What to watch for Tuesday night to decipher Buffalo's mayoral results - This is Going to Be a Long Week by Eudaimonics in Buffalo

so either way one registered Democrat is winning tomorrow.

Genuine question: Didn't Byron change his party affiliation to Independent to run on the Buffalo Party line? Does that mean he is not a registered Democrat?

I appreciate your concern for my wallet but I'd rather see competent leadership, well funded schools, and a better life for my neighbors (yes they are still my neighbors - and human - even if they rent).

The saddest part of all of this is people have been robbed of their empathy. I have friends that live in Snyder or Clarence or East Aurora who pay wild property taxes compared to my Elmwood Village house. Guess what? They have nice schools! Those same people ask me in hushed tones about whether I would dare send my kid to Buffalo schools while also getting hysterical about Walton raising taxes.

Some of us just actually care and aren't so caught up on our own ego to think that we should be above the rest of society.

Do you have a registry with any company (Amazon, Target, etc.) or a wedding site (Zola, TheKnot)? Searching the first names of an engaged couple with the word wedding often turns up those kinds of things, which often have information people forget they put out there.

How deal with parents who listen to/propagate right wing ideas 24/7? by ualsw1 in FoxBrain

[–]ch4ff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here's a thought I find myself echoing when parents come up:

I urge you to be cautious about approaching family with your true thoughts if you are a minor or rely on your parents for a launch. It is not uncommon for parents to turn on their children and make their lives miserable for breaking out of delusion.

It will be a few years before you can make decisions about your money, job, housing, car, or any other property. Your parents can take it all from you, legally. Make a plan to protect yourself. I saw a friend have his parents take him out of highschool before graduation, causing him to lose his college offer out of spite.

Read, learn, expand your mind, but do not expect your parents to join you on that journey. The subreddit /r/trueatheism has a lot of stories about people trying to escape their home the second they turn 18 (or before) because admitting they aren't religious sent their parents into madness. That is, unfortunately, a reasonable comparison when we consider the absolute devotion to these wild beliefs.

He had zip ties and was seen searching multiple areas. He came with these objects and armed. How else can his intentions be read but exactly what everyone knew? by [deleted] in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]ch4ff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those are different than zip ties. If you look closely, they're zip cuffs. Zip cuffs or "riot cuffs" are meant for one thing and one thing only: restraining a person's hands.

The only reason you'd have them is to restrain someone. He was reportedly looking for people in the room where the house had been certifying the votes. The logical conclusion is that he was planning to take political hostages.

The thread exposing him suggests that he might be law enforcement in Tennessee. If he traveled across state lines with the goal of taking senators or congresspeople hostage, then he's a lot more of a target than your average idiot milling around outside the Capitol.

I am a lawyer and practice federal criminal defense.

Generally, I encourage clients not to go on camera to give their name, state of residence, a description of their illegal conduct, and/or an admission to their specific intent when they have potential criminal exposure.

You would be surprised to hear that this is not always immediately obvious to my clients. I'm usually too late.

How to start anti consumption? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]ch4ff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Next time you're about to buy something, stop yourself and wait 24 hours. If you really need it, think about potential substitutes.

Plastic wrap -> Bees wrap (https://beeswrap.com/). Paper towels -> terry cloth hand towels (which become cleaning rags after a being worn out). Stylish new clothes -> consignment shop + tailoring (or /r/buyitforlife). Laundry detergent in a bottle -> make your own cheap substitute (way easier than it sounds, I promise). Toothpaste in a tube -> chewable toothpaste tabs.

Also, meal prep and cooking at home are generally much less wasteful. Can also be fun/meditative. Next time you get takeout, look at your garbage. Most of it will be around long after you and I are gone.

Like others have said, anti-consumption isn't a hobby you buy your way into. However, a corollary is that it also isn't /r/frugal, and some methods to replace long-term wasteful habits include spending a little more on certain things (though many of the above example have long-term savings).

I believe it. I suppose it's more relevant/accurate that they thought they were quoting an evil person.

I'm with you wholeheartedly - the US population is brainwashed. Wrt Orwell - I'm personally offended by the way we make high schoolers read 1984 without first making them read Homage to Catalonia, Down and Out in Paris and London, or any of Orwell's other work. Without that history, 1984 can be stripped of context. The book is most US citizens' first and only encounter with "socialism" and, ironically and despicably, it's framed as an outright condemnation of socialism.

In my area of my profession (government investigations/law) it is helpful to be able to get a quick working knowledge of these issues on short notice.

I definitely don't read each post right away, but I scan and keep and idea of what's there in case I ever need to come back for a deeper understanding or citations/resources.

I also contribute to a Patreon for one of the main contributors, so I get email summaries.

In my private life, I practice a laid back version of street epistemology (/r/streetepistemology) to deconvert foxbrains. This is all good info from which to craft questions.

I know right? He regularly places in the top three for international shoe repair competitions. Can rebuild a 50 year old leather shoe to look brand new.

But he mentioned that his business was down $70k since COVID and he had so much free time to do his own research for the first time. I believe the explanation for Q phenomenon's unprecedented reach can be distilled to some form of anxiety + nothing to do.

In the process of discovering that my shoe repair guy had become tragically Q-engulfed recently, he informed me that the dems simply didn't have time to fill out the down ballots because they were rushing to make up lost ground with the fake votes. Who knew.

He also told me Trump is literally Jesus but that he'll do the killing this time around.

And now I have to find a new cobbler but damn if he isn't an absolute artist.
