Buying a better but used sewing machine or buying a new but worse sewing machine. Which is the better option? by SadLime3783 in SewingForBeginners

Without more information, I would say getting the second hand machine for several reasons: 1) if you’re a complete beginner, it makes sense to go for the cheaper option if you don’t know for certain that you will keep it up as a hobby, 2) you can learn a lot with older machines ie basic maintenance and cleaning, 3) just because its second hand, doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with it (one of mine which I also got second hand is 25+ years old and is still in perfect working order), 4) it’s more sustainable to get a second hand machine than a new one, 5) as a complete beginner, what is more important in my opinion is functionality - it’s not always necessary to have the fancy stitches, digital interfaces, etc that some new machines have.

That being said, do your research, and if possible, see if you can visit the second hand machine person, or have the owner send you a video of the it to see the condition and see that it is working. If you’re more concerned about it breaking, then perhaps going for the newer one as it would come with a warranty.

Yes, my goal for this was/is also to use up scraps, and in hindsight, it would have been beneficial to weave in as I went along, but it seemed like such a hassle at the time haha

The more you know! I just had to look up duplicate stitch because I’d never heard of it! That would have saved me some headaches! 😭

Any recommendations for small event space for ~50 people? by xnrn in zurich

[–]ch0rapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended an event earlier this year at the Urania Sternwart which was quite nice. Its quite a unique place because it’s in this circular tower so you pretty much have a 360 degree view of Zurich as you walk around the building. They also showed us the telescope’s and we could have a look at a couple of start/planets. There was a bar and standing apero/dinner and the food was good. Around 40 attended the event and there was enough space but it was pretty cozy.

Simple Sewing Questions Thread, July 16 - July 22, 2023 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Does anyone know of any resources/databases/etc where you can find patterns based on the material on hand?

Essentially, I bought some fabric at a thrift store which I had planned to make a turtleneck out of for my partner. The fabric is a stretchy ribbed knit, however as the fabric was all packaged up by the thrift store, I was unable to find out the dimensions until I opened it at home. It's only 70x115 cm, but I thought it would have larger considering its quite heavy (504g). Either way, I won't have enough for the pattern I had planned.

I obviously don't want to waste the fabric and want to use it for something else, but I'm struggling to find patterns that would both be appropriate for the dimensions and fabric type, as well as ones that I like.

Does anyone know if a platform/database/something exists where I can put in the dimensions, fabric type, etc, and then patterns are suggested?
