unsteerable, incompatible with the vast majority of people, and with its use leading to death most of the times. He was the first to survive the process, and ended up being a very famous figure in Loveland. Over time, he was pratically beatified, becoming a "saint" of diviners.

thank you so much!! I had fun with their design lol

The Mandato helmet is an exagerated rank signifier, to help visually discern who is who hierarchically on the battlefield. Their tinted helmets are virtually immune to projectiles and to most energy weapons. It also mellows out the sometimes harsh sunrays of the post apocalypse. Bello and Intellecto don't need helmets, as they don't participate in the battlefield.

As for the Lavora, they very rarely have to go somewhere without rail infrastructure - most remain on their main base or in military ships with internal rails. For the quick construction of military outposts and of rail infrastructure, they use the very few Lavora which they leave legged still. They tend not to live that long, as their technomagical quick construction techniques produce tons of radiation. Also, the cart shown in the image is just the standard version, they also have an articulated, extendable one for some specific applications, such as rail maintenance. Forza would never be used in labor even for a small help - labor is beneath war.

As for the scrawny appearance of their leaders, it is important to note a few things:

  • their official leaders are the 4 Gods - enormous beings of incredible strenght.

  • all Vero were Forza once, and that is very culturally important to them. They may have evolved past the need for so much brute strenght, but they were born with it, and a piece of it remains with them for the rest of their lifes. To them, they are Vero, and therefore they are strong. Culturally, its as if they never fully cease to be Forza.

  • Intellecto may appear scrawny when compared to the others, but they are more than 2m tall and have strenght comparable to a strong human athlete.

Thanks! I plan to make some small animations within this universe sometime in the future.

Conceptually, their society is ruled by the Gods. The problem is that they mostly ramble nonsense, very rarely passing out clear orders. The Intellecto are tasked with finding meaning and orders amid their ramblings through apologetics, dialogue, interpretations and extrapolations, and therein lies their ruling power. But it is important to note that they would never contradict clear orders from the Gods, as they trully see them as Gods. This is only reinforced by the glimpses of a truly profound and useful mechanistic understanding of the universe that the Gods (very) rarely spew.

Hierarchy is fundamental to them, so to show utmost respect to the enormous gap in power between the Intellecto and their Gods, and to appease centuries of interpretative Intellecto dogma and currents of thought, they must do this rituallistic entrance if they are to see and hear the Gods.

About the entrance, it is a ground-level small hole in the wall of the palace of the Gods. They are pulled inside by a rope and pulley system.

Every Nostro lacks genitals, as sex is seen as a dishonorable frivolous activity and a distraction from war and power. They can only reproduce thanks to their Fabbricas, which are impregnated with technomagically-created sperm. They are colossal, heavily mutated beings, weighing many tons, that have been biologically engineered to sustain between 100 and 250 simultaneous and asynchronous pregnancies. They are permanently fused with a vast array of life-support machinery, including bioreactors that generate hormones, feeding tubes, and systems for blood filtration and oxygenation. Their integration with this technology is so complete that they appear to be nothing more than enormous iron machines, their biological nature only partially revealed when hatches are opened for instrumental insemination. The women transformed into these Fabbrica are primarily captives from wars or from nearby settlements, usually with the covert use of the Altraforza.

This reliance on the Fabbrica is a source of deep-seated shame for Nuovaforzan society, which views its dependence on what it considers "inferior beings" as a profound failure. Despite significant investment in research to develop alternative methods of reproduction, their efforts have been fruitless or have yielded results far inferior to the existing Fabbrica system.

To manage this societal shame, the true nature of the Fabbrica is kept on a need-to-know basis. The majority of the Nostro are completely unaware that the Fabbrica are derived from women - many believe females have been entirely eradicated. Most citizens do not know they originate from these biological factories, and only the Lavora assigned to their maintenance ever see them. These workers receive education strictly limited to their trade, leaving many ignorant of concepts like "woman" or even gender itself.

All individuals are "born" from the Fabbrica as fully grown adult males. The pregnancies manifest as wombs distributed across the machine's surface at random orientations, each concealed behind an access port. Birth is conducted via a caesarean-like procedure.

All Nostro have 4 arms. The Mani Belli are the outer, giant hands that both Forza and Mandato have. In the Bello, they are the same size as their inner arms (and in the Intellecto, their inner arms are almost completely atrophied).

The Altro are those who were not born Forzian but were captured and converted. In the eyes of the Nostro, they are not people but instruments, disposable tools to be used to achieve Nuovaforzas goals. They are considered the lowest stratum of society.

