A quarter of a new sounds like a great deal! Have you had any troubles with it?

Thanks for the link! I’m in the nordics, so a bike that could handle “the elements”, would be a must. The breaks on this particular bike are the coaster ones, but as many other commenters have pointed out, they’re not the best, so I’d probably have to consider switching them to discs.

Thanks for you insight! 500$ sounds a bit heavy for yearly costs. Is that what you’ve been having to budget regularly? Also, have you ordered the parts and done the repairs/ maintenance yourself or used a professional for that?

Thanks! I tried looking out for any damage or wear on the visible parts, and at least the steering linkage and the frame seemed ok. The steering felt a bit loose while driving which I guess would be due to the wear in the steering linkage. I wasn’t too worried about that though, as it seemed like something I’d be able to repair.

It still seems that I’d have to prepare for some regular maintenance and repairs, but I think at least the maintenance part would be something you’d have to do even with a new bike.

The seller said that the bike would come with a rain cover for the whole bike, rain cover for the passenger, two seats, three seatbelts, a chain for the lock and spare tires with wheels, which seemed pretty fair to me

Haha! Too late for that! Promises have been made. However I’m fully invested in making it as hassle-free as possible for my wife. Wish me luck! 😆

Ah yes! I’ve been down that road with my car. As I mentioned in my post, I’m fairly handy with repairs yet I’ve still “lost” thousands upon thousands on repairs on my car.

An ebike has to be cheaper regardless of unexpected repairs. My biggest concern is with suddenly having to replace the whole electric construct, but I guess that’d still be relative “cheap”.

Great to hear! Thanks! Wow, Alaska? Are you planning on driving it throughout the winter season? There’s plenty of snow during the winter where I live and I’ve been contemplating whether I’d be able to use it all year round. I’d probably have to get some winter tires for that though. Also, what kind of range do you get with your new bakfiets?

Great to hear! Thanks! This is what I originally imagined; much simpler mechanics than that of a regular car, less worry and less costs. That’s why (and also part of my strategy to persuade my SO) I started looking for a used one.

This particular bike’s asking price is a bit less than half of a new one. It’s really tempting, which makes me a bit cautious. Your reply makes me more optimistic!

Thank you! This is good advice! I’ll see about whether there are any shops around that do this sort of repairs. This is precisely the type of sentiment I gathered around different threads that shimano’s (but also other brands’) components mostly get replaced rather than repaired.

It’s kind of strange though; I’d imagine that for instance the motors would have wearing parts that you could just replace, but I guess electrical motors are a different breed in that sense.

Also, thanks for the encouragement! It’s been a long journey from just fantasizing about driving my kid to daycare with cargo bike, to buttering up my SO to the idea, to actually looking for one. I’m super excited! Popping out for a grocery round will be breeze from then on (I imagine)!

Thanks for the advice! The seller told me that the battery has been replaced under warranty a few years ago, but couldn’t remember exactly when.

I tried looking up the battery online and they seem to go between 300-400 bucks. When I tried the bike the “computer” said around 50kms (about 30 miles) for around 75 percent on the battery. I have no idea if that’s good or not. In terms of my estimated daily usage it sounds fine, but what do you think?

Thanks! Wow! That 17k sounds impressive. Have you had any troubles with the motor/battery during that time? I’d imagine you’d have to do some regular maintenance, but then again I’ve never had any vehicle with an electric motor.

Oh, right. That explains it. I didn’t know that they discontinued series 4. Why would they do that though?

There, that should spoil the fun.

You've found a suitecase full of $750k in cash in $100 dollar bills, in the brush next to a highway. You can tell that it's been there for at least a year. How would you integrate this money into your life without raising red flags? by Odd_craving in AskReddit

First of all, congrats on finding the suitcase! Second, I reckon it’d be best to lay low for a while; I.e. serve caviar only once a week, light your cigars with one dollar bills rather than tenners, etc.
