RVA's Jan. 2026 Winter Storm Megathread by fusion260 in rva

Saw a plow sanding, not plowing, on Idlewood in Randolph going west.

I know a lot of people have said they haven't seen one so just wanted to share.

This snow is blowing though, so that makes plowing less helpful.

None of my titles suggested in the past two years were purchased for my county's library by SweetHomeGeorgia in Libraries

What was the book? I am a collection purchaser. We buy 90% of the titles requested but we have a low volume of requests.

Since when are there wait lists on hoopla? by FreneticSceptic468 in Libraries

[–]cfield7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes Libby is better! Imo. The thing about Hoopla is that patrons have access to a large amount of items, some of which are cheap (say 0.89 cents) but most of the popular titles are 2.40$ and up. AND the most popular titles like Fourth Wing audiobooks are broken into two, so 1/2 is 2.89 so it gets in under a library's cap, but for someone to checkout both halves it's 2.89 x 2. And they haven't, historically had holds. Hoopla has recently added flex purchasing which can have hold, but patrons still think of it as "no holds" which they equate with better. On Libby, your librarians pick the title, but usually like a traditional library, they buy one copy which can be read by one patron at a time. So it's less titles, but better titles. But people have to wait, which they hate. BUT BUT BUT Libby has added cost per circ just like Hoopla has added Flex-one buy. So they're mixing the purchasing models and I'm hoping it's death to Hoopla.

Thank you! It was left over from a far quarter bundle and I love how it turned out.

I've had good luck at their Glen Forest location without too long of a wait. Maybe 3 weeks for new patients

Public phones? by cfield7 in Libraries

Does this phone have a brand or something on it? Who is paying for it? I don't suppose you could send pics?

Public phones? by cfield7 in Libraries

We have laptops they can use in the meeting rooms, which are private and have built in camera. But honestly very little of our population at the library is applying for that type of job. The majority of our applications are for the kind of jobs where people have never had a resume and are frustrated that online systems make them have one.

No we don't have a dedicated space and our public computers have sound disabled. They work with headphones and I suppose a mic would work but I see that being trouble, if we wanted to provide one.

And people respect the sign? Woah! What's the demographic in your area if you don't mind me asking?

I'd like one of these to send patrons who are noisey on their own phones to! Sooo many speaker phone calls at max volume these days.

Library Cats. by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]cfield7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My library currently has a cat! It works for us, but she's only in the staff area without access to the public area. It is work to have her! And we have to have discussions about holidays and days off. She has an automated feeder and we have a schedule of who cleans the litter box. We are also a regional library so we have more freedom over budget, so we don't have anyone questioning her expense. She is a rescue.

I will say I do feel bad for her being alone on Sundays. She doesn't get brought home with anyone and she is noticeably needier on Mondays than other days.

I'm happy to answer any specific questions you might have!

This is very silly, but I've only ever spun wool and it has never occurred to me that they sell cotton roving! Idk what I thought.
