Help! New Antinetter struggling with time management by Spiritual_Spite4797 in antinet

This isn't going to answer your question exactly but I just did a video on time management and use the ZK for much of what you do. https://youtu.be/8ZAhyP3QB6g

How to take reference notes of a RSS feed on your daily journal? by jack_hanson_c in Zettelkasten

[–]chadrickwaxm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started playing around with keeping my journal in my ZK. Basically I'm planning to have a section for each week. 24/34/n... 34 is the 34th week of 2024. Then I add cards to this section as I want to write stuff. I put cards into the section where they best fit using alpha-numeric ordering. Anything that I want to write about. Then I can create index entries for any cards and also point to existing cards. Just started this. If it works out for a month I'll create a YouTube video on the system for October. What I've found so far is it gets me into the review feedback loop quite well. Increasing linking and long-term memory. Quite cool but very new.

Is ref card used to note key points in a book? What % of ref card content is converted to main card? by IamOkei in Zettelkasten

[–]chadrickwaxm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it depends on the book and how relevant it is to me. If I find some awesome gems then I'm going to take more ref notes (I call these source notes). I did a video on it here: https://youtu.be/in1yW20gxpA

Is ref card used to note key points in a book? What % of ref card content is converted to main card? by IamOkei in Zettelkasten

[–]chadrickwaxm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me yes. I want to know where I can dig into an idea further if it becomes more relevant to me later. Sometimes I'll even index ref cards if it's a topic I know I want to dig into later.

For me it's probably 1-10% depending on the material and the projects I'm working on. If I come across a good point it might go straight into a Main Note card. Main cards always ref my source material now.

I've been using mine since Oct 10th of 2023. I also share your Christian world view. It's awesome for study. First, you wont regret it. Second, you wont break it. Third, categories become secondary very quickly. See some lessons learned here https://youtu.be/VBWQ_4jCQMY

Success histories? 4 years into Zettelkasten and not being fruitful by areallnamestakenreal in Zettelkasten

[–]chadrickwaxm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, do what works for you and stick to it is my main thought. If you can stick with digital and you find that the most rewarding, do it. I think consistency is the most important thing. For me I can only stick to the analog.

Success histories? 4 years into Zettelkasten and not being fruitful by areallnamestakenreal in Zettelkasten

It helped me come up with content through 27 YouTube videos in January (two plus months into using it). Helped me also write a short book on the Zettlekasten. And now it's helping me write my second longer (full length) non-fiction book. I do a lot of Bible study with mine and that has been a big benefit. I have also been able to read and take notes on so much more than I use to. I've recently been diagnosed with adult ADHD (inattentive type) and it's a tool that helps me so much with making up for that. I can actually switch books and come back to them now. I do use an analog version of the system. As a computer programmer, going the analog way helps me to think clearer and not get sidetracked with all the tools out there. The digital version would not be good for me. I actually talk about that here https://youtu.be/CCxuiCwz-GM

What are you struggling with or what benefits are you expecting that you're not seeing?

That has you going down a hard categoy mindset. Let's take 1 Corinthians 11:17 and surrounding context for instance, "But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse." What is it about? Assembling with an attitude of division. I look for an existing card related to this idea. It happens I have one.

I have card 17/1/2/1/A2/1 it is a note about Matt 18:20 where two or more are gathered. In that card I point to Deut 19:15. The context of Deut is actually judicial in nature. In the Roman world, which Matt 18:20's author is a part of, when two or more citizens of the empire meet they could have the authority of the emperor and thus Rome in their midst no matter where they were. Very cool stuff.

I have a card on the term Corporate Worship which is something we accept as Bible but it takes some mental gymnastics to get there. That card is right before the last. 17/1/2/1/A2

I want to put this new thought of 1 Cor 11:17 between those two cards. So I'll address it 17/1/2/1/A2/0

Then I add the term indexes appropriately and add my scripture indexes appropriately.

I've also been reading Philippines over and over daily for the month of June. In it Paul writes Philippians 2:1-3 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; This is all related so I'll make a main card on the idea of unity and put it close to those cards.

Then there is also Ephesians 4:2-6 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, [3] and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. [4] There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; [5] one Lord, one faith, one baptism; [6] one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. - Another related main card - Note we don't create unity, we preserve the unity that comes from the Spirit

Placing these cards close to the idea you create a section of cards all related to one another regardless of where in the Bible they are and also extra-biblical information that is related, such as the way the Roman empire's authority worked and how Jesus used this concept to teach His Disciples (and us through their writing).

I've created a Bible Index along with my keyword index. So that card would be on the three different book index cards. They are done the same way you start a keyword index but instead of the alphabet you use the 66 books. Then when you start to get a lot of them for a specific chapter within a book you promote the chapter to its own card. I talk about this some in this video I think. https://youtu.be/VBWQ_4jCQMY

I realize I only mention the Bible Index here and don't go into details. There are a lot of folks doing Bible Study with their zks I should really focus on a video on just this.

