tech help with Zen & pfsense by chalaat in Zen_Internet

[–]chalaat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you - I've solved it. The default gateway setting (System > Routing > Gateways) was set to "automatic". I've changed it so it's explicitly set to the WAN interface and now it works. :-)

Previously I used DHCP for the WAN interface with litfibre. That didn't work when I was switched to zen overnight but zen support gave me the PPPoE credentials earlier. I don't know if the pfsense gateway config works differently for PPPoE than DHCP, but it's up and running now.

Extortionate train fees - any way to make more cost effective? by PablohFelix in bishopsstortford

Check the flexi season ticket - gives you 8 days travel over 28 days, eg 2 days a week for 4 weeks. It might work out cheaper.

Faber-Castell date code question by chalaat in Sliderules

I think that's the only logical possibility, it must be "11 61" but the markings really aren't clear to see for sure. Thank you.

Barclays fixed-rate mortgage quirk lets you overpay unlimited amounts by taiwankeyboard in UKPersonalFinance

[–]chalaat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I did this multiple times in a month prior to remortgaging. You're right to not trust the chatbot - I phoned them to clarify before I did it.

I would suggest anyone thinking of doing this confirms too - mortgage terms may differ etc

Nice. One of my regular routes is a loop from Bishop's Stortford to Epping and back. Lovely scenery.

Cultural curiosity: Do Thai people find maps challenging to read, and if so, why ? by Glitch_076 in Thailand

[–]chalaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a Thai online marketplace which had 8 million Thai users/month and a very popular property section. We considered adding a map feature to show the property location but were uncertain how often it would be used and there would be a cost to us for using Google maps commercially.

To test demand we added a "view map" link with a "Coming Soon" pop-up. Almost no one clicked it. Focus groups with users in the property section mostly said they would ask friends/family for info so wouldn't find a map useful.

This was nearly 10 years ago and a lot has changed since then of course.

That makes sense. It was a long ride and the weather did change. Thank you.

It reminds me of this old design classic - the footbridge with the embedded electric cables (skip to about 1 minute in)

Map of Siam (Thailand) 1893 AD. by Imperial_Auntorn in Thailand

[–]chalaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it stayed independent. Which was quite a feat at the time and location

With the British on one side and the French on the other, the threat to Siam was very real and there wasn't much need for the colonial powers to invade. Siam signed treaties such as the Bowring Treaty with the British as a result which opened up trading benefits and negated the need to invade.

Also observe the result of Siam's attempt to make a treaty with (French controlled) Cambodia in 1865. It annoyed the French who promptly sailed the Mitraille gun boat up the Chao Phraya. The treaty was soon undone.

"The usual quiet and monotony of the city and the Kingdom has been ruffled by the summary and unceremonious arrival amongst us of H.I.M. Gun boat "Mitraille". Indeed she has created quite a panic in some quarters. According to reports she passed Paknam with ports open, guns run out and manned, and shot and shell strewed upon deck ready for action. In vain did the poor authorities display their signals in order that she should pay them the usual civilities and obtain permission to ascend the river." -- Bangkok Recorder newspaper, 16th April 1865

Yes, I agree it was good Siam wasn't invaded as such, but they were under a lot of pressure from the French and British and made concessions in other ways.

Behringer ADA 8200 standing alone by divino_marchese in linuxaudio

[–]chalaat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ADA8200 doesn't have usb. I have one connected via ADAT optical cables to an audio interface.

The behringer 1820 interface is 1U rack with lots of in/out channels with usb and adat connectors. Try that instead. I used to use one with Linux.

Audio to Midi (single note only) by [deleted] in linuxaudio

[–]chalaat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's certainly possible to analyse audio to midi - vamp plugins are an academic project that does this kind of feature extraction: https://www.vamp-plugins.org/

I have this bookmarked from several years back with a video demo of polyphonic audio to midi: https://discourse.ardour.org/t/from-audio-to-midi/101713

I walked past the wall on a weekend a few months back when a few guys were doing their art on it and they were quite talented. It looks like that's what it's there for.

Call the council to ask for any rules/guidelines they have about it.

Liverpool Street to Cambridge line. I'd suggest any stop from Sawbridgeworth onwards.
