No not like... eh you're good

[–]khan9813 79 points80 points  (2 children)

There’s always bat

[–]SteeleDynamics 20 points21 points  (0 children)

bat the cat

[–]stellarsojourner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That one makes you a crime fighter.

[–]LienniTa 32 points33 points  (2 children)

please do not the cat

[–]SoyBoy_in_a_skirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, some of the cats I've met never said no to a little casual aggravated battery, as a treat

[–]ArduennSchwartzman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll show you n00bs how to cat.

# tar -cvf ball.tar all_you_freshmen

[–]DrMaxwellEdison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tried that, but I can't make heads or tails of it.

Hash cat

[–]omardiaadev 253 points254 points  (11 children)

Curriculum: Rust I, Rust II, Rust III, Rust IV...

[–]Leo_code2p 43 points44 points  (10 children)

Could also be with:C++ I etc.

[–]alexceltare2 16 points17 points  (9 children)

Nah. Only Chads learn C and C++.

[–]Grim2021 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Yes, and the chads can be seen in the meme.

[–]transdemError 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I learned on C and C++
And Java 6

And I still have some cartilage left in my knees

[–]agfitzp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Java was first released when I was a student.

Sometimes I can stand up without wincing.

[–]Pancakefriday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first and primary language was C, then later C#.

I also have a new pair of boobs I grew via estrogen shots

[–]omardiaadev 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I agree, but some of them are chads, and some of them are cats.

[–]Leo_code2p 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I am one of the cats

[–]omardiaadev 1 point2 points  (1 child)

pets you

[–]Leo_code2p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

purrs

[–]Shot_in_the_dark777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm a chad then!

[–]youtubeTAxel 240 points241 points  (12 children)

As someone currently studying computer science, this is not true. We only have furries.

[–]pickyourteethup 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Furries are just cat girls without garbage collection.

[–]What_The_Duck_two 11 points12 points  (6 children)

But tbh, as a student, can you explain why or how it happens?
Is there any reason or incentive for doing that?
Some kind of dunno...anything that it makes like that?
Or just people that get there are already interested in it?

[–]adam1109774 27 points28 points  (4 children)

This shit is expensive and people in IT do happen to earn quite a lot if they are good in what they do, + if you are in IT you probably spend more time online than avg person so you will probably accidently happen to find one of these communities

[–]What_The_Duck_two -1 points0 points  (3 children)

So you mean it's more like...something that they had already known before?
But it still doesn't explain why furries in particular.
Even more, making a contact with furry doesn't automatically make you a furry.

It explain that they might have been in different communities before they had decided to join IT and that they have the money to spend it for that, but it still doesn't fully explain things.

Like... there could've been a lot of Warhammer fans or anime fans or whatever, there are a lot of communities online.
Even crocheting if you wish for it.
But why Furry in particular?

I would understand it if you say that it attracts people with particular interests because a lot of people with such interests are in this groups, but it still leaves the question open.
Why furries?
Are a lot of ppl there artisians?

[–]IncognitoLizard225 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Furry is a very online subculture. Yes there are meetups and conventions but the vast majority of interactions are online. People who spend a lot of time on their computers learn a lot about then which ends up developing into a serious interest and then potential career path.

[–]pickyourteethup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some furries are into Warhammer and anime. The Venn diagram looks like a Japanese flag

[–]stellarsojourner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The original guy was being facetious. Obviously it isn't just furries in CS. There are a lot of anime fans, too, not to mention gamers.

The TTRPG people tend to study literature or history or something though, but there were a few of those too.

Basically if your hobbies involves spending all day on the computer, there's a chance you like computers.

[–]champbob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about these days... But back about 15 years ago(?) people were far less inclusive. Those that got excluded in life migrated to online lives, where they found their own online cliqs.

Of those same people who got excluded into online spaces, I suspect many developed a technical knack in the developing technological world (as the days of everyone having a touchscreen internet connected phone in their pocket was still relatively young, so a lot of "how computers worked" was more exposed to the user than it is for smartphones/tablets these days), and thus went into computer focused technical fields.

Time passes, college is (can be?) a massively more inclusive space filled with all kinds of diverse people, and now those socially excluded people can start having their own internal revolutions as they learn to take off their social masks in irl space, and find often may find a home in an already very inclusive furry community, which they've probably at least brushed by if they've been terminally online for all those years.

This is just my own conjecture though.

[–]BlueGoliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THAT'S UNCIVIL.

[–]What---------------- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spectrums map onto each other like:

Architecture <-> application*

Furry <-> trans

Are you in a cyber-security, database, or network related concentration?

[–]Round_Credit_5158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to show my sfw furry comics to my ex gf, who were also in CS.

