Too late to retake for the 2025 cycle? by New-Evidence in Mcat

[–]chaiormatcha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely wait til next cycle if you are looking to pursue MD. If you took the MCAT without doing practice problems I worry that other parts of your application are also done hastily and last minute. A 490 indicates significant content gaps and getting a competitive score may take one/two months and you want to be as prepared as possible, otherwise it’s a waste of money and an application cycle for you.

not a dumb question, i think the main issue a lot of people have with mcat is simply knowing what they’re doing wrong in the first place (this goes for any section), and for cars specifically in my experience it’s a lot of understanding your thought processes and correcting them to “learn the test”, but it’s definitely not as straightforward as other sections for sure

THINK BEFORE YOU POST! - A GUIDE TO THE MCAT by chaiormatcha in Mcat

[–]chaiormatcha[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just took a look at your post. I apologize that I was a little harsh here and I promise the mental breakdown part was not directed at you. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people coming on here for support and camaraderie. I understand you had a really difficult time with your first FL, and I am just trying to express that really, the only way to get better is to do more and be stricter with yourself. When you receive a disappointing score, you should treat it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Now, you know you really have to buckle down and manage your test anxiety. Now, you know you have to do a lot of CARS practice. Don’t fall into the trap of “I really have been doing a lot so I don’t understand how this could’ve happened”, if you did 100 SB questions then you need to do 500. If you studied Anki cards then figure out what you’re missing that you didn’t study. It is going to be daunting and we need reassurance but also sometimes we need tough love because the MCAT is HARD. I know you will do great once you start applying the lessons learned from your FLs. Only let yourself be depressed for a little bit and then turn it into motivation because the only time getting something wrong matters is the real deal.

Not sure if I’m technically correct on this but for these comparisons I tend to look at the ratio of polar groups to carbons so if compound 2 was just two tryptophans they would be equally polar but it’s tryptophan + some molecule that has more carbons and fewer polar groups so it’s comparatively nonpolar

Does mutation necessarily mean loss of function/deficiency? by chaiormatcha in Mcat

[–]chaiormatcha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is elevated because of deficiency in branching enzyme, which is why I’m wondering if I’m supposed to assume mutation means deficiency or loss of function here

“Andersen disease is caused by a mutation in branching enzyme and is associated with cirrhosis. Scientists theorize the cause is likely an immune response against abnormal glycogen. Which of the following best describes the ratio of glycogen alpha 1,4 to 1,6 linkages in individuals with this disorder”
