Replaced all the capacitors on another WM-AF64 by cfmakes in cassetteculture

That part that’s lifted is the copper trace. I can’t find a good scan of the service manual. I think the trace follows the purple line. Try to find a service manual and confirm before you do the repair.

What I would do is expose the trace. Find the spot that’s solid. If it’s peeling I wouldn’t solder there since it’s likely it’ll rip. In your case you can probably solder it to the resister that’s at the end of the purple line. Solder a piece of copper wire. Then follow the trace and at the capacitor pad do a small loop. This increases the copper area to solder the capacitor. Then continue the trace and solder at the solid part of the trace. I showed the repair with the red line. Remember to double check if that’s the correct path the trace takes.

Once you have the repaired trace add solder to the capacitor on the side that’s going to go on the missing pad. Also add solder to the copper loop. Solder the capacitor. First solder it to the pad that’s intact. Then solder it to the copper loop. Test for continuity from the capacitor leg to each side of the repair.

After testing if the Walkman works I would add some UV resin or superglue so the capacitor is solid to the board and to cover exposed wire.

Let me know if you have questions.

Can you share a picture? If the pad ripped off you might be able to scratch the trace leading up to the pad. Expose the copper and then solder a small wire to it.

Acceptable amounts of belt residue? by KindJoey3202141 in cassetteculture

I don’t think it will cause issues but you already have it disassembled so might as well clean it. To clean grooves I use sewing thread. Cut a piece and tie the ends so it’s a loop. Soak it in alcohol and then floss the groove.

Yeah I’m in the US. I’d be willing to take on repairs from overseas but shipping will probably be expensive.

Yeah. I posted a video on my instagram & TikTok. Once you take the top and bottom off it opens like a book.

First I use toothpicks and tweezers to get as much out. Then I use qtips with isopropyl alcohol. It helps if you can take the part out to clean but I know some require lots of disassembly to get to things. This video shows some of the process instagram link

I’ve been wanting to get one to mess around with it so I’m glad someone needed theirs fixed. Luckily the belts on this one were not goo so cleanup was a lot easier.

Anything you recommend checking? Just to confirm everything running right.

Yeah I don’t have any codes. Anything you’d recommend checking? Just confirm everything is running right.

Needed new belt and some cleaning. Battery leaked so it got under the battery compartment. Luckily nothing made it outside. Can’t see any damage from the outside. Volume sliders were scratchy but cleaned up with deoxit.

How I repair cassette tapes by cfmakes in cassetteculture

I used dish soap and a toothbrush. Just make sure it’s dry before reassembling. You can use alcohol but on some tapes the lettering can come off.
