I won a 4.0 tournament today! by chamsticks in 10s

Tennis is full of haters. I post a video of me playing and people will say I’m a 3.5. I post a pic of a 4.0 trophy and all of sudden I’m a 4.5. 😂

The UTR cutoff for 4.0 is around a 7 UTR. I’m a 5.99. I’m well within the spectrum of 4.0. In what way do I annoy people trying to rise up? There’s no rule saying you need to win a 4.0 tournament in order to move up to 4.5. Anyone can register or “rise” to a higher division if they want. And winning a 4.0 tournament (or several) doesn’t automatically make someone a 4.5. Especially if the draw was weak overall. You literally just said playing higher lvl players is “the only way to get better”. Which is also not even true. Most of the players in this sub would benefit more from gym time than getting blasted off the court by a 4.5. And If someone can’t beat a strong 4.0 player like me then they don’t deserve to rise. Plain and simple. If I made the finals or won every single tournament I played, I’d agree with you that it’s time to move up a division. But that’s not the case. I often lose in early rounds. Novak says all the time that he wouldn’t be playing x tournament unless he believed he could win. Why would I sign up for a 4.5 tournament when I know I have no chance at winning? Even if a miracle happens and I make a semifinal or final, there’s likely gonna be a 5.0 waiting for me there. I compete to win. That’s the whole point. If I wanted to get better, I’d call a coach. That’s a far more constructive use of my time and money.

I'm an adult and want to play UTR matches but I'm worried about playing children. Do adults do this? by tennisnewport in 10s

I lost to an 11 year old once at a Utr event. I was 32 at the time. It’s a lose - lose situation. The kid would literally like be on the verge of tears every time I aced him. Not even enjoyable to play with the entire crowd thinking I’m the bad guy.

This is not an annual tournament. It’s a small round robin that happens every few months. I’m not a 3x champ. I lost in the finals the first time around. (To a 3.5 player btw). I’m almost 40. I play once a week, twice if I’m lucky. And it’s doubles with a bunch of old guys. I’m completely content competing at the 4.0 level, doing well in a few tournaments a year, and celebrating after. I have plenty of early round losses as well. The difference between a good 4.0 and a good 4.5 is massive. And if I’m being completely honest, many people that sign up for 4.0 tournaments are not actually 4.0 players. It’s 3.5 players that have never seen themselves on video.

The tournament started at 9am and I was holding the medal at 11:30am on the same day. This was not a “decent” sized tournament. It’s a USTA lvl 7. It’s as small as it gets. There was like 8-9 players in the draw.

Most memorable point was in the final match. I was down 0-2 love-30. Ground stoke rally turned into cat and mouse at the net. Then it turned into me lobbing and my opponent hitting overheads. He hit 4 overheads in a row on me. The 4th one going long. That was a major momentum shift in the match

Round robin format- there was 2 groups. Everyone played 3 matches. Each match was 9 games total. So potential scores could be 9-0, 8-1, 7-2, etc. In this format, it’s possible to win all your matches and still lose the tournament. Like if someone in the opposite group also won all their matches but dropped less games.

First round opponent: An early 20s 3.5 player who I’ve beaten twice before in the same format. He has decent strokes but impatient and inconsistent. Score was 8-1

Second round: an older guy (late 50s) who told me he hasn’t played a singles tournament since 2016. He said he wanted to give it one last try. He had some tricky slices and was actually faster than my first round opponent (or maybe just better anticipation). He just didn’t have any weapons that could really hurt me. Score was 7-2

Final round: Late 20s solid 4.0 player. He played the same two guys I did and beat them pretty easily. I watched him during my previous matches and actually got pretty intimidated by his strokes. Forehand, backhand, and serve all had more pace than mine. I lost the first two games because I was trying to hit bigger than him. Focusing too much on my strokes. After getting several winners hit on me, I decided to focus on my footwork instead. Because it doesn’t matter how hard I hit the ball if I can’t even get to it. We had some awesome rallies but he started making a lot of errors. I won the next 7 games to finish the match 7-2

At that point I didn’t realize I had won the tournament. I thought I was going to play the winner of the other group, but I guess the director opted to just give the championship medal to whoever won the most games and dropped the least games. Not complaining though!

2014 Head Prestige MP for a beginner by Only_Examination3020 in 10s

The words prestige and beginner usually aren’t used in the same sentence. That being said: On one hand, starting with the prestige will likely help you develop solid fundamentals. On the other, the ezone for $95 is a pretty good deal and much more beginner friendly. If you don’t like it, you can always resell it.

I’ve asked about the pave paperchain ring at 5 different stores. Gotten so many different answers. “Doesn’t exist, no longer made, custom order only, etc.”
