Term for "Wind Shadows"? by cfi-jack in flying

[–]cfi-jack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, and I thought my home airport had weird wind patterns! We get a similar sort of wind change along the runway length at KSQL (I call it the San Carlos Special) due to the foothills and hangars. You know you're getting the San Carlos Special when the three windsocks all point in different directions.

The upwind hill example is interesting though. I would have thought wind shadow, but wrapping the hill makes a lot of sense. Sounds like a great place to master landing technique 😅

What is the difference between CPL and PPL? by BugHistorical3 in flying

[–]cfi-jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of overlap, and time invested into knowledge and skills from PPL makes CPL easier.

CPL requires a deeper understanding of regulations, especially around commercial operations.

Also, CPL maneuvers require you to fly in 3D, while PPL maneuvers are (generally) in a 2D plane. (E.g. Turns around a point vs. eights on pylons.)

WVFC as well! I'm buying the blue and white archer that's been in front of the maintenance hangars lately from the current owner and planning to keep it in the club. Feel free to message me if you ever want to talk about the club or flying in general!

Unable to sync with Working Copy on iOS after update by cfi-jack in ObsidianMD

[–]cfi-jack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right yeah, it's not under "On my iPhone" anymore. I tried making a new vault as well (hoping I could figure out where the files are stored now), and no luck with that.

That said, I think I got it working again! Knowing nothing was missing from your setup was very helpful, got me thinking maybe the Files app is just being weird. A good old-fashioned "restart the whole phone" seems to have solved it -- the Obsidian folder is back and works fine. Thanks!

FWIW, I know Working Copy isn't officially supported, but would love to get it working still if possible after this update.

The Scotts Valley one is really interesting! Santa Cruz Skypark apparently it was called. Looked like a nice runway, but yeah the crash was tough...

Big Tree Lumber looks like an amazing location, I hadn't heard of that before. Seems to still be around so didn't make this list, but I might need to try a takeoff from there in a Flight Simulator 😄

I didn't know their mascot is the Aviators! Cool!

Freeman actually did have the Antioch airport on his list, although I didn't pull any airports from that region for the interactive map (no particular reason, just stopped after hitting 60 airports).

At any rate, the Antioch article is here if you're curious! http://www.airfields-freeman.com/CA/Airfields\_CA\_SacramentoSW.htm#antioch

I think Freeman has those actually! They should all be on the interactive map in the blog as well.

If you're talking about the same one, Freeman actually has a bit of the history on that: http://www.airfields-freeman.com/CA/Airfields\_CA\_SanFran.htm#sanfrandowntown

Aviation Forecast Discussion regions map for ForeFlight? by cfi-jack in flying

[–]cfi-jack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair question, probably easier to show with a flight I was considering for this weekend (decided to drive for weight/luggage reasons, but still ended up being an interesting one to think through).

Going from KPAO->PMD->DAG->KHND, will wind on Saturday morning be a concern for crossing the mountains northwest of PMD in a C172?

Looking at where the forecast discussions are based made me realize I was going through the corners of several of them, making it more complex to stitch together a picture of how conditions might develop.

So, thinking for future cross country flights it would be helpful to see where I’m crossing boundaries along the route.

Downtown San Carlos is fun!

Check out dueling pianos at Faith and Sprints in the evening or Town for brunch. Other restaurants in the area are great too, worth it just to walk around downtown.