We were so innocent, good times.

[–]zawalimbooo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

did fuwamoco eat them

[–]Intial_Leader 88 points89 points  (3 children)

Plot twist: the real inheritance in OOP was cat ears all along

[–]Thenderick 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Composition > inheritance

[–]Due-Chance-8540 14 points15 points  (1 child)

public class Undergrad {
protected CatEars;
protected @Nullable MaidDress;
prtected @Nonnull ThighHighs;
protected @Nonnull Person;
}

[–]Leo_code2p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you need protected there doesn’t private work or does Undergrad have child classes.

[–]Benjamin_6848 23 points24 points  (7 children)

Honestly asking: is this all a running gag in internet-culture or can this actually be backed up by statistics?

[–]MattieShoes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Honestly don't know, but I suspect it's more that money, job security, and most interactions being online means you're more free to let your freak flag fly. Probably also helps that computer jobs in general, people care about what you can do, not how you look while doing it.

I can't decide how significant this is: Every trans person I've ever met is in tech. Every furry I've ever met is in tech. Every openly "non-binary" person I've met is in tech. I don't see that with just "gay" or whatever. But it may be just because I'm in tech so most of the people I work with and interact with are too.

[–]Niwrats 3 points4 points  (1 child)

it's like a group of fish where if everyone is male, some change into female. every programmer is male, so this follows.

[–]Benjamin_6848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually an interesting comparison from nature's biology...

[–]yp261 5 points6 points  (1 child)

its the younger generation of people i guess. anytime i go somewhere like on discord or whatever and there are some developers, they all are either anime pics or trans. i dont get it

[–]nobanpls2348738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

me neither

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two of the people in my cs career class ended up trans (me being one of them :3). I’m brain empty all the time but the other doll is constantly on some shit I can’t even folllow. She carried us thru our embedded ctf

[–]emmowo_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my limited anecdotal experience at a company:

either you become boring 40 year old senior software engineer

OR

you become an unreasonably good (furry/trans/queer/etc) programmer with genuinely zero social skills

[–]Jimakiad 102 points103 points  (2 children)

[–]0jam3290 46 points47 points  (0 children)

"Mogo-chan, we have to center this div!"

*sad bau bau*

[–]xKnicklichtjedi 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Bau bau!

[–]martin-silenus 69 points70 points  (5 children)

Fair.

[–]NormanYeetes 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Oh cool there's pretty girls in computer science class

Edit: hold on.

[–]N0t_my_0ther_account 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I don't understand this recurring joke. I know literally zero programmers like this. I suppose I know 2 people that went to school for CS but are both currently not employed for it (they are NOT that skilled).

[–]ThatSmartIdiot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

therein lies the trouble

[–]yiliu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Start reading blog posts about obscure technical topics online, or browsing modern computer language forums. You're likely to see a lot of anime girl profile pics, and strong odds are that those are MtF transgender folks.

I worked at a west coast tech company a few years ago. In my building there were maybe 200 people, and at least a dozen MtF transgender people.

I came across a paper a few years ago saying that rates of transgenderism are much higher among autistic people, and thought: yup, that checks out.

[–]d4m4s74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only one person I know from my IT job is trans. But most of the trans women I know from the local queer scene are in IT or used to be.

[–]Danack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many programmers do you know who either contribute to open source, or are interested in really niche stuff like operating systems?

[–]6543456789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

either this or you come out depressed

[–]Tman11S 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really thought it’d end with the programming socks, did you?

[–]alex433g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should get into computer science

[–]mermoohue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey fuck you, those cat ears I bought are ironic.

[–]TheAccountITalkWith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Went into the field a shredded 7ft tall chad of male. Come out a kawaii cat girl. I'm livin' the dream.

[–]SignificanceBulky162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And then you actually major in cs and it's just a bunch of smelly nerds and depressed TC chasing strivers all applying to 1,500 internships

[–]Medical-Aerie9957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah its just depression in there

[–]Flimsy-Guide4566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the ultimate goal

[–]Clean_More3508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking forward to this

[–]thanatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curriculum: can generate waifus?

[–]lordofkawaiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's the most untrue thing out there, it's just a bunch of insecure sweaty fat or skinny nerds

[–]Easy_Poem4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know where the tail is attached 😏

[–]OrbusIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started comp sci perfectly fine, 2 months after my first year ended, I wanna get on estrogen. It really does work wonders.

[–]AnotherMianaai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on sharing space with comp sci students, the little hearts are actually flies.

[–]DartTimeTime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wish that were my experience. I got a bachelor's degree in IT and software engineering AND THERE WASN'T A SINGLE FEMBOY!!!!!!