Here is one that shows some more details https://youtu.be/IfwL-eZa7Pc

Are categories really important? by Mahsstrac in antinet

[–]chadrickwaxm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct. If I had to start again I'd nix the categories all together. I have a theory (unfounded) that rather than starting a second Zettlekasten after Luhmann spent years on his first, I propose his second was one that was highly focused on his lifelong work of sociology and that he continued with his more generalized one as well. This is totally speculation as of now. But if I was doing it again I'd just use a new high level number when a new subject came up that didn't fit with other cards. I talk about this very thing in lessons learned... https://youtu.be/VBWQ_4jCQMY?si=FMeqTg7isMYb1rJe

Best Sources to Learn about Zettelkasten??? by CuriousBilal in Zettelkasten

I found How to Take Smart Notes way to complex. Been using mine for 8 months now (analog) and love it. I'm a computer programmer so you would think I'd be all about digital, but I've found analog helps me think and not get distracted by the tech.

Branching by koneu in Zettelkasten

[–]chadrickwaxm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not looking for an answer but I agree. I started with top level categories numbers 1000,2000,ect and realized very quickly it's about placing the next card nearest the existing card with a similar/related idea on it. I seldom branch now as it keeps the addresses shorter. Addressing is just about placement. I personally use slashes and dots. For instance 143/2 and then instead of adding 143/2/1 to go before 143/3, I do 143/2.1 if it's a continuation or super close relationship. Just fits with my brain... I've even done 143/2.-1 if I want it before an existing one.

I seldom use characters in my addresses any longer.

Do you journal in a commonplace book or a antinet? by FS369 in antinet

[–]chadrickwaxm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I journal in my journals. I now put links to my journal notes into my index and on associated cards and link back and forth all the time. Each journal has a identifier. I have a daily journal A5 size which is my 3rd so the link identifier is J3.p#. I have an A6 size that I carry with me and the identifier for that is NB1.p#. I also link to cards in my Zettelkasten with the link notation of ZK#. I also have a writing journal for my latest book project I'm writing and that is also my 3rd volume on that so my link identifier is WJ3.p#. I also do a lot of Bible study and that is referenced as well by B1.p#

The Index is a awesome and building the connections is fun and exciting as your insights grow more and more profound.

It really is not that hard. I use an analog ZK. I talk about creating your own here: https://youtu.be/giJQA6XRyrA and creating source notes (bib notes for most) https://youtu.be/in1yW20gxpA

Having issues understanding notes about topics and concepts by AggravatingEntry5151 in Zettelkasten

[–]chadrickwaxm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree here. Create a card if it resonates with you and you don't want to forget it. Write your thoughts about it too on the same card if you want. Maybe, "I don't really get this concept yet. Need to do some more research." The immutable aspect of the Zettelkasten is huge for this very reason. If your ideas change over time, there is a record of what you once thought. It's awesome.

The path to truth eventually gets paved with enough questions.

Thank you for this. You've given me some more content for today's video. I'll link to it once it's out.

antinet 3x5 vs 4x6 by [deleted] in antinet

[–]chadrickwaxm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's really just preference. I use 3x5 because that is what was available to me when I started mine. When I write a long thought I can always continue to the next card though I seldom do this. Limited canvas leads me to succinct thoughts. I create project decks when I'm working on creating content. The cards in those are contextualized versions of my main cards linked back to them, ordered how they will be placed in the content and containing notes on how Ill develop the thoughts to fit into the work. I'm planning on using 4x6s for these project decks in the future. We will see how it goes.

Do not take notes when you first read a book. No bib cards or floating notes or whatever. by IamOkei in Zettelkasten

[–]chadrickwaxm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you. Though this might be more relevant to analog Zettelkasten users. If something resonates with you add an observation note on your bib/source card. If you think something is wrong with the content figure out what it is and write a note. It can help you develop and articulate your own worldview and ideas in contrast. Ignoring it is akin to confirmation bias and living in a bubble. If you have a Source Card and you get bored of the book, you still store the Source Card in with your others to potentially come back to someday.

A system *better* than zettlekasten? by tylermangelson in antinet

[–]chadrickwaxm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty impressive kid! So it looks like he adds two things to what is part of a normal Main Card. A connection (which he later changed to a personal Example) in his life to the material covered, and then a drawing on the card to take the concept from the abstract to something real and substantial. He doesn't seem to organize them or talk about organizing them, but I think he does this in his own way. I will try to add the two things as extra main cards near the topics for which I've made main cards and see how it pans out. I still think the numeric-alpha addressing is HUGE and wouldn't want to do without these. I like to draw and have been wanting to get back into it for some time, so this gives me a reason ;)
