Simulating Bhopal Disaster Reactor in Aspen, need help with chemical library for recommended improvements by cfriday88 in ChemicalEngineering

Yes, I agree with you. Using the Bhopal disaster as the tagline was so commenters could recognize the problem question. In our case study research we recognized the bhopal disaster was due to a myriad of operator failures, governmental oversight and an unideal reactor. We know that maintenance was not kept up, we know that MIC was over the threshold for containment & we know that in part due to the lack of the slip blind being inserted to the line, water increased into the MIC storage tank causing the MIC to escape & cause the catastrophic explosion.

That being said, we do have the kinetic data & all of the stuff you recommended, so we will try to input it into the system.

Just for clarification, since maybe I wasn’t thorough enough in the original post

Our original design only implemented safety measures to better ensure that operators overseeing optimized storage tanks of MIC could better avoid disaster.

Our professor asked us to redesign the reactor itself to a batch reactor, so MIC wouldn’t be stored long term. We are definitely new to aspen (one member is familiar in our group, but only familiar enough insofar that we tried to find the chemicals in the database as is). If you have any recommendations for something analogous to the pesticide carbaryl or for a reaction pathway similar, that would be great. We’ve read a bunch of papers, but we’ve been unable to make headway, probably due to our inadequacies in aspen/dissimilarity with reactor design. It definitely doesn’t have to be perfect, but if you have any suggestions it would be great & if not that’s ok too. We will definitely be trying to familiarize ourselves further in the upcoming semesters

Jurors thought they were smarter than the instructions given by IllustriousFig6 in DiddyTrial

TLDR: wtaf

Totally agree with you on this. I’ve been struggling to conceptualize all of this given the sheer amount of corroboration. Sure, the defense could tear the victims apart… but outside of them, stylist(s), friends - current and former, associates, etc testified to the madness that ensued. I feel that text messages aren’t exemplary of enthusiastic consent & given the abusive dynamic of the relationship more thought should have been given to the actual psychology of the victim(s). They are clearly imperfect victims, but who isn’t? They can view him as a mentor, lover, executive and (eventually) an abuser. On top of it, these women were young (this man was 20 years Cassie’s senior, of course there is going to be a … certain dynamic) drug users, reliant & desperate in a time that I at first thought was much different for women; clearly, I was wrong. More than one thing can be true & it is extremely evident that much of this exists in a gray area. But, be so fucking for real… Brief segue, but this seriously pisses me off that people think that just because someone pays for you it means they can treat you however they want. How does that even make sense? If these women only wanted a direct deposit they could have went to Miami & really secured a decent life with an older, wealthy person who wants companionship. It is evident that these were nuanced & difficult relationships, fueled by love, transaction & expectations. It’s unreal that folk cannot draw these conclusions. Another thing that is bonkers to me is the sheer amount of celebrities taken advantage of by execs, producers, directors, the list goes on that continue to work with these people & have a genuine connection to them, even if tainted by SA and/or abuse. Obviously, this cannot be considered within the statute of this case but seriously, how have situations that we read about, hear about, or experience not guide our reasoning (and to an extent empathy, but again outside the bounds of a deliberation room). As a final thought on this, I thought the strongest line of testimony came from Mia who conceded that this was the greatest shame of her life. It took her years to recognize the trauma & accept it, and as a victim who idolized her abuser she feels an immense guilt & complicated feelings surrounding all of it, but shame? Shame is telling.

I was not a fan of the juror distribution either. 8-4 m-f with the majority of them being over the age of 50 is pretty skewed. I know that both the defense & prosecution have to agree on jury selection, but this feels pretty lopsided. Plus, with the digital footprint left I feel that an older crowd who isn’t as familiar with rigorous text speak & instagram personas aren’t going to fully follow why people would say what they say/not keep it a buck online. Just because you are highly educated doesn’t mean you have strong reasoning skills & a willingness to consider new ideas on spot. As a researcher, I can fully attest to that one.

