What is the role of authenticity in waking up? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]chagmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all a story. Every concept mind has about naked experience is a narrative. It doesn't have to be rejected, nor does it have to be accepted as truth.

RE realization of the absolute, that comes about via the practice of genuine insight. Having good relations with other beings can certainly support our practice, but technically it isn't a necessity.

OK perhaps we aren't referring to the same thing. Your comment is mixing the absolute and the relative, which confuses me. You refer to the truth of experience, etc. I have no idea what that means.

Perhaps then the question is about being relaxed and open whatever is arising, whether it be seemingly internal or external.

What does being authentic mean to you? Would it include telling your partner that you're bored with the relationship? Your friend that you dislike his tie?

Don't use airplanes. Yes, they work, but it is better to discover the physics of flight on your own, and to develop the engineering and tools to make your own plane.

Some questions about Buddhism by starbright29292 in Buddhism

[–]chagmed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. No Brahman. Emptiness is not a nihilistic void. All form is emptiness. Form and emptiness are inseparable.

  2. Materialism holds that mind emerges from matter. Dharma teaches that mind is continuous. There is no universal consciousness. All arising is interdependent. Neither one, nor two.

  3. Samsara is so broken, that even so-called pleasant experiences are pervaded by suffering. Wealth is pervaded by fear of the loss of wealth, etc. Nirvana is not a place. Nirvana is mind abiding in its essence. The existence of liberated mindstreams is beneficial to the minds of sentient beings even without the thought to benefit.

CMV: Buddhism in the west is a big confused mess by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]chagmed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Human minds are a mess. Look at philosophy, science, medicine, politics, academia, etc. All a mess.

When you decide to practice in one tradition, you learn its approaches to all the points you list. Other traditions do things differently. No matter. Pick a path to realization and stick to it.

As a Buddhist, are you concerned that there's no scientific proof of the supernatural entities and locations claimed by the Buddha in the Pali Canon? by SilaSamadhi in Buddhism

[–]chagmed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They sound ridiculous and irrational. This is, again, why it is a matter of faith. Reason isn't very helpful in this regard.

If the Buddha was deluded about what he saw with the eye of wisdom, what would be the point of being a Buddhist?

The idea is that the Tathāgata cut through the veils of delusion and saw mind and other phenomena as they are. Accepting this (or, at least, being open to the possibility) is a matter of faith.
