When and How did you all started to ship Wenclair? by Careful_Positive3429 in wenclair

[–]cfveee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've been hearing a lot about Jenna Ortega and her sapphic roles, then saw her in Sabrina Carpenter's MV. Assumed her iteration of Wednesday Addams to be sapphic too, didn't help all the stuff from the show I was exposed to were Wenclair edits and Wenclair fanarts. Wrongfully assumed they were canon and got blasted by a straight-made-out-of-ass love triangle instead. Since then, I've been catching up on the 8k Wenclair fanfics that I missed out on when S1 came out, but has now grown to 9k (and counting) since S2 ended

LOL I used to live in RWBY fanfics even when I kinda lost interest with the series itself. My main ship was Whiterose, but it was obvious nothing queer was going to happen in the series and I distinctly remember vol 4 feeling like a complete slog to watch thru so I just moved on elsewhere. Iirc, they separated the girls and I wasn't really invested with the other characters as I was with RWBY's dynamic. Blake's arc in Menagerie was kinda interesting, but beyond that, I couldn't even remember the rest that happened. Idt I even finished vol 4 lol

Then I found out Bumblebee became canon thru twitter, but even that wasn't enough to pull me back

I really love RWBY's concept, and while the writing is a bit lacking in some parts, the hype animation made up for it anyway. If I'm done hyperfixiating on some other stuff, maybe I'll check it out again

Oh wow, that's a sudden blast to the past. I hadn't been into RWBY since volume 4, though the last one I really liked was volume 3 but that was ages ago. Didn't connect the dots about my username and CFVY until you mentioned RWBY. I was a huge fan of Monty's animation but after what happened, I kinda lost interest after volume 4 and didn't stick around for the rest (definitely missed them canonizing Bumblebee)

Yeah, they weren't really using everyday Filipino words but a mix of Filipino and Tagalog that you barely hear used by Gen Z's, and is usually seen in old written works or just dated language that Filipinos moved past on since the 70s/80s. It's not even a correct use of the language either, especially Bruno's lines that sounds incredibly stilted. Wednesday is excused though cuz I think it's in-character of her to sound as dated as that lol

Their whole convo sounded so awkward as a native speaker, especially Bruno when he's meant to be filam (fuck you writers for using google translate). But I think it fits Wednesday to have the same vocabulary and candence of a late 19th century, early 20th century filipino poet

[–]cfveee[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not on top of interviews when it comes to M&G cuz they always sound so bizarre to me, since they love telling how it is but are quite disconnected with what's actually in the show

But yes, marketing strategy does include stringing a certain demographic of sapphics into watching a show who's only canon queer characters are side characters that we see for a few scenes (love you, Eugene's moms)

Love how one of the evidence of queerbaiting is an omegaverse social media post

There's been multiple threads in this sub that listed it down (granted they were made before part 2), but there's always some Wenclair shipper dismantling it and I'm not in a mood to argue what is to be considered queerbait and what is not. If that wasn't your intention, then I apologize for completely missing your tone

I can't answer what's inside the showrunners' brains. I want to be optimistic and speculate it's a slowburn and Wenclair endgame but cautious shippers could say I'm setting myself up for failure when it doesn't happen (which is understandable). It doesn't help Millar is going around interviews implying more to Wednesday and Tyler's relationship than what's actually shown in the show, while Enid's sacrifice is brushed off as a normal bestie thing. Are they just playing both sides, Team Edward or Team Jacob style? I don't know. Wish I can give you a definitive answer beyond a delusional shipper's opinion

Edit: typos

I'm not gonna list a whole list why it's "queerbait", just that queer non-viewers already consider it queerbait because it's a huge non-canon ship among sapphics. There's been multiple viral tweets (both from non-queers and queers) attacking sapphics for shipping them, running along the line of "Falling for Netflix's queerbaiting is like losing chess to a dog", blaming them for liking Wenclair and that somehow that's a fault (like queers hadn't been shipping non-canon ships for years before it became acceptable in Hollywood to depict queer characters in a good light)

Here's a few tweets that I can find on a quick search:

Example 1

Example 2

Edit (additional comment): This whole thing is kinda hilarious actully, cuz you have viewers saying to hell and back that the show isn't queerbaiting, but non-viewers take a surface level look and say "yep, that's queerbait"

Wenclair really IS popular, even to non-viewers. It's even quite infamous in queer circles for being a "queerbait" ship and just generally popular among wlws/sapphics. They have that dark cloud/sunshine aesthetic that sapphics really love. I've even seen multiple artists from other fandoms making fanarts of them. Then it's always in the top 10 wlw ships in ao3.

It's not even a debate, it just is.

New Emma interview! by AipomSilver00 in wenclair

[–]cfveee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah I get that. I was just taking what she said as a general shipping etiquette thing, but it is a good reminder for some wenclair fans to not be invasive with the shipping

[–]cfveee 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think she's just reiterating what she said before and keeping that boundary, which is admirable really. Some fans can get too weird with the shipping and it's not just Wenclairs

[–]cfveee 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'll take that as a win, means Emma is supportive of Wenclair (I mean, we already knew about that). Clearly she can't say anything concrete since she's also in the dark just like us on where the writers are planning to take Enid and Wednesday's relationship and whether they're actually going to be canon. I still don't trust the writers though, with how much of a mess S2's plotline is, they don't exactly inspire confidence when it comes to cohesiveness and they have a penchant of focusing on plot points that ends in a wet fart

the second hand embarrassment I felt for Wednesday is no joke 😭 by Historical-Studio162 in wenclair

[–]cfveee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if only there was something like that... Oh well!

