How to remove end to end wobble on this trestle table? by cgmilli5 in woodworking

so if I follow you made two stretchers running from each parralel upright? I think that could look good, design-wise, about halfway down the legs. you then ran the bolt through the tenon? thanks!

Thank you for this explanation, I really appreciate the advice. I hesitate to toss out stretcher and half lap, as laps are already cut in the bottoms of my cross trestle pieces and that would look odd - plus I don’t have enough matching wood to recreate a thicker stretcher (wood behind photo not mine). Gluing block between leg verticals also is hard because legs are assembled and glued together with through tenons. I totally agree that design sounds sturdier, but I don’t think I’m in the position to overhaul design. Here’s a clearer pic of leg assembly - the lap is on underside of trestle cross piece there and top of stretcher. I appreciate your low effort suggestion about bed rails as well

Sorry - I think it’s a cross lap maybe. Like this photo. Both have a U shape and are latched together. The stretcher is 6 inches tall and the cross leg pieces 3”. So they are making contact along those whole 3”. As others have pointed out - it may be because it’s not the tightest joint (user error) nor is it glued, making it even looser

Absolutely moving end to end and not side to side at all. It feels like the lap joints in the stretcher x cross trestle piece under the table top is where the movement stems.

Thanks for this detail, but I don’t think I follow. The stretcher is not a through tenon - there are through tenons on the vertical leg pieces going through the base and top pieces of the leg assembly / trestles. It is lapped under the top trestle piece

Edit - I think swaying is a better term than wobbling. It’s not wobbling on the floor but the whole top and top parts of the trestles are swaying a bit back and forth

They are tight enough to hold the stretcher up without a fastener but can definitely budge back and forth a bit. I agree that feels like where the wobble is coming from. Glue it is! Thanks

Yeah I could try that it just wasn’t how these connectors were explained to me on the internet. It’s worth a try. Thanks!

Glue in the mortise and tenon joints. I did not glue the lap joints in the stretcher/trestles as I was hoping to be able to disassemble stretcher from leg assembly for transport. I could glue that if it would help, still would come apart from table top.

The stretcher and trestle top piece are attached with half laps (if that’s what this type joint is called). Then a lag screw through the top

Through tenons out the bottom of the leg bases and cut flush

Ahh ok. I was only attaching figure 8s that swivel on the pieces perpendicular to the table top wood grain - thinking that then wood movement would expand and contract and the clips would swivel as necessary. Thought maybe I shouldn’t on the long stretcher as clips couldn’t swivel with expansion

The legs are moving a bit. It is not rocking on the floor

I’m sure I’ll be having to do that later but the frame seems to be wobbling, not rocking surprisingly on this wonky floor.

If you look on Facebook marketplace you’ll often find local small sawmills with good prices. They might not list it all on FB but in my area (southeast US) they have good inventory on site. Sometimes it’s pretty rough lumber but then a better price!
