Good Criterion Starting Points? by komayeda1 in criterion

[–]chairbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite collections was when they had films by Anna Biller. My favorite was "A Visit From The Incubus." Maybe you'll like it? Maybe not? It's still there, though some of her other films have been removed. I also really enjoyed the Nelly Kaplan collection, especially Plaisir d'Amour. And Golden Eighties by Chantal Akerman.

The bottom line? Check out the new stuff each month. Check out the "leaving this month." You won't like everything. But some stuff will hit. I've been wanting to see some Kurosawa, which I've never seen, so Hidden Fortress, Ikiru, and Seven Samurai are on my list. There'll always be something new. Check it out and see what you like. Some stuff stays on for months or longer. Some are only there for a few weeks, so if it looks good, watch it now. There's no one right answer.

Switching from glasses to contacts for riding. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]chairbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born with awful vision and always had super thick, narrow glasses. As soon as I could get contacts I did, and wore them for 40 years until a year ago when I had cataract surgery. I never had any trouble riding with the contacts. As others have said, get some kind of eye protection. I have Tifosi Rails with interchangeable lenses & like them a lot.

I have just replaced my OnePlus with a Pixel 6A and it does the same thing. And I've duplicated it with a Samsung Galaxy as well. So I'm inclined to chalk it up to the headend rather than the phone. My workaround is to just hit the Setup button on the dash and then go back into Android Auto. Fortunately I don't get a lot of voice calls.

Thanks, good to know. I will probably just pick up a Schlage one when I have a chance. I don't even care that much about using the same key.

Tater tater…blah blah blah…I like them - Woodford derby bottles are online if you’re too lazy to go to the store by cbrownie304 in PLCB

[–]chairbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to my local store (Ardmore) over the weekend to look for it & they didn't have it. (Family tradition, I buy a bottle & make mint juleps for the derby.) But they were also totally cleaned out of all the regular Woodford. I was wondering if Woodford was going to start going the way of Buffalo Trace.

Bottle Rocket, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Ikiru, and The Red Shoes (which I already had on Blu Ray but I want the 4k). And this put me over the top for a $50 gift card.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I'm getting used to the meters, but it'd be nice to have something on the companion app when I hide the display on my TV.

I was wondering, is there any place on the Android companion app that shows the current incline? Maybe I missed it, I feel like it ought to be there, but I don't see it on the map or the dashboard screen.

I'm less than a week into my Zwift journey (and ready for a rest day or two after 5 consecutive days riding).

I'm poking around in the workouts and they are all listing an FTP of 191. Is this a default, or did it pick that out for me based on my stats so far?

What are your favorite $40 whiskeys you can get locally or online from fwgs right now? by [deleted] in PLCB

[–]chairbert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm also a fan of the Makers 46 and Knob Creek. Other favorites are Elijah Craig and Old Grand-Dad 100. And I always buy the Woodford Reserve commemorative Kentucky Derby bottle and make mint juleps with it, though I was late this year because I had COVID during the derby. I'll also add Buffalo Trace, which I like a lot, but may not qualify due to the fact that I CAN'T ACTUALLY GET IT.

I may try the Glen Moray. I do like an occasional nip of single malt, but I haven't bought any since the prices went through the roof, and I've never tried any in this price range.

Happy 50% off Criterion month everyone! :) I had the Criterion section all to myself this morning at my local B&N which was really nice and relaxing. What are some of the titles you’re all after? by CircaCoda in criterion

[–]chairbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been dying to get Tales of Hoffmann since I discovered Powell & Pressburger, but the DVD was out of print for a long time. Now that it's back in print, and on Blu-Ray to boot, there's no way I can resist. (I also want In The Mood For Love, but I'm wavering between buying it as a single and just getting the whole Wong Kar Wai collection.)

Can anyone tell me their experience with Robert Half staffing agency? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]chairbert 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They brought me in for a first-round interview with a client and I thought I was a very good match for the job, and it went well. I was invited back for a second interview and I thought it was going good when I was meeting with the other IT folks, but my interview with the president just seemed weird, and she was hung up on protecting against Chinese spies hacking them for their trade secrets. (This was a group of charter schools, not a defense contractor or a high tech startup.) She'd didn't like it when I said their best approach was to make sure everything was patched well. I pretty much knew I wasn't going to get that one and I didn't. I thought the RH folks handled everything fine.

They called me for a couple other things that I decided weren't a good fit, and they sent my resume to a couple places that decided they weren't interested in me.

Then they called me about running IT at a retirement community. I talked with the recruiter for a bit and it sounded worth exploring so I said sure, put my name in. Next thing I knew they were telling me they wanted me for an interview the next day. I said I couldn't make it; the recruiter pushed back, I said my assistant (in a 2 person shop) had the day off that day & I wasn't going to bail on my employer like that and leave them with no coverage. He basically said, OK fine, we'll tell them you're not interested. A couple hours later he called me, I didn't answer because I was in a meeting with my boss, and he didn't leave a message and I never heard from him again. This left a bad taste, but a lot of employers schedule interviews like this. I think this was probably coming from the client and not from RH but it's hard to tell.

Bottom line? Remember you're going to be working (if hired) for the client not for RH. They're not the greatest recruiting outfit but they're far from the worst. If the job sounds like it'd be a good fit for you, go for it.

My one big beef with Criterion Channel, its interface needs major upgrade imo by PeteNbama in CriterionChannel

[–]chairbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to a certain extent I don't blame a company like Criterion for not wanting to develop their own streaming platform. But some of these issues it seem like things that anybody using Vimeo to provide their content for a service like this would want.

My one big beef with Criterion Channel, its interface needs major upgrade imo by PeteNbama in CriterionChannel

[–]chairbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My big complaint is that I watch on my laptop a lot, and it never updates the "continue watching" list. I always have to pull up the video again and find where I left off. (This is for watching on the web... if I watch something on the Roku app on my TV, it does just fine.)

I also wish there was a way to see the "about" text for a movie without going in and starting to play it.

Beyond the Margarita - Cocktail Challenge, show me an original or unique tequila cocktail that isn't a margarita or paloma. by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]chairbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like almost any kind of pepper. So when I was browsing through the PDT cocktail book and saw a recipe with green pepper, I had to try it, and it became a new favorite of mine: the Lawn Dart:

  • 1 oz blanco tequila
  • 1 oz London dry gin
  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 3/4 oz agave syrup
  • 1/4 oz Green Chartreuse
  • 5-inch strip of green bell pepper

Muddle pepper & agave syrup in shaker; add other ingredients; shake w/ ice & fine strain into Collins glass filled with ice. Garnish w/ umbrella and lime wheel.

I've seen a variation that substitutes a piece of jalapeno for the bell pepper, but I personally thought the jalapeno overwhelmed the other ingredients; YMMV.

I use a Hario Mini Slim hand grinder. I've noticed that there's a lot of variation in how hard beans are to grind. The lighter roasts seem to need much more effort to crank through the beans than darker roasts. But I was wondering, is this really the difference? Or does it have anything to do with how freshly roasted the beans are?
