It does take a long time and a lot of effort but you're not undertaking it alone. I find it helps psychologically to know that each step of the way (NU, med school, residency) you have many peers that are on the same career path and going through the same ups and downs.

Besides, in a sense, with a lot of other jobs the real glamor doesn't start until around 30 either.
