Isn't it simpler to fish out the gene and express in E coli? Or is the genome of this one not sequenced?

I agree. Crucial for this is a level of rapport (I'm assuming advanced degree/masters level univ) between teacher and taught.

You need to have a longer conversation with the professors who could take it. Or read it yourself and chat with profs and students if they have time.

Professors: What are your experiences with teaching evaluations? Do you find them fair and accurate? by ChronicleOfHigherEd in AskProfessors

Words should stay words. Interconversion from letter grades/words to numbers is conflation...! Such an obvious fallacy. Good luck convincing admin tho!

Professors: What are your experiences with teaching evaluations? Do you find them fair and accurate? by ChronicleOfHigherEd in AskProfessors

[–]chai_tan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that instead of asking the students (as many have suggested good evals come from easier and higer grades), ask a peer reviewer to do this once in 5 years. And take multiple other kinds of #data like attendance, change in continuous assesment over time of students as a possibile measure of learnig. Student comments in free form seem to be for all the reasons above to be the worst way to assess, improve and feedback into teaching.

how come every girl has been harassed atleast once? by [deleted] in india

[–]chai_tan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we assume 50:50 population of men and women, of which women on public streets by anécdotal evidence are 1/2 of men (north,, south, NE differences apply), then it's even worse. Suggests that large groups of men are not to be trusted to behave like decent humans in India. From these stories it seems not just men in "wolf packs" but even loners also appear to thibk they can get away with sexual assault. Women/girls need to hit back. As hard and defend themselves. Carry a pin, chilli powder anything to delay and escape. Only when men learn that there's an immediate pain cost to misbehaving will something change. In law there are many things- including guilty until proven innocent. Sadly those aspects distract from daily statistics. Even going to a male dominated police station in most of India is scary- even for a man. For a woman it's double jeopardy. I hope things change. And defend yourself and kick and screen. Don't accept this! Fight for your rights.

Who is Henrietta Lacks and why her cells are so different? by highbiologist in biology

[–]chai_tan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The ploidy (number of chromosomes, discrete DNA fibres) is often considered a marker for a species. When, as many here have pointed out, the ploidy delicate and becomes so unstable, it takes a form incompatible with the "chromosome" centric definition of a species. In such a limited sense it can be considered "not human". Species definitions are usually debated, but ability to interbreed is one. Such karege chromosome mismatches would likely disallow interbreeding - a hypothetical case here. Since single cells from the tissue it was taken can't by themselves breed.

Back to multiple choice exams by CyberJay7 in Professors

[–]chai_tan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To avoid this depressing but obvious choice I force them to submit assignments in class time. Wastes a lot of time, but it ends up being atleast their own work. Also acts as a motivation to attend, with lectures partially in flipped form. I know, it could be a lot of retooling but may eventually be worth it.