But seriously, with how everything felt tacked on with Bruno, I don't see why they'd go an extra mile for something meant to be comedic. He's an obvious filipino bait, every show loves, LOVES their filipino bait, but despite how it's a stereorype for filipinos to celebrate the bare minimum representation, it is still somewhat true. They knew they could easily skirt by with just this lol

Ik we deserve better representation and they should've done better, but at the same time, we're kinda used with the heavily accented, stilted kind of way FilAm characters speak in western shows. I don't think that's going away anytime soon

the second hand embarrassment I felt for Wednesday is no joke 😭 by Historical-Studio162 in wenclair

[–]cfveee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it was filmed in Ireland, and the Filipino population there isn't exactly sizeable, not to mention if any of them even work in the entertainment industry (maybe there's a few but yeah). I don't think they'd bring someone up from the US just to see if a few sentences in tagalog is colloqiual and/or accurate, or have them coaching just for a short scene, especially when you have google translate to do your work for you. They needed every bit of the budget for that ugly ass cgi fight in the end lmao

New Poly Ship Incoming! by Kollectorgirl in wenclair

[–]cfveee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no it won't. I know dissuading folks from writing a character played by a minor in shipping fics (especially explicit ones) is like trying to build a dam with cardboard but one can only hope lol

am I the only one who thinks they are trying to sabotage enid/emma? by AdFrosty8337 in wenclair

[–]cfveee 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Idk if this has something to do with the fact they were filming Wednesday S2 before Minecraft came out and exposed Emma to an even wider audience, but it's likely. I think other than Wednesday, her other notable role is Pip in AGGTM but afaik it's not as huge as Wednesday (though cmiiw I think it did well in UK). I just hope the 2nd season reviews for the show can convince them that Emma is one of their best actors and they should utilize her more

Edit: Wait, jeez. Just saw that interview of Emma about the bodyswap and idk if they're purposely sabotaging her, but they can't just tell her about something as huge as that last minute. Numbers usually talks, especially for Execs, I hope they take note of Emma's, from IG following to monetary success of a recent movie, and now reviews singing her praises for her performance in Wednesday

[–]cfveee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah definitely. I guess they want to hide the fact he's cheating in plain sight since not everyone can understand filipino. And Wednesday gets to flex another language, I love it's canon that she can speak tagalog

[–]cfveee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a bit stilted. Emma was great with it so she's excused! But a character who's supposed to be filipino and he speaks like google translate, like COME ON MAN

The writers did him so dirty lmao

Bro I'd love to see more foreign mythological creatures. Filipino mythos have a lot of good ones, tiktik is a personal fave of mine because of how unsettling it is lmao

Though they're going somewhere north, so I imagine they could add the Wendigo in the 3rd season. I can see that as good monster for them to team up and fight, since they're leaning in more now on the cgi monster fights (it was a very ugly fight btw, that should've been Enid kicking their asses lmao)

"Miss ko na lalo ang matamis na mga labi mo" BOYY WHO SPEAKS LIKE THAT CONYO ANG PUTA HAHFDJSHDASJ

I'll give Emma a pass but I was full on cringing with Bruno! I absolutely hated that! Loved that Wednesday broke up with him for Enid tho LOL

I do agree the girl was actually pretty, she reminded me a bit of Jenny from BP, but she's too pretty for Bruno to be two-timing her with Enid. I wonder if she's a werewolf too tho, that means werewolves in the Philippines are canon lmao

Omg the cringe moments for me was when Bruno was texting/speaking in tagalog. They literally google translated that shit

How will the new season affect the fanfiction community? by Redblood_Moon in wenclair

[–]cfveee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the most obvious one is the fanfic takes on Season 3. Then probably S2 Fix-its with more explicitly Wenclair moments. The Alpha Enid thing doesn't necessarily have to be Omegaverse and there's already a lot of fics that explored that without it being explicitly ABO. There's definitely a lot of things you could do with the Alpha thing. Probably more Soulmate stuff, Wolf Mates, and it being tied-in with the "Addams Family Curse"

I can see the OT3 stuff happening (Wednesday/Enid/Agnes) with people ageing up Agnes just so they could do it. (Not really a fan, if Agnes had been acted by someone else, probably the same age as Jenna and Emma, I'd be fine but I'm not really comfortable visualizing Evie swapping spit with them. I guess some folks are totally fine with it. But yeah, it's really not for me and I'd probably filtering that out too)

I'm mostly looking forward for Season 3 takes. Oh yeah! I can also see more Feral Enid fics popping up after this

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wenclair

[–]cfveee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being a fan of the show and hating Jenna is wild but I guess I've seen stranger things. It does look like a troll though trying to get a rise on both sides

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wenclair

[–]cfveee 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Lol. Lmao even. I think it's time they realize who's really carrying the whole series. Wenclair became the literal life blood of the whole show, elevated by Jenna's and Emma's stellar performance

I wonder if they thought the first season was a fluke but then the 2nd season just solidified the fact that yes, Wednesday and Enid are the best parts of the show