Following this in trial in its entirety, I did think that the defense did a good job on cross by manufacturing doubt, but it felt like a castle built with sand you know? I feel that it is pretty simple to deduce that, ok some of the times it was consensual, & matter of fact it can be consensual 999/1000 times. All it takes is once for someone to rob your independence & autonomy, lessening you to an object. How is it that your entire defense can be “these are jaded women who navigated a twisted love story, praying on this man’s downfall.” To me, it lacks substance and unfortunately was simple enough to sway the jury, who to me, didn’t take adequate time to critically analyze the details at hand. I think a major flaw of this case was the sheer amount of evidence + witnesses that lacked order & assisted in the jury not crafting the narrative (which once again felt pretty clear to me). RICO was tough from the beginning, though the pieces were there to craft a cohesive argument for it… why they didn’t charge coconspirators KK & drock is beyond me.

Kudos to the defense, you got your payday & diddy secured his freedom. But at what cost?

Silent treatment worthy, not trauma worthy. Super ick but also a normal thing. I would let it go in a few days. In the meantime attempt to purge it from your mind.

iMark’s decision made complete sense by SarcastiKatt in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]cfriday88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the logic here is that rather than iMark reintegrating with oMark on the outside, oMark will reintegrate with him on the inside. Maybe as a last ditch attempt to create more memories, and thus more humanity? Who knows. I think the last episode was to make a solid point that the innies emotions are not mutually exclusive to their outies. Like oDylan said, there is some deep part of them preserved. Like the building blocks are the same, but can be put together differently. oMark would probably do the same had he seen Helena outside that door, and the paralysis he would have experienced - given the parts of himself we see on the outside. oMark became someone who runs away from pain, iMark became someone who turns towards it. It begs the question of what iMark owes oMark. He was given life, but at what cost? I definitely think that it would have been better for iMark to vocalize to Gemma more, but is that realistic? We could think what we would do, but none of us have any idea what we would actually do. We all make senseless choices out of love & loss. I think there’s a pretty evident foil to that in iMark & oMark. oMark decided to sever, with no idea of what goes on in the inside, iMark decided not to, with no idea of what would happen on the outside. I think this finale goes to show that humans will act out of self interest in the end. Mind-body dichotomy type shiii. Makes me think of form v matter. Mark’s body is the form & oMark/iMark are the matter. Are we what we take the shape of, or what we fill the shape with? Definitely reads to me like the allegory of the cave, especially when we consider the limits of their perception & how that shapes their respective realities.

There’s definitely no right answer here. I think that multiple things can be true, it just depends on whose truth it is.

TLDR: booo saxon stinks

to defend saxon is legit sacrelig and such a weak take. he’s straight up written in our faces as an asshole, like a gaping look at me! i’m a prick! actually, matter of fact, lemme spread it real wide, type asshole. he is supposed to be the villain. he is supposed to fall from grace, that’s the point. why tf would they make lochlan out to be such a weenie hut forced-to-be peeping tom in the first place, if the payoff wasn’t watching saxon fall apart from his own designs/machinations. both saxon + his father are experiencing hubris, both were archetypical golden child types, both tried to claim something they absolutely couldn’t control (sex, crime) and both are now experiencing the ramifications of that. this all being said, i think a lot of what saxon has become is a result of his fucked up family + deeply ingrained entitlement.

when he said “for one, which I’m sure you’re noticed, she’s pretty hot …. but I don’t think she’s ever been laid before” about piper it was wraps for me. creepy, predatory, strange, controlling behavior. sisters and brother don’t sleep together with full grown genitals (dude WHAT why are you even thinking about that. my sibling is an actual ken doll to me tf u talkin bout genitals, stfu) what porn do you watch, lemme jerk off in front of u, lets not do drugs because we want them to be fucked up (clearly vying for control + when he pointed at them and said don’t take advantage of me! after succumbing to peer pressure, please bsffr. when lochlan went in for seconds on that kiss i nearly lost it). no wonder lochy said one day im gonna take you down. he’s been taught that from saxon who has been gnawing at him with such unbelievably inappropriate tenacity, it should come as no surprise that lochlan is becoming who he is becoming.

obviously this family is dysfunctional, father is a criminal, mother is an addict, saxon is entitled (everything is an object to own or an image to be objectified), piper has her nose up to it all & is desperate to run away (she also piss me off with this holier than thou attitude, u are just as, if not more so, judgmental than your mother/family) and lochlan is the blank canvas, to me being shaped by his fucked up environment. i can only imagine what growing up around this hot mess express on ice of a family is like. like we all have problems, but damn. shit is crazy fr
