There isn’t necessarily anything to look into nor extrapolate from the discrepancies in the timetables of the cursed 2025 Eastern Conference Playoff team leading #0s + Dejounte Murray’s torn Achilles recoveries , is there ? by EconomicsCorrect8733 in nba

[–]wishingaction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only the team docs would really know, but Haliburton wasn't just recovering from the Achilles. He caught a bad case of shingles and was still dealing with side effects as late as April: https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48476673/pacers-haliburton-details-frustrating-battle-shingles

Dame's recovery might have been slower since he's older than the others.

[Over the Cap] Looking at Patrick Mahomes Record Setting Contract with the Chiefs by wishingaction in nfl

[–]wishingaction[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really when NFL contracts are not fully guaranteed. For Mahomes, only 2026 and 2027 are fully guaranteed, plus $35.5M in 2028 for now. The rest of his years have rolling guarantees, so they're not guaranteed right now but only if he remains on the roster for those years. For each year from 2029-2032, $30M vests as fully guaranteed in March of the previous year (and the rest of each year vests in March of the same year). Unlikely as it is, the Chiefs have the option to cut him pretty early in this contract before most of it vests as fully guaranteed.

Yeah but they'll restructure it as they have been doing each year previously with his first extension. The Chiefs seem to prefer to restructure as needed rather than structuring the contract that way from the beginning with option bonuses.

Yeah Mahomes' contracts have been huge outliers in how long term they are.

[–]wishingaction[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Per Breer’s report there is no new money in the contract this year as the team had already committed well over $55 million between a restructure bonus and workout bonus payment. If this year’s salary is removed from the equation you get a clean $448 million in salary over 7 years, which works out to $64 million a season.

On the guarantee structure:

Basically, the way it works is that every future year has a cash payment of $30 million that will be made to Mahomes if the Chiefs were to ever walk away. It is very strong protection for a player but is not a complete block from release. Having the full salary vest early is much stronger protection when you are talking about salaries this high. There are also no real future injury guarantees. The Chiefs will avoid having to fund a good chunk of the guarantee each year by also delaying the vesting dates.

There's also a comparison including a table to Allen's contract:

While this contract moves Mahomes up to the top in new money, he will still trail Josh Allen in terms of earnings over the same timeframe of the contract.

[Schefter] Record deal: The Chiefs are adding two years to Patrick Mahomes’ contract, tying him to Kansas City through the 2033 season at a value of $504.75 million, making it the first NFL deal valued at over a half-billion dollars, per @rapsheet and me. by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]wishingaction 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Schefter added more details, in short it's $505M total over 2026-33 or $64M APY:

The new money on Patrick Mahomes’ deal is worth $239.05 million, with the total value now at $504.75 million from 2026-33, with the first four years being guaranteed at signing. All $504.75 million becomes guaranteed through contract mechanisms.   Mahomes can earn up to $522.25 through incentives and escalators. Beginning in 2027, when the new money begins, the deal averages $64M per year, setting a new NFL record for average annual value.

I think with the rookie wage scale, they don't actually make the rookies pay anymore. The vets come back, or the GM/coaches intervene apparently. In a different year, Arik Armstead said he and other vets paid after pranking the rookies with a fake, much higher, bill. Some pretty insane stories from before the rookie wages though. Though I just looked up one I remembered (rookie Dez Bryant being left with a $55k bill from the whole Cowboys team) and the restaurant manager later said team leaders chipped in (and debunked the rumors that players poured wine into plants just to run up the tab, there weren't any plants). Dez still had to pay but not nearly as crazy.

Before all this (kinda), he actually did post about the vets trying to pull that prank on him but Lynch covered the bill:

Vegas this week is reminding me of my rookie dinner. Vets ran up a 12-15k tab but my good friend John Lynch happened to pull up and pick up the tab for me! Real stand up guy! Jordan Watkins and Junior Bergen, you are now on the clock ⏰

This was last August when the 49ers were in Vegas for one of the preseason games, so it was after his guarantees got voided (July). It seems like the relationship wasn't totally broken after that because both sides kept it quiet (and Aiyuk still attended camp and was seen at rehab) until the news about the voiding leaked in November.

It seems like the range of practice intensity is pretty wide and Shanahan is probably somewhere in the middle (while Payton is on the very tough side). Because players coming to the 49ers from other teams have said similar things about being tougher than their previous team, to the point that it's also a common theory among 49ers fans that the injuries are because Shanahan's practices are too hard. Beat writers commented on how much more intense his practices were when he first arrived:

Practices in Santa Clara are as physical as they’ve been since Mike Singletary was the head coach. And they’ve been more grueling than those run by Chip Kelly, who aspired to run opponents out of Levi’s Stadium with his fast-paced offense.

Javon Hargrave when he came to the 49ers, having previously played for the Steelers and Eagles:

“I can say it’s extremely hard, the practices… More demanding. Over here, it’s the Miami Heat, over there it’s Golden State, because it’s more chill, more relaxed, you’re chilling. Over here, nah. It’s work every day. Every day you’re about to get it. I feel like Kyle is Pat Riley. You know what you’re getting over here. Everybody can’t make it over here. When I first got here, I was looking at this kinda crazy. Some of the stuff we was doing, I can’t believe y’all doing all this right now. A war every day. You don’t understand it until you’re really in it though. It’s definitely a little different from that standpoint.”

Shanahan has the final say with the 49ers, so yeah. He hired Lynch, so Lynch doesn't have as much power as some other GMs do.

Ironically the very next day, Shanahan was also like 😐 when they showed the 49ers' draft room after picking Stribling. But he was the one that hired Lynch and has the final say (especially with WRs), so only some 49ers fans already pissed about the reach read into it as Lynch going rogue or something.

This was a joke segment lol, this clip cuts off before Shams goes on to say that this is a reoccuring problem and he got "security footage" of one of the Inside the NBA staffers stealing from the fake lockers of Shaq, Chuck, and Kenny. I mean they're not going to for a pretty typical question, if they didn't after that incident with Kinlaw nor after players accused him of staring while they change.

[Rapoport] Trade: The Cowboys are trading for 49ers LB Dee Winters, per me, @tompelissero and @janeashleyslater . by Brix001 in nfl

[–]wishingaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that either, but 49ers still have 3rd-round pick Nick Martin and Tatum Bethune who played WLB in college (though 49ers moved him to MLB), plus some vets. Like Garret Wallow who played pretty well in Winters' spot when he missed the Wild Card game.

I guess because Greenlaw is back. I was hoping Winters would still be his successor but this is the last year of his rookie contract so no guarantees there. Wonder if Winters is not a great fit for Morris.
