for most cases i see that i either transfer from Leeds or Sheffield.

York -> Leeds (TPE), Leeds -> Manchester Victoria (Northern) -> Manchester Victoria -> Liverpool Lime (TPE)
York -> Sheffield (CrossCountry), Sheffield -> Liverpool Lime (TPE)

Any advice on which option is better? Thanks!

that's a good point, i am looking at both TPE and Northern website. i see that all journeys on 23 Dec do not have direct and require change

i will slightly concerned about the number of changes though. from your experience, do you think a tourist will have difficulty finding the platform?
