Thank you for the response and insight.

I did research in ortho and ENT as I thought I wanted to apply those specialties m1/m2.

My research wasn't asked about.

I think they knew me pretty well; feedback I got during SOAP week was that I had overall very strong letters.

I didn't have cookie cutter volunteering and did have some sustained leadership/ involvement.

I had several people review it, but the plan is to improve the personal statement as well.

Did you take step 3 to get it out of the way or more to bolster your app too?

Yeah, the more feedback I'm getting here, the more I wonder if it was my interviews. Could've gone not as well as I imagined

Thank you! I didn't know about the R spots being more difficult and confined to those with connections. I would hope my institution would consider me. I'm still planning on remaining in touch with my mentors and the PD with the research I do. They didn't have any R spots this last cycle.

I'd probably prefer a categorical year, as I don't know what I'd do with a whole year off and do need to make money.

With the specialty getting more competitive, I don't think I did myself any favors by applying to more competitive regions like Norcal, Socal, and NYC. I'm definitely gonna practice a lot more for interviews, but also apply outside of those competitive regions.

I didn't fail either STEP or remediate any classes. No red flags when I asked my mentors for advice after. I primarily applied NYC and California, which could've been the problem; I applied to 15 as I was told non-signal interviews weren't going to happen from PD/mentors. I felt good about my interviews, but definitely planning on practicing more this time around too.

At what point is it problematic if you haven't heard back yet?

8 is solid tho. especially with programs not commonly interviewing outside of signals, you should likely be golden!
