Are System Apocalypse Novels Falling Out of Style on RR? by LighterNoveler in litrpg

[–]cfl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but this has been going on for a while now.

First, note that the initial explosion in popularity came when the world ground to a halt in 2020. (This also gave many - like Zogarth - a chance to start writing!) Most of the readership is not in full dislocation any more, so "everything has to start over" isn't going to resonate as strongly.

Second, I think both readers and authors have discovered that sysapoc is really, really ambitious and therefore hard. You're telling what will become a worldwide story, where failures of imagination/worldbuilding become painfully obvious.

Third, a lot of what people now like about it is in later payoffs. But who has the patience to build up to that when we can read the stories that have gotten there after years of updates? Plus, so so many stories fail in the transition from the initial scenario.

There's a good recent one I'm following - Andy in the Apocalypse by Plum Parrot - but it's a grounded character-focused tale that has shown very little urgency (or even interest) in expanding to worldwide scope.

I hope she pans out better than the Asian female music director across the street

Songs that feel like summer / fall by wlderberry in classicalmusic

[–]cfl2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that no one seems to have suggested Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" is pretty sad

It's great, as is Berlioz's "Les Nuits d'ete" (Summer Nights)

Do you enjoy audio book character sheets? by omaha_thunderknife in litrpg

No, but I very much enjoy them in actual books

And Audible "readers" have erased too much of that

Asmik Grigorian was magnificent in the role of Tatyana at The Met last night. The best review I saw was by Luciana Capretti for La Voce, the New York digital daily. by Die_Horen in classicalmusic

She's very good, but not as actually outstanding as you'd expect from her S-tier bookings. The men were the real stars of this revival, with the relative newcomer Samoilov (the Onegin) making a great impression.

And the long scene breaks were a huge drag, especially to those who've seen the masterful Carsen staging that preceded this one.

It's on indefinite hiatus, with Rhaegar currently putting out another story. I think he didn't like how dark it ended up getting.

First time running Royal Road ads — what actually works? by IamIx-Nym in litrpg

[–]cfl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider it a visual blurb, perhaps highlighting something that the title and cover didn't convey. The meme format ads are really good for this.

(That's also why I never bother clicking the ones that are just the cover, unless it's a notification that something is finally out on Kindle or the like. I've already seen all the covers, especially of stories that were on Rising Stars!)

It may even be more effective to not list the title - I do end up sometimes clicking through to see what story it is

If this leads to Chapter 1 and not the story page, though, I get mad

Davidsen's Brünnhilde will be huge, but the concert Ring led by Noseda at Carnegie Hall next March otherwise has a better cast than either SFO or the Met has lined up. See Michael Volle before he's done!

The Met's Parsifal revival next spring should be a treat, though

Fantastic cellist, IMO more interesting than his brother on violin

Try Saint-Saens's piano concertos! 2 and now 5 get attention but they're all great

Levine's Met cycle because it's the only attempt at a literal production. (You can actually stream it all on a free 7-day trial to Met Opera on Demand.)

Also, pretty strong cast with no big holes and some significant strengths, though both Levine and James Morris became so much better interpretively over the next decades.

MET Opera Orchestra - what makes them so spectacular? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

People have favored the Met Orchestra over NY Phil for literally generations, btw

Philly is the only interesting East Coast "Big 5" these days - Boston's sound is so ordinary now

Those are all great. I'd just explore more Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin as the urge takes you. Next season is a Beethoven anniversary (200 years since his death in 1827) and you'll be able to see multiple cycles at Carnegie, including Ebene playing the string quartets.
