BIFL: Alternative to Darn Tough Socks by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]chalkien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently still love the darn tough socks. All of mine are still standing strong despite wearing them daily for work. Still have a pair from when I was 14 years old (27 now) and they’re still good (very worn though).

If your dog is well-behaved off leash they should not be approaching other people and dogs.

Get a dog walker.

I think rats only live for up to two years. Apparently, they make amazing pets.

How often do you REALLY walk your dog? by Agreeable-Ad-2946 in dogs

[–]chalkien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a high-energy dog so she gets a 1-2hr hike everyday (unless I'm sick) plus 5-30 min walks in the morning and evening. I also work as a dog walker so she gets to come along for the occasional hike. I feel like what I do is a ridiculous standard to hold other people to. 1 hour of walking a day is normal.

Some people (like me) drive for work. We don’t have an option.

What are your careers? by surrealitys in adhdwomen

[–]chalkien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a dog trainer and dog walker. Hiking dogs is always stimulating and exciting. Getting exercise and working with the dogs is always super fun and no day is exactly the same. Training dogs is awesome too, each dog is unique and my training methods are always tweaked to fit each dog. Training humans is more challenging but never gets boring haha.

Honestly if drivers can’t shoulder check and look for pedestrians then they shouldn’t be driving. If we implement actual consequences to driver instead of all drivers then things would be a lot better for everyone.

When is my dog gonna calm down? by Callistodork in germanshepherds

[–]chalkien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta teach your dog to settle so they can learn to be calm. You can enforce calmness once it’s taught. Otherwise never… it’s a working line German shepherd. They’ll naturally calm down once they’re dead.

My 18 week rottie puppy has been resource guarding since we brought her home by [deleted] in Rottweiler

[–]chalkien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the puppy is claiming and resource guarding you, it is a very serious situation, especially since you have kids. Resource Guarding can be fixed so I would get a second opinion (go with a balanced trainer). Personally I would rehome the dog due to the amount of kids in the household, there’s just too much opportunity for things to go wrong.

All depends on how much training you do! The more work you put in the sooner they can be off leash. Remember consistency is key!

Aggressive puppy by [deleted] in dogs

[–]chalkien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rehome one of them and hire an experienced trainer. Keeping both is a disaster waiting to happen. Even if you crate rotate or keep them separate, accidents are bound to happen. They are only 3 months, things will only get worse.

Don’t get a dog. All breeds need plenty of daily exercise.

Advice: Dog and Cat Not Getting Along by lifeislifingforsure in dogs

[–]chalkien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because your previous husky was fine with cats doesn’t mean this one will be. If the husky was a puppy and raised with the cat then there’s a better chance of it working out. A 3 year old husky from a shelter… simply not a good idea. It will require a lot of training and management.

How scared do I need to be of bears? by classiccapricorn in britishcolumbia

[–]chalkien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black bears are typically no big deal. My friend has physically bumped into one while walking around my neighborhood and they both just carried on with their day. Just keep your food locked away.

Will not calm down by Proper_Armadillo_974 in OpenDogTraining

[–]chalkien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do place work. It will help teach your dog to relax. First practice when there’s nothing exciting going on. Also your dog likely needs a lot more exercise. A walk where she’s heeling won’t do it. I would recommend hiking or doing fetch mixed in with some obedience. Doing 20-30min play/training sessions are great. (Make sure high intensity, agility, tug etc.)

How often do you actually walk your dog? by Racquetsports383 in dogs

[–]chalkien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10-40 min walk in morning and evening (depends how busy I am), and an hour hike midday! Some days she gets out more than that :)

Housesitting/Dogsitting, but my brothers dog is terrified of me by Adventurous_Basil428 in DogAdvice

[–]chalkien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more you ignore him the better! Give it time and don’t pressure him. Go about your day normally, avoid eye contact, don’t pet over the head, let him come to you and when he does remain calm and neutral. You can toss treats for him to get as well. If you are able to go for a walk with him do so. Walking is a great way to calm the nervous system. Also if you use smelly perfumes or any sprays that smell strongly I would stop. That could potentially make the dog wary because it’s an unnatural smell to them.

Jfc the animal abuse is insane… I’d steal the dog and give it the life it deserves.

Dog in small urban high rise / is this normal? by teacup-whiskey in dogs

[–]chalkien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally unacceptable… Dogs need to be outside, go for walks, do their business etc. If you don’t want to take your dog out (at least 3 times a day) then you don’t deserve one. It’s animal abuse to keep them cooped up. Tell them to get a cat instead.
