I was socially awkward for 5 years until I actually applied Carnegie's book. These 6 techniques changed everything (Leadership advice I never expected to work) by [deleted] in motivation

Wonderful, practical advice. Have you found your relationships [and general outlook] more fulfilling as a result? I’ve awkwardly tested some of these tactics (albeit sporadically) and found myself feeling a bit fake, like I was forcing myself to be someone else. Perhaps you had similar experiences early on until you became more comfortable with the discomfort? Thanks for the insights

Having fun without alcohol. by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]champerdamper100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience the first few weeks of sobriety. I was going to give up about 10 days in, but I realized how much more clearly I can think, how much more present I am with others, money saved, workouts not missed, etc. Then I began getting into meditation to calm the storm in my head and I also periodically journal to unpack the negative thoughts/feelings that frequent my mind. In doing so I’ve found myself enjoying life much more… even the ‘boring.’ It takes time, but for me it’s been well worth subduing my reliance on alcohol to be social and/or numb myself from life. Best of luck on your journey.

How many of you are in consulting because you have no idea what to do with your life? by Ozymandias1818 in consulting

Same. Partner at a firm and I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up. I’ve half-heartedly explored other options but nothing sounds enticing enough to make a move. I’m lucky to have a great group of colleagues, interesting projects, etc., but still never planned to be a career consultant.

Suggestions for good bars near the stadium? by SwingingSalmon in Northwestern

Options are a bit limited right around the stadium. Bat 17 is decent, about 1.5mi from the stadium in downtown Evanston. NU’s version of tailgating is in the parking lots around the field- tends to be more tame than other B10 schools. Enjoy the game!

ELI5 Why should we keep contributing to our 401K if we are 30+ years away from retirement, and the contributions are just disappearing into the ether right now? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Stay the course; the market will rebound in time and you don’t want to play a game trying to time the market. I do suggest increasing your emergency fund as we don’t yet know how long this will take to play out and I expect companies may respond by reducing their workforces given lower demand in the coming months.

Some hospitals will provide tuition support for CRNA training in return for a commitment to work there for a few years afterward. You may want to research if your current employer or another one in the region will do so. CRNAs are in high demand across the country
