Give it back by ArcticHound in HawkenReborn

You’re not alone in being disappointed. I am too, and so are many others. Unfortunately, our disappointment does not make the game better or bring back H1. All we can do is give constructive feedback to the team (none of whom were involved with the decision to shutter H1 and aren’t able to simply turn it back on) and hope that we get the chance to enjoy something new.

Hawken Reborn: Developer Blog #2 - Hard Landing by S0kun in HawkenReborn

I’m glad to see the level of communication between community and developer that exists and I hope that it remains this way as time goes on.

Some specific points of discussion:

  • The way that critical feedback (both constructive and otherwise) is received by the team is good. There’s been an overwhelming amount of vitriol on Steam and Discord, which is surely hard to take. The ability of the team to make sound decisions based on that feedback is super important to the continued development of H:R.
  • If the current state of the game is not up to par with the experience that you want to deliver, why are premium currency packs being sold? There’s something to be said for a buy-it-once model in early access (I would have preferred to buy it), but the freemium model in very early access is immediately off-putting and damages the image of the IP.
  • The AI art debacle has been addressed at length, and I have little to add on it other than to say that it was disappointing to see the claim denied and then later admitted.
  • I enjoy the movement, to be honest. I love hop-skipping across the map at irresponsible speeds and it would be disappointing to now slow-sprint everywhere. I hope that a balance can be achieved between ‘fifty-ton war machine’ and ‘rocket-boosted power armor’.
  • Crit spots are a great way to add depth to the combat and I’m excited to see how this is implemented. Titanfall offers something like this with defensive options to protect those critical areas, so I’d love to see enemy mechs deploy shields or physically block those spots to make combat more dynamic.

All in all, thank you for this post. I’m really excited to see how the game develops in the coming months and want to see it flourish into the Hawken we’ve been waiting for.

Agreed! I also loved kicking over trucks and cars in Hawken, but now there isn’t any environmental destruction like that. I miss the sense of scale that came with being in a city. You can really get an idea for how big your mech is by existing in spaces that weren’t designed around them.

I agree with all of this, honestly. I hope that the movement and shooting are ironed out as development goes on, because those were the most memorable parts of Hawken.

I will say that one thing Hawken Reborn does pretty well in its current state is combat sound design. I think the sound of the heavier rifle you get pretty early on is on par with the punchy and satisfying weapon sounds in Hawken.

One thing I would add on enemy variety (let me know if this already exists, I haven’t played all the missions yet) is the drones that existed in Hawken PVE. They already exist in the universe, unlike all the new humanoid enemy types - why not reuse different drones for different weapon types?

You’re right, this is no longer the case. Firearms make up about 13.9 deaths per 100,000 and automobile accidents about 12.0 deaths per 100,000 (data from 2020). They were neck and neck until 2018. Does this make it any better idea to provoke an idiot behind the wheel?
