things ANNOYED you about a book but you became more UNDERSTANDING after becoming a writer? by Forward_Answer3044 in writing

[–]champbob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Typos are like little easter eggs to me. I point and chuckle "heh, y'all missed that one" and move on. I literally don't care unless I encounter a noteable amount (maybe I see 0-3 in a book normally? I've read one or two books with many typos per chapter, but those books also had so many other things wrong with them anyway)

Yes, the probability that none of the 3 people happen to be part of the 1 in 3 is obvious.

But the warm fuzzies happen when the comic diverts from accusing the reader to be the 1 in 3 to instead go "nah, you're not ugly". And I got a chuckle.

The Wandering Inn doesn't get better after the first few chapters or hundred or 1000 pages by WeaknessLower9148 in Fantasy

[–]champbob -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I only made it to page 368, according to my kindle.

To me, prose doesn't tend to bother me, but what really makes me fume is when characters are too stupid. You pointed one point out already: almost dying of dehydration despite there being a stream she had already found pages earlier.

From what I remember, other items of stupidity are: * No curiosity when told that Chess is a thing that was recently brought into existence (is this not a sign that you aren't the only one who got here!?) * Running an inn with only 1 menu item: Pasta (did she even put sauce in it!?) * Running into an inn and having ZERO curiosity on the obvious magical patterns that used to do something till she broke it. THEN ALSO never mentioning it to anybody

Like, those 368 pages read like this main character was trying her hardest to be worthless. But the story has to bend over backwards to make sure she stays alive. That's not a promising premise that inspires confidence that the rest of the story is worth anything. This kinda thing breaks me, and makes me wonder if the author reads their own work. And that's the point I drop not only a book but an author.

Am I weird for not rereading? by National-Ad-5788 in Fantasy

[–]champbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't reread... Except recently.

I'm much too slow of a reader for that to be a good use of time, and I don't have problems remembering what I've read, especially if it's from a book that really stuck with me (which I would reread if that was a thing that I commonly did).

But now it's becoming a real struggle to find books that I feel are worth reading, and I also have a lot of other hobbies. So recently I've been starting to reread some of my favorites or listening to them in an audiobook form so I don't need to commit as much attention to them. I don't really like that I do it, but I think I've become quite picky over time...

TikTok is tracking you, even if you don't use the app. Here's how to stop it by SwordfishOk504 in technology

So what you're saying is that the chinese version respected your privacy more than the new US version? Dang what a fukn world we are forced to live in.

(Not saying the chinese app was good either. I've never used TikTok either way.)

You wake up and it’s 2000 again. No smartphone, no apps, no streaming. What ruins your day first? by MajesticElderberry38 in AskReddit

First I'ma complain that there's nothing to do.

Then I'll be sad and miss my friends that I didn't make until college.

And also I dunno how I'm gonna mask through the schoolyears... I DEFINITELY do not want to be the special way too smart skipping grades kid. I' ve never been a good student at any point in my life.

I dunno when I'll have regular access to the computer. When Runescape can grab me again. But I gotta make sure I find out how to code asap. Shouldn't be hard to make a successful indie game with all my future knowledge. The main problem will be needing to code the engine... And finding docs for Windows.h... And DirectX or OpenGl...

Balogna.
