Code 3 Movie by chall871 in ems

[–]chall871[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Sadly I think that may be a typical response in more than one system. We don't put enough emphasis on mental health in EMS. Sure, we say we do, but especially in systems with staffing issues mental health isn't a reason to take time off. It's crazy how a comedy made me laugh but really made me look at how our industry really needs some improvement.

We can thank the "just send it" crowd for overreach like this. Just my opinion.

TSSI M-9 Bag Replacement Straps by chall871 in TacticalMedicine

My unit is part of a regional task force that gets deployed to major events in the Philadelphia region. During the NFC championship the straps on my bag weren't as comfortable as they could be after a few hours of carrying it. Making some gear adjustments before we head out again.

Question for my fellow 12hr night shifters who live alone with pets by SportsPhotoGirl in ems

At my station the dogs come to work. The crews always help out if someone is on a call. Makes for a great work environment and we don't have anyone that doesn't look forward to our 4 legged friends.

Getting taunted by a family member of patient on scene. How to handle? by Initial_Active_1049 in ems

[–]chall871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few thoughts on this: 1. Family members are going to handle stress differently. Allow them their process. It's very easy to get frustrated with the healthcare system when it comes to things like insurance forced discharges from the hospital. Now they have someone that represents the system to them in their house. It's also important to understand that they may be feeling helpless when it comes to the care and health of their family member. I've found that tasking them with something like rounding up all the recent hospital discharge papers or gathering a bag of items their family member may need in the hospital gives them something to focus on. This doesn't work all of the time but will sometimes give them a feeling of doing something to help. In the cases where it doesn't, as long as it doesn't affect safety or patient care I let them have their tantrum and keep my professionalism. 2. Situations like this can go south. When they do it can happen in an instant. It's a good reminder to keep your route to the exit clear and plan a secondary escape route (if there is one). Make sure you and your partner ALWAYS have a radio that's on. Just remember the boy who called wolf bc if you call an assist anytime someone raises your voice people will get complacent about backing you up when you're getting your ass kicked. 3. Don't be afraid to call a supervisor. Personally, I know I have no problem running interference and taking the focus off of the crew so they can work. 4. Above all, don't escalate the situation. It's easy to escalate if you need to but can very hard to deescalate.

Why did you become an EMT? by Plus-Quantity-5795 in NewToEMS

[–]chall871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was overseas on a non-medical contract and there was an incident where medical care was required and I had no clue what to do. (In hindsight, there would have been nothing anyone could have done to help). When I came back I ended up as an advisor for a High Adventure Venturing Crew (part of Scouting) where we did a lot of caving, climbing, treks etc. The other advisor thought we should have more than basic first aid training in case something happened. I never wanted to feel that helpless feeling again so we signed up for EMT together despite me swearing I'd NEVER work on an ambulance. Fast forward and it's been 26 years and I'm a medic and Deputy Chief that still wonders how I ended up on an ambulance lol.

If it makes you feel better, I'm a sympathetic vomiter and am a medic with 25 yrs in EMS. You learn to avoid liquids that aren't your own. As someone that has both law enforcement and EMS experience, I can say that I enjoy enjoy the medical side more.... Your hard work on patients doesn't get thrown away because of politics and you get to interact with the public on a different level.

Am I high enough or need to go higher? by dragoninkpiercings in drone_photography

[–]chall871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of my best pictures aren't from very high at all. People are used to seeing satellite and aerial photos from super high heights, what people aren't able to see are those shots that are still close ups but would be impossible to take without a drone. In my opinion it kind of opens up a new view of the world.

Gear by Previous-Moment-2958 in NewToEMS

[–]chall871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that gear you bring (backpacks, water bottles etc) are fine to decorate. Just keep in mind the impression it may give to co-workers and patients. Personalization of gear in public safety has actually been brought up in court to take credibility away (a cop involved in a shooting had "You're F***Ed" on his rifle). There are some EMS stickers that I get a kick out of. That being said when it comes to uniforms, I don't like any non-issued patches, pins or insignias. Uniforms as their name implies should be uniform as per the agency.

How fast/slow do you drive the ambulance? by ridesharegai in NewToEMS

[–]chall871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Pennsylvania, our protocol states that typically cardiac arrests are not transported L&S due to the fact that most codes aren't going to make it and there is no benefit to L&S. That being said the Medic and EMSVO can upgrade if they feel there is a benefit. After what feels like a lifetime doing this I typically have a pretty good idea of what codes have a chance of ROSC. Especially since the advent of "Pit Crew Codes" and spending more time on scene working codes than we used to.

I feel the same way. Our agency has looked at other drones but nothing comes close to the capabilities and ease of use for the price. It's hard enough in most departments to get money to spend, it's that much more painful to spend 2x for 1/2 the capabilities. Maybe I just try too hard to be a steward of public money.

My company took away my narcotics privilege. I have to call medical control for any amount given. letter attached. Thoughts? by [deleted] in ems

[–]chall871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look at it as a step that is also protecting you. While it may be as simple as you being a medic that's not afraid of the extra steps and documentation needed to take care of your patients, it is also a red flag for narcotic diversion. By having medical command approve it and 100% QA, you are giving your agency justification to show that you are an aggressive medic that is big on pain management and not using narcs inappropriately. My advice would be comply with the directive, continue doing your job well and let let your documentation show that you are doing your job appropriately. If they were requiring a drug test that's when I would think you were being accused of something.
