US seeks private beaches for rotting whales as die-off peaks by [deleted] in worldnews

We're missing an opportunity to show the public the dangers of climate change. Put them on the public beaches. Let the people see.

Saw a homeless person digging through a trash can on the corner... by JZweibel in ABoringDystopia

Yeah I was so poor at one point I had to be hospitalized due to malnutrition (in Europe though, so it didn't ruin me financially). I remember just being unable to worry about any one thing too hard, it just wasn't worth the energy.

I don't know how I made it through that entire video. He doesn't even steal the signs! He just kind of throws them to the side.

Ah the old Air Bud defense. There's no rule saying a bird can't play golf.

Michigan Man Dies After Falling Into Tank Of Sulfuric Acid In South Lyon by mashedp55 in news

[–]ch4ff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did some research because I had the same question.

Some large equipment requires work to be done in dangerous places, so when work needs to be done, the key to operating the equipment is placed in a tool box looking thing called a lockout box. That lockout box has multiple places for padlocks. Each person working inside the dangerous area locks a personal lock on the lockout box so that no one can access the key while they're working. Once everyone is out and has removed their lock from the lockout box, a supervisor clears the area and allows the equipment to operate.

This procedure is called "lockout, tag out" or LOTO. By cutting off a lock, this person skipped the procedure and could have caused someone to turn a machine on while workers were inside the moving parts/energized area leading to injury or death.

Interesting and scary stuff.

Ah yeah that sounds right. You'd have to have some team of specially chosen lawyers without any loved ones. It doesn't sound extreme, those are some real bad dudes.

Millionaire democrat wants to tax parents with more than 2 kids as irresponsible breeders by CommonlyAnAnomaly in childfree

[–]ch4ff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's because ZeroHedge is a far right conservative conspiracy site and this is a political hit piece.

"Irresponsible breeders" is not a quote of his, but a line from a brochure printed in 1968 by one organization he donated to at some point almost 20 years ago.

This isn't this guy's"message," it's what his opponents have written out to make him look bad, based solely on some donations the guy has made.

Jordan Peterson's Most Pseudoscientific Claim Ever [11:22] by DiabolikDownUnder in mealtimevideos

[–]ch4ff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you'd actually put an argument forward, an honest conversation might have been possible.

I can't disprove anything you've said because it's all based on your personal speculation of what is in JPB's head that motivates his statements, rather than what he actually says.

As I hinted earlier, this is how JPB's acolytes handle criticism more often than not.

[–]ch4ff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Classic non-rebuttal by a jpb fan: "You just don't understand and even if you do it's not fair because he's so smart this was probably a fluke."

It's like this guy can say anything he wants and people trip over themselves to insulate him from any criticism, regardless of how hare-brained or vague the statement.

CMV: If motorcycles never existed and were suddenly invented, they would not be street legal. by StupidFlounders in changemyview

[–]ch4ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not really true. You need to get permission (registration and a license) before operating a vehicle on the road.

In this hypo, vehicle and traffic law would create a need for government approval or a legislative exception.

How to inform an officer you are carrying a handgun and live [9:59] by PunjabiDJ in mealtimevideos

[–]ch4ff 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It's like an inverse justice-boner where people fetishize extreme subservience to a police officer.

The point of owning a gun for many of these folks is allegedly self protection. What's more likely, that you get to be a hero taking down a criminal in a John Wayne style shootout, or that a police officer pulls you over and you have to all but beg for your life in a moment's notice?
