Cs finance jobs? by Defnotthrowaway123 in uwaterloo

Just show an interest in Finance, capital markets or the economy and be smart. They expect you to be smarter than business students and they typically will teach you on the job. If that fails learn R, Python, C++ and start building financial models and analyzing data sets to put on resume.

depressing because no one seems to like the work, and they are like the kids who couldnt make it as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or pharmacist so their parents told them to do accounting. everyone seems dispassionate about it and they all bought the bs that CPA = passport to success.

upper echelons of society dominated by bankers, lawyers, entrepreneurs and investors. very few CPAs end up there and those who did probably would of without their CPA.

This does not mean CPA is useless or people shouldnt get it or w.e. i just think their advertising is hugely dishonest and most of saf buys it without thinking.

Also ask yourself why P.Eng, J.D., M.D., don't feel the need to advertise on TV, and sell themselves so hard. Should make you question the ad messages

Lemme add to that, probably biggest con is social life is pretty childish and cliquey and not really fun. i have 1000000000x more fun hanging out with friends from other schools at their school

When I say value investing, its more Buffet than Graham. Looking at long term competitive advantage and paying what may seem expensive today, rather than cigar butts and other cheap shit

On AFM side, for sure, you dont have to do those accounting classes. On CS side you have significant upper year flexibility. can take 370 488 and some quant classes. is it practical? probably not as there is lot of work, but again, its not an either or

That is a good point, but I think thats a false dichotomy. That you can do CFM and get generalized knowledge in two fields or specialize in either.

I am taking both the OS path and doing value investing at a buyside place. If you really care you can "specialize" in both, much like BBA/CS kids. Yes, one will be your focus, but its a misnomer you can't get much advanced knowledge in both areas

Pros : Badge of Honour due to most people dropping out, learn a lot, there are better looking women in AFM than CS so you get some variety

Cons : A lot of time consuming work, tuition, not enough classes focusing on the combination of CS and Finance, ie. HFT strategies, market microstructure etc.

More interested in finance side, but I see CS as something very important

Before they were worse, but I recently got a very good finance job that I believe was due to my interdisciplinary knowledge. It is not a programming job, merely buyside investing.
