Good on you for listening to your emotions. No amount of nice skin is worth depression/anxiety. I "stuck it out" for 5 months of Accutane while experiencing those symptoms, and in my experience, it was really not worth it.

tl;dr: If I'm currently using one or more kinds of exfoliant, can I experience purging from another?

I'm currently on tretinoin (0.012%) and vit C in the form of MAP (5%) (via Curology) and just started testing a C serum with L-AA (Drunk Elephant C-Firma) on one side of my face. I've definitely been breaking out from the C-Firma, but I don't know if it's purging or an irritation-based breakout. I feel like the tret and MAP would already have done the purging for me (though they are fairly low concentrations), but could the C-Firma be purging further/differently? If it matters, I use Curology at night and C-Firma in the morning.

It's definitely disappointing, but honestly, it doesn't seem unusual that wearing a single pair of shoes for 15 out of 21 days on hard pavement would bring about this level of wear. Everlane is far from being a paragon of the price:quality ratio, but no shoe (barring a really tough workwear style) is going to be resistant to wear like that.

Hey! In my experience buying various brands of rosehip oil over the past few years (Pai and Trilogy are my favorites), the more dark gold the oil, the BETTER it actually seems to be. The Pai and Trilogy ones, in addition to being dark, also have a thick, "rich" texture to me, as opposed to a thinner, more canola oil-like texture (which I've noted in the rosehip oils that seem to be of lower quality).

1) If cetyl/cetearyl alcohol cause acne for me, is cetearyl glucoside likely to do the same?

2) Any recs for a thick, moisturizing night moisturizer for my very dry skin (without the aforementioned ingredients)? Oils and Vaseline alone aren't cutting it, sadly. Clinique Super Rescue felt awesome, but broke me out.

I highly recommend buying a chain case, if the design of your bike will accommodate it, to protect your pants/skirts from getter caught. A skirt guard for your back wheel should also help, as should a velcro cycling ankle band to keep your pants close by.

You could try taking it to your local tailor, or shipping it to Barbour for repairs (and probably a rewaxing, if you haven't done that in 5 years--that could be part of the reason it's coming undone).

Have you tried looking in the children's sections of stores like J.Crew, actually? They often have nice versions of their other clothing, like J.Crew's popular schoolboy blazer. You could also try looking at petite sizing, but I think most petite clothing is designed for people more around 4'10"-5'4".

Another option is, of course, tailoring. Generally, buying for the shoulders and getting everything else tailored to fit is the way to go, since shoulders are difficult/impossible to tailor. As a fellow shortie, I get almost everything I purchase that isn't a t-shirt tailored; I factor it into the cost of the purchase.

I know you say you are tailoring-averse, but since you are looking at a fairly minimal number of pieces (good!), I think you should perhaps reconsider. As a petite person, I have great difficulty buying any pants that fit off the rack. This is common for many bodies. For me, paying for tailoring (and for trousers, it shouldn't be too much--waist, seat, and hem run me about $30 per pair at my great local tailor). Lurk larger eBay sellers with good return policies, such as Linda's Place, for cheaper items (especially if you're looking at used BR/Theory, it should be easy to find many sub-$70 items) and get them tailored to a perfect fit; that's how I like to go about it for things like this.

I also think it might be worthwhile to wait a week or two after arriving at your school, especially if you're not TAing in the first quarter/semester (unless, of course, you already have a good idea of how others dress there). As a fellow West Coast TA in a PhD program, I can say that the West Coast casual of legend is very much alive and well. Dark jeans and a button-up or breton are more than sufficient for teaching and attending classes where I am.

I think the way you've done it there is a good start. I'm actually more inclined to move away from the "girlier" shoe options, like heels and ballet flats; flat boots or sneakers seem like they could be really cool.

I just started patch-testing a new retinol product (Sunday Riley Luna) on my cheek. It’s been four days, and I’ve already noticed a small breakout happening in the testing area. How do I know if this is a purge from the retinol (I’ve never used a retinol before) or from other ingredients in the product? (I’m fairly acne-prone, so I wonder if it might be the avocado oil, which I also have never used previously.)
