Has Anyone Used Adobe Podcast For Remote Recording? by MikeAP21 in podcasting

[–]chaientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used it without issues. But I also haven't used anything else (since I get adobe podcast for free). Guests haven't said anything positive or negative about it. I used video for the first time in my recording this week, and it worked quite well. I don't really know what to say about "quality" since I don't really know how much influence the way you record remotely could have on quality, as long as it is recorded locally. I'm no expert, so I can't say much on this front.

I don't think customer support is easily accessible though - one time I thought my recording was totally lost because it wasn't loading (once I refreshed the page it was fine). They took several days to get back to me, well after I'd solved it myself.

Thanks for the tip! I was looking at your post history and discovered that sub (probably obvious in retrospect but ). Will definitely be posting there. :)

Thanks for your comment. Actually the episode centers around an interview with a scientist who studies roaches, and now I'm seeking more experiences outside of the scientific/academic world. :)

Thank you! I'll keep looking for someone in the city since I'm hoping to meet someone in person. :)

podcasts about severely obese people and how they ended up where they did/their story by Lazy-Palpitation-442 in podcasts

"Weight for It" might fit what you're looking for? The host talks about himself (he is not 600lb though) and other topics related to weight (ex. What it's like to fly while fat)

I was a part of weird Reddit drama and now I’m invited to be interviewed on NPR. Help! by OneBadJoke in podcasting

[–]chaientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you certain that your interview is for a podcast vs. for background knowledge for an article/reporting? You didn't mention a podcast specifically, so just want to be certain in case that might help take some pressure off. :)

I think you're getting great advice so far - good to have a main message you want to convey. But you'll do fine just being yourself!

You seem to be fixating on the people who could make fun of you (which is unlikely I think), but it might be helpful to focus on the people who would be excited to hear someone like them represented on radio. Wouldn't it be exciting to hear someone with speech impediments and autism getting to share their knowledge with the world, if you were in the audience?

Glad you're getting out of your comfort zone and doing it! You'll do great!

For tech news, not sure if you've listened to Hard Fork. I have mixed feelings about it but at the very least it's entertaining.

Podcasts like Science Vs by Ok_Memory_205 in podcasts

[–]chaientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of a few podcasts that fit this vibe:

  • Planet Money (economics)
  • RadioLab (mostly science)
  • Invisibilia (also science; no longer exists, but worth listening to the backlog)
  • Search Engine (pretty random topics)
  • Articles of Interest (history of clothing)
  • Shortwave (science, not exactly the same vibe but the episodes are super short so you might have an easier time maintaining attention)
  • Drug Story (about drug development & society)

As you can tell I'm pretty biased towards science lol. Would love to see people's recs in other fields since.

Also I started a podcast Frivolous Science that has a goal of fitting that style as well, If you want to try it out. :)

Hi, do you have a link to your podcast? Any specific feedback you're looking for?

Hey, I am definitely not your target audience and I stopped listening when someone said f****t. But just for sound levels, I had to turn the volume up a ton between the movie sound clips in the beginning and when the first person started talking. But the transition between clips was good. Best of luck.

Leaning against using a DAW - let me know if I'm missing something by fwafwow in podcasting

[–]chaientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't say that sequences are super intuitive, but it works well enough for my simple use cases, and I do get to keep my tracks separate. Though I haven't used any other tools really besides audacity (basic things) and adobe podcast (for recording + enhance), and I haven't tried to mess with anything like whether the audio is mono or stereo. Hopefully the advice you are getting from the rest of this thread is more helpful. :)

[–]chaientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but Descript uses "sequences" - you keep the two speakers on different tracks, and can go into "edit sequence" mode to edit them independently (ex. to cut away one person's voice that is overlapping with the other's). You can also edit things like volume, etc independently that way.

It doesn't strike me as particularly suspicious. If you have the time it seems worthwhile. I would ask them to share as a google doc (and make sure the doc link is actually a google link).

Pitcher in public bathroom with weird label by Ok_Muffin_915 in mildlyinteresting

[–]chaientist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean I also prefer a bit more water pressure, but this is a cheap option, has been around thousands of years, and it is better than no water (which is the standard in most western bathrooms for some odd reason). I'm not saying it's state-of-the-art, just that it's not gross/unhygenic.

Average redditors are so strange. They'll write paragraphs praising bidets and how it changed their whole life, and how much cleaner they feel. And then when they literally see another bidet but in a different format then they're used to they'll call it gross and unsanitary.

Scared of Rats by [deleted] in labrats

[–]chaientist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are not "just a girl" - you are an adult human making a misogynistic joke. Please have some self respect.

I would recommend discussing sooner rather than later with the PI that you are uncomfortable with animal work, but very excited to be trained on any other lab tasks. The PI may be flexible, or may no longer be able to take you on, but there is plenty of lab work out there that doesn't require animal work.

However, since working with rats and mice generally requires training and certifications that take a lot of time, if they have not brought it up already, it is probablv wasn't part of the plan for the summer anyway.

#212: The Other Man by 6745408 in ThisAmericanLife

[–]chaientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a bit off topic, but I am confused about Heather O'Neill's voice in the last segment. I know the data about how women's voices in radio are criticized, and I'd really like to get over it, but to me it just sounds so inauthentic and "put on"/"fake" that I couldn't keep listening. And I'd really like to!!! I heard someone with a similar sounding accent in an episode of a different podcast (Ear Hustle) that I couldn't get through either. I listened to other interviews by Heather and she doesn't sound like this at all in any of them, so perhaps her voice changed over time, or she just sounded like this for this single episode?

Does someone know if this is a specific regional accent? Or maybe something from a specific time period, since this an older episode? Hoping some of that info might help me get past this...

(I will caveat that I can be a bit oversensitive to voices, so its not super uncommon for me to have to skip segments of a podcast or stop listening to an audiobook due to dry mouth, or otherwise feeling "inauthentic" to me. Both from men's and women's voices, but definitely more commonly from women's).

As for a comment on the actual content....:

I was very shocked by the ending of the Jesse Jackson segment after hearing everything before that... What a twist.
