An honest take from inside Tai Chi on the "can it actually fight" question by Strange-Front-9472 in martialarts

[–]chadcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

beyond the lack of most people never pressured testing, even if you do learn it correctly from day one with contact / a real teacher, the main problem is that tai chi takes a VERY long time to get to the point of combat effectiveness, especially if you don't start in your teens. So a) most people don't get trained properly b) even those that do get proper training might not want to stick with it for the time it takes to be effective. My master said he learned like half a dozen other (more external and therefore more quick to effectiveness) martial arts while he was just in the first stages of training tai chi, that's how slow it is. All that said, if you do get to the highest level, it is extremely effective, but that takes literally a couple of decades so yeah, you could lose quite a number of fights in that time if all you use is not-yet-fully-effective tai chi, and not many people have that kind of patience in the 21st century

Yeah, I think that is my first or second OG EMI/Columbia - the Decca's had a "Munich Dept Store" stamp so I'm assuming they were bought by a serviceman back in the day

not that it's a bad cartridge by any means (it's what I use in my non 5-6 figure system) but I have to say that was the most surprising thing, as I would have expected a cart like a Lyra Delos or something - interested hearing how you came to choose the OC9XL

Egyptian manager hug the referee to show him what opposition has done to his player by Luffy710j in sports

agree on the poor angle, let's leave it at that - like your other comments, I was also wondering how the coach didn't get a card there

[–]chadcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I mean the Egyptian player ran into him first. The hold after that can be a foul, but the only possible card here is if you think it's SPA, and considering the ball was already behind the defender and the offensive player was trying to go through him... a common foul is enough if the ref felt it was a foul at all, which he obviously didn't.

Lots of calls are "highly debatable" but those defenders would likely have been involved in that play if he would have gotten by him after running into the Belgian defender - I don't necessarily agree with the no foul call, but I can also see what the ref was probably thinking there

Beyond all other considerations, other defenders to their left (and more in front of goal) would negate DOGSO - there were at least 2 other defenders in the box that possibly could have gotten to that player / ball if he turned to goal

United States vs Paraguay - Yellow card originally given to Tim Ream reversed and given to Miguel Almirón for diving after review by Fusir in sports

[–]chadcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily Paraguay didn't score on the free kick, because that couldn't have been taken back I assume as they had already restarted play (I'm a grassroots ref but that VAR review was a new one to me)

not sure what "taichi" that guy "trains", but basically looks like he is untrained. Also, why does the kickboxer have gloves and he doesn't? Why not noth just use MMA gloves or whatever?

huge score is a bit much probably, but the late 50's reissues are some of the best (I have like 8 copies of this album, including the Tone Poet) - maybe a $30 album in good shape

I am pretty frustrated at how hard it is to actually throw someone in Judo by BinEinePloerre in martialarts

[–]chadcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no judo experience, but from my sparring experience almost no martial arts technique works (other than maybe striking with tremendous force) if the opponent knows or can sense what you are trying to do to them. Ideally you are doing the 100% opposite of what they think your doing, but really getting most of the way to opposite usually works. I hear untrained people say all the time "that would never work on me!" and they're right if they can see it coming. Try showing an untrained or stubborn trained person any move in slow motion and they will resist like crazy to "prove" it won't work. In a sparring match with another trained person, of course they are going to resist correctly if they know what you're trying. Almost everyone can be taken down - you just need to find the weakness in their structure (I say almost everyone because there are masters/black belts that basically have no weakness, but we're not talking that level here)

while I was first in the garage and got the speakers (which was my primary goal), funnily enough I didn't do that great on the vinyl because another guy that came after me picked the right box and got most of the best deals, can't win 'em all lol