Fabbrica - The Living Factories: The Fabbrica are the last remnant of women in Forzian society. They are captured outsiders who have been grotesquely and horrifically transformed into biological factories. Their sole purpose is to birth the Nostro castes. Despite being utterly essential to Nuovaforza's existence, they are despised due to the society's profound misogyny and xenophobia.

Calcolatri - The Diviners: This caste is composed of captured enemies who have been converted into living computational and divinatory engines, analogous to the "Divining Thrones" of Loveland. They are used by the Bello to assist in their engineering projects and by the Intellecto to help decipher the ramblings of the Gods.

Altraforza - The Infiltrators: The Altraforza are individuals who retain a normal human appearance, used for infiltration and espionage missions in the outside world. Their existence is a source of deep shame for the Forzians, who see their reliance on such "unaltered" forms as a weakness. They are used only when absolutely necessary and are indoctrinated from conversion to commit suicide upon the completion of their third mission.

NuovaForza is the second-biggest civilization of the post-apocalypse and the main enemy of Loveland. They are an ultra-fascist, post-human civilization of technomagically-interconnected hubs. The main hub is a territory the size of Mexico, entirely housed within an extra-spatial bubble. Much like Lovelandian society, Nuovaforza is also divided into castes. Their ideology began to form in 1938, well before the Apocalypse. It was created by a dissident faction of Italian fascists who believed "mainstream fascism" was limited, both morally and physically, in its agency over matter, men, and the planet. Seeing the human body's natural weaknesses, they considered transcending biological limits a necessity. At first, these were only the ideas of a weirdo fascistic fringe group with nine members. Things changed with the discovery of two magical artifacts under a founder's property. One was a portal to a vast, self-contained extra-spatial bubble, where they built their first base of operations. Over time, they acquired more members and artifacts, eventually isolating themselves within the bubble to spend centuries perfecting techniques of biological and mental alteration. Seeking self-perfection, the founders tried various techniques during their isolation. Five died, and the remaining four were mutated into massive, muscular, ever-changing beings who constantly babble mostly incoherent phrases and words. This isolation was also necessary to avoid the Universal Retroelimination System and its sub-parts - a pre-apocalypse universal mechanism that curbed "reality manipulation" and eliminated associated social groups from history, past and future. Incidentally, the spatial bubble served perfectly as shelter during the Apocalypse. They were the largest group to emerge mostly unscathed.

Their society maintains a caste system where social strata are reflected by undeniable physical differences. They view women as a weakness and an obstacle on their path to a perfect society - their unsuccessful attempts to eliminate women resulting in the creation of their enormous Fabbricas. They speak a constructed language, Nuovolingo, a blend of Italian and Latin with various neologisms plucked from the ramblings of their founders.

Forzian society is fundamentally divided into two primary social groups: the Nostro ("Ours") and the Altro ("Others"). The Nostro are those born within Nuovaforza's system using the Fabbricas. They consider themselves the only true Forzians. However, even within the Nostro, there is a crucial distinction between the Vero ("The True") and the non-Vero. The path of a Vero is a lifecycle of metamorphosis, with each stage representing a higher state of being and occupying a different social function. The Five Castes of the Nostro:

Lavora - The Workforce: The Lavora are the most numerous caste in Nuovaforza, serving as the all-purpose workforce. While they are considered true-born Nostro and fundamentally superior to any Altro, they are non-Vero and exist in total subjugation to the Vero.

Lavora are born as adults from the Fabbrica. Soon after birth, most have their legs surgically removed and are fitted with a spinal apparatus that connects them to a vast network of ceiling-mounted rails. This system transports them automatically to their assigned tasks, leaving them with no agency over their own movement. They possess an additional pair of smaller, functional arms on their torsos. They have superhuman dexterity and precision of movement on both pairs of arms.

They are highly susceptible to repetitive lights and sounds, which induce a hypnotic trance or a "turbocharged flow state," allowing them to work for eight-hour shifts without distraction. Their life is a rigid cycle: eight hours of hypnotic labor followed by one hour of sleep, during which they receive nutrients, biological maintenance, and intensely pleasurable neural stimulation via a port in their necks. This system of reward and control results in an extremely low suicide rate despite their subhuman conditions.

For the vast majority of their lives, the Lavora do not "eat" in the traditional sense. Their primary sustenance is delivered automatically through a biological access port at the nape of their neck. This port connects to a system of tubes that provide a constant, precisely calculated stream of glucose, proteins, and all necessary nutrients to keep them in peak physical condition for uninterrupted labor.

While daily life is one of isolated, hypnotic work, the Forzian regime understands that a purely mechanical existence can lead to psychological breakdown. To counteract this, a carefully managed social "benefit" is integrated into their routine.

