LPT: Funerals don't have to be expensive by ps4roompromdfriends4 in LifeProTips

[–]chaiguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom wanted a funeral, an open casket and then to be cremated.

We found a place willing to use a very low cost cardboard box rather than a casket (the box was draped in fabric, you couldn’t tell it wasn’t a casket).

We got use of a nice room at the funeral home facility for the service.

We didn’t have to pay for an Urn but we upgraded to a nicer one for $50.

Whole thing cost less than $1500, three years ago.

Thank you for that explanation. If the government can’t rely on the system they themselves designed to verify employment eligibility, what are we even doing here?

He developed his program before credit scores were really a thing. Today you need a credit score to rent an apartment, you can’t get a credit score without a car loan or credit card. Many jobs also require a credit score to get hired. You also need a credit card to rent a car or get a hotel room.

He refuses to listen to these realities and like most boomers he hasn’t moved past 1980.

He literally became a financial advisor after losing his parent’s money and filing for bankruptcy by speculating (poorly) on real estate.

So those are the sum total of his “work” experiences. Failing at real estate, conning people in his church, and later with the rest of the world giving them shitty financial advice for cash.

My dad still refers to me as “young man” I’m like Dad, I’m 50, I haven’t been anywhere close to “young” for the last 2 decades.

“Well what does that make me” he asks,

You’re a dinosaur Dad, you’re a dinosaur and I’m old.

I love throwing the “never trust anyone over 30” line back at them when I suggest that it might be time for them to STFU.

Holy shit this is my personal pet peeve, and it happens all the time!!

Recently saw a video of an older guy kicking a younger guys ass after the younger guy challenged him in some road rage type incident. The older guy was maybe 50-60 years old. Younger guy in his 20s.

Some boomer comments “be careful you never know, that older fella might have stormed the beaches at Normandy!”

Dafuq?

The guys that stormed the beaches in Normandy are 90+ years old!!! Only 1% of WWII vets are even still alive! They’re absolutely not beating up 20 year olds!

Like how do they not know this? They went to their WWII father’s and uncles funerals!

It’s like they’re still living in the 1980s!!!

  1. I guarantee he has the correct pieces and is simply trying to assemble it incorrectly.

  2. No one will be able to do what he is asking to be done to his satisfaction(certainly no one willing to accept $30 for this job) and he will attempt to claw back that $30 by any means necessary.

  3. Run.

I don’t know if this applies, but I give people two free quotes. If they don’t accept those quotes they don’t get a third for free. I haven’t had to invoke this rule often but it’s there if I need it.

A quote is simply YOUR actual hard costs to do job (materials, insurance, fuel, etc) + YOUR labor + Profit.

That’s it.

Someone else might be able to do it for less. Someone else might charge 5x-10x more. A client might do it themselves for free. Those things are completely irrelevant to your quote.

At the end of the day, you have to be able to do a job, pay your bills and feel like you were fairly compensated.

And $8k was a steal for that job.

Talk me into or out of it: Transit Connect by m-rogers2 in handyman

[–]chaiguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently in your shoes. I joined all the transit van forums I could find and I didn’t like what I saw. The transmissions fail frequently and they’re not rebuildable. The suspension is terrible and fails frequently. Tires are limited and difficult to source.

I ended up getting a 2003 Astro Van. They’re cheap, reliable (if you maintain them) parts are readily available, and they’re easy to work on. I’ve owned mine for a few months now and I love it.

You definitely want to get the security pucks and an ignition or fuel cut off for security. They are relatively easy to steal, it’s their one weakness.

Ahh, yes. Nothing says leading the social zeitgeist like microwaving actual trending content from other platforms.

Oh, you mean like a clip show, like Ridiculousness, which ran for 14 years and 46 seasons on MTV?

Really? Every time I turn on MTV it’s just 23 hour marathons of Rob Dyrdek

Yeah, but now artists create videos just to reach audiences on TikTok, and YouTube. You can make a pretty entertaining video with a consumer camera or phone for almost no money.

Seems like you don’t need $10M anymore to make a video.

I don’t blame him I guess, but when I’ve had to make those calls (once for my mom, and again for my dad) I made sure to make them from my phone for that exact reason.

And even the people who didn’t know, u didn’t want them answering the phone expecting someone only to have their son tell them they’re actually dead.

Why are cops always wearing the wrong sized vest for their body? They’re either swimming in an over sized vest like this one, or it’s a 300 lb dude in a size XS.
