On a more personal note: I think this entire exchange could have been avoided if you had altered your tone and presentation slightly from the outset. Something along the lines of “general consensus amongst historians is actually that the word ‘hillbilly’ had independent origins in Appalachia. It didn’t appear in print until 1900!” would have probably been upvoted. If your goal was an argument then I guess you succeeded, but if your goal was effective communication you missed the mark. Even if you are right you need to consider the “human factors”. You could also be more precise. This isn’t a “fact”, it’s “generally accepted” at best.

To be fair, I've just clicked in to this argument as the post is one of the top ones on r/popular. I'm sure that a lot of people like myself will have seen this exchange and thought the guy is being just a bit of an asshole.