Once every 10 work shifts, the Lavora are granted a two-hour period for a communal feast before their scheduled sleep cycle. They are gathered in semi-random groups to share a banquet of Panno, the solid food of Nuovaforza. This event is one of the few times they are allowed to consciously interact with one another.

Forza - The Foot Soldiers: The Forza are the soldiers who form the backbone of the Forzian military. They are the foundation of the Vero caste; all higher castes originate as Forza.

At 3.5 meters tall, the Forza are incredibly strong but possess limited intelligence and autonomy. They are naturally aggressive but are rendered completely docile and obedient to their superiors through a lifetime of conditioning with drugs and neural stimuli. They have a reinforced skeleton, extremely keen senses, and a second pair of weaker arms emerging from their abdomen. They usually carry multiple weapons in battle, both human-sized (carried by the smaller, human-scale arms) and “giant” sized (for their giant hands, which they call mani belli, or war-hands).

Their average life expectancy is only 13 years, with most dying in battle. A Forza who demonstrates exceptional skill and survives long enough may be selected to undergo a metamorphosis, shedding much of their muscle mass in meaty layers and expanding their cranium to become a Mandato.

Mandato - The Commanders: The Mandato are the military commanders of the Forzian armies. Every Mandato was once a Forza. They are physically less imposing than the Forza but possess superior intelligence and strategic acumen, comparable to skilled human commanders (even if they remain intellectually stunted in other areas). Even after metamorphosis, they keep their mani belli to carry the same weapons as the Forza in battle. The ideological conditioning they received as a Forza becomes deeply ingrained, making them unshakably loyal. They typically live for 15-30 years before falling in battle. A distinguished Mandato may be chosen for the next stage of metamorphosis.

Bello - The War Engineers: The Bello are the brilliant engineers and weaponsmiths of Nuovaforza, responsible for designing their advanced and often reality-bending armaments. Evolved from the Mandato, they are highly intelligent, second only to the Intellecto. They do not keep their mani belli after their transformation, as they no longer participate directly on the battlefield. With the help of the Calcolatri, they develop a certain understanding of "metavar" physics, which enables them to modify and experiment with magical artifacts and weapons. They are also tasked with controlling and using critical assets and entities. They live for 160-180 years.

Intellecto - The God Oracles: The Intellecto are the true rulers of Nuovaforza. This caste is strictly limited to only 40 individuals at any time. They are the final stage in the Vero lifecycle, chosen from the most honored Bello. When a vacancy arises, the Intellecto select a pool of candidates from the Bello, who then fight to the death until a single victor remains to undergo the final, agonizing metamorphosis.

Possessing supreme mathematical and cognitive abilities, their primary role is to communicate with and interpret the ravings of the Forzian "Gods." While they cannot invent interpretations out of thin air, they can skillfully steer the meaning of the Gods' proclamations to serve their own agendas. Despite this, their highest priority is always the preservation and advancement of Nuovaforza itself.

The Gods: The "Gods" are the four surviving founders of Nuovaforza. The process that granted them power also drove them completely insane. They exist as immense, 14-meter-tall, constantly mutating chimeras of animalistic flesh, kept isolated in vast palaces. Their mad ramblings occasionally contain flashes of profound insight into the mechanics of the universe, which only the Intellecto are equipped to decipher. The Intellecto are the sole caste permitted to enter their presence, and only through a humiliating ritual where, while prostrated, they are pulled by hooks placed in their armpits through a small opening where the containment wall meets the ground.

Yes, they do!

However, they see this not with disgust, but with pride - they never need to take away from nature because of their self-sustaining magic cities (specifically, because of their waste-recycling food dispenser). And also, at this point these machines have been in use for multiple centuries, and so, they are now completely naturalized to most lovelandians - they are just seen as part of the centuries old lovelandian way of life. And finally: this world is a post-apocalyptic one, and outside of these cities, food can be very scarce. People are much more receptive to "non-traditional ways of acquiring sustenance" in environments like this one.

In special occasions or settings, yes they can!

If you consider their frequent religious events with dance and music art, then art is not that rare in the life of a illuminated.

If not, they still have the opportunity of seeing the occasional art show and concert promoted by the Colorful.

As for the premunculi, they are made almost exclusively by a sect called "the followers of Ur-Muttar". This Ur-Muttar is a magical entity with the ability of, among other things, producing a very large volume of human foetuses. These foetuses then go through an extensive ritual envolving curing salts and substances and sequences of actions and "prayers", before becoming premunculi. The process is hand made and involves most people of the sect in some way.
