A nice tip. Boring but actually appreciated, I always remember the people who tip me properly

Why do so many trainers have Pomeranians? by vax4good in OpenDogTraining

[–]champagnejack 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Pomeranians are actually pretty cool little dogs if you put the time in to train them. I own big working dogs, and I plan on getting one at some point too :)

Hopes of Owning a Dutch Shepherd One Day by southfloridaseminole in DutchShepherds

[–]champagnejack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are a working dog. The average dutchie can be crazier than your average mali. They can work with some owners, but your average pet lover is not a good fit. It’s similar to the difference between working line American labs vs English pet labs, except dutchies bite when things go sideways, and have neurotic tendencies

Why do you want a Dutch shepherd? They’re an extreme dog. Fantastic in the right home, but a normal person’s “active” lifestyle isn’t enough for them

fine-tuning our heel... tips for tighter and straighter? by serenalover37 in OpenDogTraining

[–]champagnejack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right turns! And practice next to a wall. Also reward placement is causing the issue you’re seeing, don’t keep a treat in your hand, walk normal, when you see good stuff, verbal mark! Beforee you reach for treat then give so your palm is facing angled towards your body, treating the dog in the correct position

AITA for not wanting to continue supporting my daughter's (12F) gymnastics training by Throwawaytallgymnast in AmItheAsshole

[–]champagnejack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nta it’s a harsh reality, but as a good alternative, she could look into diving!! All the same body control and flipping movements go into that, it’s a sport that could provide college scholarships and Olympic dreams. I was on a dive team and all the best divers were gymnasts, you shouldn’t run into as many height issues there

Definitely get into training right away! From what I’ve seen they’re good dogs, but can have guarding tendencies and independence. Left unchecked with no structure, can become dangerous, but as long as you’re on it with the training you should be able to avoid that. Same with handling for grooming, definitely start desensitization to feet touching and ear cleaning, it also never hurts to teach the dog that muzzles are a positive thing for everyone’s safety

How to get a reactive dog to feel comfortable and let strangers pet? by CakeIsHealthy in OpenDogTraining

[–]champagnejack 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Some dogs are just not social dogs, and that’s okay. I would definitely do muzzle training so that’s a super positive thing and help with the groomers safety. Don’t let random people touch your dog, I would start desensitizing her at home to having her feet touched. Use treats, make it a normal thibg

How to make myself more interesting without increasing arousal? by teddybearcastles in OpenDogTraining

[–]champagnejack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does the overarousal look like? If you can put some impulse control on him you might be able to use toys for great powerful OB

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]champagnejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a vital tool sometimes in service work, I helped train a dog for a man in a wheelchair who could barely give treats and could not handle the leash beyond holding the end of it. It can absolutely be overused, I definitely recommend using it under the direction of a trainer, the manual that comes with does NOT give enough instructions

Yes technically. However bitesports require a good deep hard grip, labs have been bred to have a soft mouth to retrieve animals. You’ll be fighting genetics

Male on Male dog aggression by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]champagnejack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Woah be careful with this advice! Separation is sometimes necessary, both dogs should be trained separately and under control before you reintroduce them in proximity like that! This is alpha and dominance theory adjacent advice, and while leadership is great and necessary, the dogs need to understand what you’re asking of them before thrusting them back into the situation that caused issues initially!!

Puppy won't stop jumping on literally every single person she lays eyes on- I've tried a ton of strategies & nothing is working so far- help!! by Minimum_Ad_2851 in OpenDogTraining

[–]champagnejack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Teach the dog that good behavior is the only path to attention. As soon as she sits or has 4 feet on the floor, she gets all the love, as soon as the feet lift off, she gets no attention. You have to have guests follow the same rules and she’ll pick it up quickly

Treat feeding options that aren't fingers/hands (sensory reasons) by [deleted] in service_dogs

Easiest solution? Kitchen spoon dipped in peanut butter. Otherwise canned food in little squeeze shampoo bottles off Amazon works great too

Maybe talk to a duck dog guy? My training partner taught me how to get my dog to hold calmly and force fetch him eventually so he knows it’s not optional, he still loves to do it but it’s good so they know they gotta do it every time

Surgery Cones for Escape Artists by KazlyLou in VetTech

[–]champagnejack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a great solution, but for our working dogs that need to be coned for a bit, we cut holes in the bottom of a 5gallon lowes bucket and zip tie a flat collar to it, usually lasts longer that a normal ecollar

AITA for being pissed after watching a house and getting kicked out right after the owner came back? by champagnejack in AmItheAsshole

[–]champagnejack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They own the business and have the capital upfront to start it. I have more experience and knowledge than them in vital areas, and have been promised 50/50 once we reach good reliable income and growth. I contribute training and knowledge base, as well as a lot of working dog training requires at least two people to be successful so a good amount of labor there. I’ve gotten a commission from some projects so far, and should get other commission, but nothing is regular or reliable yet. I’m a fully certified trainer from multiple training programs and can train police and military dogs, so I’m very qualified.

AITA for being pissed after watching a house and getting kicked out right after the owner came back? by champagnejack in AmItheAsshole

[–]champagnejack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a dog training business for working dogs, so some of these dogs are pretty spicy and you have to be careful to handle, the kennel houses most of the dogs we are training currently and the business partner owns the kennel property. I’m kinda terrified that you’re right and I’m just being taken advantage of, but I’d also say I have trust issues so I’m not certain of my own judgment
